Hello
I have family born in Russia (British subjects) to parents that were born in the UK, and am wondering if there is a military link that explains why they were all born overseas...
My GGG grandmother, Annie Hodson and her siblings were all born in Moscow, Russia between abt 1852 and 1865.
Her parents were James Hodson (B: Rochdale, Lancs abt 1820) and Joanna (nee McGill) (B: Glasgow, Scotland abt 1830). In the 1881 census James' occupation is listed as Retired Cotton Spinner but I thought it would be worthwhile seeing if there might be any military links...
Does anyone know if British forces were in Russia at this time? Or have any hints, tips or info that might help me with this query?

I doubt the connection is military.
The only possibility I can think of in that respect is perhaps officers attached to the British embassy in some sort of diplomatic/military attache role. But as a retired cotton spinner, he doesn't sound the type to have been a diplomat!
Other than that, certainly no British troops there.
Don't forget, Britain and Russia were at war from 1853-1856 (think Crimea, Baltic etc)

Thank you for your reply to my post - I have since found that they were est. the textile industry at that time in Russia so that is why he was there...
The info re: the war at that time is valuable in filling in some gaps too
