Title: Nairn's arrival in NZ
Post by: iang on Saturday 26 April 08 07:11 BST (UK)
Can someone help me, I am trying to find when my forbears arrived in NZ, I do not know what ship they trevelled on or in what year they travelled.
James Nairn born 1828 in UK md Christina Nairn his cousin not sure when came to NZ and settled in and around the Mt Stewart, Sanson area. They had a son John born 1852 in UK and James died 1908 so it would be somewhere between those dates.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

1893 electoral roll
Surname   NAIRN
Given Name   James
Number   1844
Electorate   Otaki
Voting Qualification   Freehold
Residential Address   Carnarvon
Occupation   Farmer
Property Detail   Part secs. 103, 270, Mount Stewart

Surname   NAIRN
Given Name   John Liddell
Number   1845
Electorate   Otaki
Voting Qualification   Freehold
Residential Address   Carnarvon
Occupation   Farmer
Property Detail   Part secs. 102, 270, Mount Stewart

and they are both there in 1881 electoral roll

So its before 1881 that they arrived

If you search James Nairn at Papers past there are quite a few possible entries
including obits stating "very old settler"

There are also NAIRN's in the Petone settlers dbase, my pc is running too slow to search

Althea, thanks for the info. I actually have a birth certificate for 1862 so they would have been before that also.

Hi Ian

If James died in NZ, his death cert should say how long he had been in NZ.

Hi Folks,
I have just received death certificates for James Nairn and Christina Nairn and one indicates they arrived NZ 1853 the other indicates 1858. I have attempted to see if I could find a shipping list showing when and how they arrived NZ without success.
The settled around the Mt Stewart area, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks Ian

Hi Ian,

Have you tried this link for Wellington arrivals ... think it is the one Althea referred to above ... there is a James Nairn arriving 1856 and other Nairns also.

Hi Kea,
Have looked at this site and do not think it is my James as he came out with his wife and son. There does not appear to be a family of three in 1853-8.
Thanks Ian

Hi Ian

I have just received death certificates for James Nairn and Christina Nairn and one indicates they arrived NZ 1853 the other indicates 1858.

According to the dates, would he have arrived first?
This would not be that unusual for the husband to come out and "get established" before the rest of the family.

Bren, I guess its possible. It would mean leaving behind a wife and a two year son. Whether they would wait 5 years between times I am not sure.
I know they had 4 sons and 2 daughters, if I could track that info down I could possibly get some idea of timing.

....so which certificate gave a year of 1853, and which gave 1858???

Who was the informant on the death cert of the first person to die?
Spouse, family member or the undertaker?

Christina Nairn had 1853 and the informant was son in law.
James Nairn had 1858and the informant was Coroner no family member, many items on this certificate are suspect.

Hi

I really do hate to throw the "cat among the pigeons"   ;D    .... but would love to have a dollar for every time I've come across a "3 "  being mis-transcribed as an "8" ... and vice-versa.      [And have printouts and transcripts for my "own lot" which record some wildly inaccurate "dates of arrival"] !

Still   .... working hard over on your other thread - "Indian Queen Arrivals", to see if we can sort this mystery.     :D

Lu,
This entry was when I had nothing other than death certs which also had many other questionable entries. The 1856 is based on info I received that indicated a Robert Nairn was born 11NOV1856 at sea 'Indian Queen' enroute to NZ. Hence my new attempt. Ian
