it was the only courage/mcrae marriage in scotland and since it was dingwall
ross & cromarty it seemed promising
although i worked out isabella i could not work out the man's first name
do you know what it is ?
maybe then we can see if they are on the census

Hi

If you know Roderick's date and place of death, you can go to Scotland's people www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and enter the details and be able to view the death cert which will give his parents' names. The same with Janet. It is a pay to view site but very reasonable.

It will cost 6 units or £1.20.

   Hi Spec,
Thank you so much for all the info. Your brother-in law's great-grandfather was my husband's great-grandmother's brother. She was Isabella.
Alfred Courage and Isabella Mcrae had 5 daughters, They were : Fredetta ( Etta ) Courage-- Bella Jane Courage...Alice Courage--Jessie Courage...And Mary Ann Courage.------Mary Ann married married Alexander Irvin Drummond, They had a son, Alexander Mcrae Drummond and I think when they immigrated to Canada, they had a daughter, Mary Etta Drummond.
Grandfather Drummond went to university in Aberdeen and became a Lawyer. We're trying hard to get info on the Drummond's place of birth.

A`carter was someone who transpoted good around:

and scroll down to carter

I'll look the family up on the 1891 and 1901 census but I can't give you a full list as after 1875 births aren't up on the free familysearch site and I'd have to go to the pay to view site Scotlands People which I've done already with Alexander. You could register yourselves:

I'll see what I can find on the censuses and then tell you how to do the searches for yourselves  :)

I think you've got the wrong Roderick Macrae!  The blacksmith one who died May 1871 was married to Ann Matheson on 28th March 1851, Urray. As we have a marriage to Janet (Jessie)Maclennan in 1850 and children of the couple to 1862, at least, I think you've got the wrong man.

The marriage certificate of Isabella Mcrae and Alfred Courage, 29 Jan 1886, which ev and I looked at a while ago, has Isabella's parents as both still alive and Roderick's occupation stated as general labourer.

Could you go back to your brother in law and mention that he's got the wrong death. Also the information that i gave you yesterday about Donald Mcrae and Ann Forsyth will not apply to this family.

The 1909 (January 29th)  death for Jessie/Janet must be correct as it lists her as being married to Roderick McRae, thatcher - which he was in 1881. She died at the address listed on the 1891 census - 14 Mill Street, Dingwall. Unfortunately, the informant was a John Fraser, grandson and gave no information about her parents except that they were McLennan

Hi Dru

William Drummond and Elizabeth Burr were George Drummond's father - George was Alex Drummond's father.

Your chart would go something like this:

William Drummond = Elizabeth Burr        John Kelman  = Isabella Reaper = ? Robertson

                               |                                           |

                               George Drummond     =     Ann Kelman

                                                            |

                                                   Alexander Irvine Drummond

I don't know believe that Henry and Isabella are the same family. I thought that they might be but I can't see a link.

Hi Spec

It's a bit difficult - I can't find a death for your real Roderick yet - I've had a look and it seems that he might have been alive when Jessie died but  :-\ :-\ :-\

I'll keep looking for you. This shoud give his parents. Ages on the censuses are a bit hit or miss - our ancestors weren't always too helpful!  The only consistent thing is that he was born Fodderty.

It must not  be nice to find that the death/tombstone is not the correct one. I used what you said  about the 1871 death and then I didn't feel it fitted somehow - maybe 6th sense - and then found that it was the wrong one  :'(

Hi Spec  :D

I'm wondering if Roderick was a widower when he married Janet.

Here they are on the 1851 census

Kinnellan, Contin

Roderick McRae, 30, farm servant, b. Fodderty
Janet, 22, b. Lochbroom
Ann,daughter, 9, b. Ferintosh
Farquhar, son, 5,  b. Fodderty
William, son, 2, b. Fodderty

I don't think that Janet is old enough to have had Ann. I've checked their marriage entry (1850) and Janet is Janet McLennan of Kinnellan.

This is interesting!

Tollie, Fodderty

Alexander McKenny, 70 +, farmer,
Jannet, 65-69, ag lab
Anne, 25-29

I've finally found them in Dingwall on the 1901 - very badly interpreted as MacHal  ::)

14 Mill Street, Dingwall

Roderick MacRae, 79, b. Fodderty
Jessie, 70, b. Lochbroom

So - to find Roderick's death - maybe it was after Jessie after all  :-\
Title: Re: Mcrae
Post by: Gadget on Sunday 27 April 08 11:10 BST (UK)
Still having problems locating Roderick's death - could he have moved to Banff or somewhere else after Jessie died. I've not yet tried Inverness which is a possibility.

In 1841, Janet is already working in Leckmelm, Lochbroom (this is a few miles east of Ullapool, overlooking Loch Broom).

The household marks on the census page are confusing, She is either living alone or in the household of Roderick McDonald, a crofter, age 75, and his family:

Janet McLennan, 10, Female Servant, born County
