I have just discovered that an old neighbour of a friend of mine died last October in Maryland-her name was Phyllis L McGuire nee Neil. Her husband Matthew McGuire ex US Navy died in 2005 and is buried at Arlington Cemetery.
Can anyone suggest where she might be buried or how I can find out where her kids are now? She isn't buried with hubby and the local Gazette doesn't have an obit for her.In 2005 they seem to have been living in Montgomery Village and Phyll died with a Gaithersburg area code in the SSN death index.
She had two daughters and a son who was b 1950 and who will hopefully still be alive,so I won't mention any names here
I would be very grateful for some help here-if someone could just point me in the right direction ;D
Thanks

Do you have an obituary for her husband? It might give a location for their children and, if appropriate, married surnames for the daughters.
Otherwise, you could try looking online for cemeteries or funeral homes in the area and see if they have any information about Phyllis.
-
HI Shelley
No obits for either sadly.
I've emailed 4 cemeteries that I could find online, but none of them have her!
Dollylee kindly sent me the White Pages entries for the area, but none are in the son's name.
I'm getting nowhere fast with this problem ::)
Thanks anyway

I know this is rather an old thread, but I am revisting it to try and get some more info.
A few questions........can I get either Matthew (2005) or Phyllis's(2007) death cert .
Is there a good website that may have either of their obit's?
I've tried googling Maryland newspapers but had no luck so far.
Their 3 kids (2 girls and a boy) were all born in the 40's and 50's,is there a Maryland marriage index that I can search?
Many thanks

Hi Carol,
Have you tried the RAOGK volunteer for Montgomery - 1 st on the list of the link below does " Public Records library lookups and copying. Obituaries "
http://www.raogk.org/maryland.htm
There is a family that travels Guam to San Fran on the Fred Ainsworth - 17 August 1951 going to 8 Mawal Drive. Cedar Grove. NJ -
Is that your family ?
Sandra
-
Hi Sandra,
Yes that is the family I'm interested in,and no I haven't tried the RAOGK.
I've had great success with them with my own family in Canada, not sure why I never thought to look them up this time ::)
Many thanks
Carol
Added- I've just had a good look through and find that none of them do anything as recent as 2005 or 2007.Although someone does offer still photo's in Gaithersburg which is where I suspect Phyllis is buried.
-
Hi Carol,
1st on the list for Montgomery doesn't specify and dates - just says "Public Records library lookups and copying. Obituaries. Pension records at National Archives in DC. City directories at Library of Congress"

From what I can tell, such recent Maryland death certificates are only available to surviving relatives and a few other particular categories: http://vsa.maryland.gov/html/death.cfm
-
So it does Sandra :-[ I didn't read it properly did I ,thanks for pointing that out to me ;)
Thanks Shelley, hmmm they're not like the UK ones that I'm used to are they?
Oh well that's that idea knocked on the head then ::)

Hi Carol: Good news. Phyllis is buried with her husband.
Arlington National Cemetery is probably the most important cemetery in the U.S. And spouses are permitted to be buried there. So I thought it odd that your post said that Phyllis wasn't buried there with her husband.
You can search for her burial at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Nationwide Gravesite locator here: http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1
Make sure you select Arlington National Cemetery in the pull down menu, since there are two cemeteries listed with the name Arlington.
The grave is also on Findagrave.com, which is where I searched first. You can see Phyllis' entry and a picture of the gravestone here: http://www.rootschat.com/links/0f7a/
They seem to be buried in an above-ground mausoleum. The initials YNC indicate that Matthew McGuire was a Yeoman Chief Petty Officer, the senior enlisted rank in the Navy. Given his date of birth, he probably served during World War II
Hope this helps.

I don't how or if you'd be able to get further information from this, but Phyllis' estate is included in this index: http://jportal.mdcourts.gov/willsandtrusts/index.jsf
I found a possible lead on one of her children, which I will send you via private message.

Hi Johnnyboy
My original posting was in 2008 I have since discovered that they are buried together, thanks ;D I now even have a photo of their grave.
That's interesting about the post he held, and yes he did serve during WW2 and after, the family were noted onboard a ship heading back from Guam in 1951.
Shelley- thanks so much for the PM,funnily enough someone also PM'd me last night with the wills website and it does confirm what I'd found, that her daughter still seems to be nearby ,and has reverted back to her maiden name.
From the names of the interested parties to that will,it looks very much as though the older daughter has died-now that's a shame as she is the one we are keen to find!
My pal whose mum grew up living next door to Phyllis in England is going to write to that Gaithersburg address.
Fingers crossed!

Hi Carol: I'm glad you're as far along in the hunt as you are. My search for Phyllis's burial site took about a minute on Findagrave and another few minutes to confirm it by a search of Arlington National Cemetery.

Hi all, I have just returned to this query and find to my horror that I never responded to your final comment.
Shelley, you very kindly found me Phyllis's will http://jportal.mdcourts.gov/willsandtrusts/index.jsf
Can anyone tell me which of the 9 parts of it we need to buy to tell us more about the family?
My pal wrote to the Gaithersburg address but did not get a reply, our theory is that they've all moved away ;D
We think that one of the girls reverted back to her maiden name but the oldest one married and has moved away(or died),I'm hoping that part of her mum's will may give us a lead to her married surname or any children any of them might have had.
Many thanks

I would think the Last Will and Testament would include people that she was leaving her estate to and may include their addresses or the towns where they lived at the time. The list of interested persons might mention family members as well.

I've avoided naming names of living persons here, so you'll have to fill in the blanks!
I thought I would have a look at the Maryland probate record for Phyllis McGuire. In case you haven't seen it, the personal representative listed on the search results looks to be a close relative, living in 2007 in Gaithersburg. Since no attorney is listed on the probate record, that person most likely administered the estate. And, if you wrote to the Gaithersburg address that is on the probate record and received no reply, then it is is likely that the p. representative moved between 2007 and when you wrote the letter. A person with the same name is listed on beenverified.com in Montgomery Village, MD, which is a neighboring town.
I also noticed the mention of Matthew's family going in 1951 to Cedar Grove, New Jersey in the thread. That prompted me to search for him in the U.S. census records on familysearch.org. There are 1920 and 1930 U.S. census listings for Matthew McGuire, 8 and 18 years old, living with his family at 437 Broadway, Elizabeth, New Jersey, which is 18 miles south of Cedar Grove. In the 1940 U.S. census, the family is still at the same address in Elizabeth, but Matthew McGuire is not with them. He is in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Mitchel Field in Hempstead, New York (on Long Island). Matthew seems to have enlisted in the U.S. Army as early as 1935, since he is listed on the 1940 census page as living at the same place in 1935. Here's a link to the 1940 census page: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89MB-SZ72?mode=g&i=27&cc=2000219. Matthew must have served in the Army and then re-enlisted in or transferred to the U.S. Navy.
There seem to be a boatload of McGuires currently living in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Perhaps Matthew and family were going to visit relatives there. Perhaps relatives of his still live there.
Hope this helps.

Hi Johnny,
I haven't read your reply in full (I will do that later) as I am just in the middle of reading Phyllis's will, and of course I now have the names of a couple more family members whom I knew nothing about.
It is looking very likely that the oldest daughter b 1944 has died though.
Thanks
Carol

Johnny thanks for your personal message.
I believe with the info that I have from the will (now that Shelley told me which pages to apply for ;D )
That I have narrowed down some of the next generation and they are on social media.
My next step is to try contacting them that way tomorrow.
Best wishes and thanks to everyone who has helped in this quest.
Carol
