Can someone please look up a Hunter Ritson b St Bees Cumbria 1851 on the 1901 census - maybe in Toxteth Liverpool? Also a Miriam (Marie) Bagot Barnes age unknown, but younger I think again probably Liverpool. They married at Our lady and St Nicholas & St Anne, Liverpool 1907.
Many thanks
Ian
-
Sorry, no sign of either in 1901 on A.....ry.
Both in 1891, but presume you have that already.
Marriage is in Freebmd also.
Maybe they were elsewhere at the time of the census?
Maybe someone else could look for you?

Hi & Thanks
actually I don't have 1891 - I was working backwards - I would be extremely grateful for that info
Ian
-
Hi
When you say both. Were they together? I am particularly interested in Miriam's (Marie(?) ) whereabouts and age.
Thanks
Ian
-
No they were not together.
If you look in Familysearch.org, you can find Hunter Ritson's birth, marriage, and entry in 1881 census - free!
In the 1891 census he is a grocer and provision dealer age 40. His sister Grace [mistranscribed as Genie ???] age 35, house keeper, is with 3 grocer apprentices, nephews, John Savage age 19, John R. Whiting age 22 and William H. Whiting also 19. There is also Wilson Whiting age 12 a scholar, and Sarah Lyson, servant age 22.
I'll have to go for another look at Miriam Bagot Barnes.

Thnaks very much kooky
Yes I had got the marriage, birth (& sister Grace and possibly another sibling) from IGI & free BMD respectively. I am going to order the marriage cert in any case. I also know Hunter Ritson died 1922 in Toxteth Liverpool. On a birth cert of one of Miriam Barnes' children her name was down as Marie Bagot Ritson formerly Barnes - Don't know if this helps. The mraie is why I didn't originally find 'Miriam' in BMD.

She is mistranscribed as Mariam and is with her parents William and Elizabeth C. in 1901.
In 1891 she is at Melbourne House, Harrington. Her father is a mining engineer.
There are 2 sisters, Edith Hester 11 months, and Hilda C. age 9.
There are also John Murray Hodgson and Mary A.M. Hodgson, step children.

Hunter Ritson married Esther Braithwaite at Toxteth Park, St Silas in 1893 (Lancs BMD)
Ian
-
do you know if its the same chap as married in 1889 in West Derby District of Liverpool ?
-
No sorry don't
The 1891 census that Kooky provided (previoius trail) said he was with his sister aged 40 grocer (don't know address) BUT n o mention of a wfe (was he a widower?). You wouldn't think Hunter Ritson was a common name BUT three marriages? Is it a coincidence that sister Grace was in West Derby, Liverpool too in 1891 however?
Confusing?

Thsi gets starnger. the marraige i nwest Derby is to margaret Craig. there are the two deaths of a maragaret Craig. the first aged 34 in Jun Q 1889 (Toxteth Park) and the second aged 30 in Jun Q 1892 (West Derby).
The second seems more likely to me, so it looks like he may be one and the same Hunter Ritson & married three times.

You wont know if its Margaret Craig or Lavinia Manifold w/o getting the Cert or having access to the full Register .... and whichever must have died before April 1891 where he is shown as WID ....
-
Thanks
I found the marriage of Hunter Ritson to Margaret Craig again on the Lancashire BMD site so this looksabout right.
ian
-
so, have you looked for a death of the Ethel / Edith whichever that he married in 1893 - if she died before 1901, he's alone and we cant use a christian name only / spouse search ....
-
Hello again
Yes i did thanks BUT this one I can't find I'm afraid.
The Lancs BMD site is great for birth & marriages but it doesn't seem to have deaths for Liverpool transcribed yet
Ian
-
FreeBMD then ?
-
Thanks
I tried that too but under the names - perhaps I will try just the initial only
Ian
-
its a tough one not being able to find him / them in the 1901 census - using just christian names, ages etc - and with Hunter just PoB of Cum* doesnt tease out any obvious mistrans ::)
-
They werent lucky with children - as well as that Elfrida, this looks like another daughter ?

Does anyone know where the Harrington is where Miriam Barnes is in 1891?
Ian

Got there in the end - looking for kids with unusual forenames in the BMD and seeking them on the census revealed:-
1901 - RG13/3432; Folio: 135; Page: 15 - Toxteth Park
172, Aigburth Road
Hemter [sic] Hilson [sic] 50 Head Grocer St Benet?, Cumberland

Marjorie B Hilson* 2 dau Liverpool
Aldra E Hilson 1 dau do
Ellen L Ross 29 Visitor Leicester
*Registered as Margery Beryl .....
-
That's brilliant
I would never have found him, so Esther was from Cumberland too...
I just need to find Miriam Barnes fom the 1891 census and then I can track back the other way.
Thanks for all your help today
Ian

You have Miriam Barnes 1891 census at Melbourne House, Harrington, earlier in this convoluted thread!
Kooky
-
Assume this is the 'transcription' ?
Always helps to quote the Census Refn (Year, PIECE, Folio etc), so that a re - search doesnt have to be done ....... and reduces the convolution level ;)

Thansk Once again and point noted
All I need now is Miriam's age on that census from someone please, then I can work back.
There is a coincidence here in that she had a chid in 1922 at a place called Melbourne house BUT in Chapel -en-le-Frith, Derbyshire
Many thanks
Ian
-
Sorry, didnt notioce that her age wasnt shown in that 'transcription' :P

Just found this thread through a Google search for "Ritson +grocer" (thank God for Google!), and have now joined up to RootsChat.
Don't do anything else...and certainly don't buy any BDM certs....until we have talked at length. I have masses of info, certificates, census entries, etc, for the Barnes family you are interested in, and their forbears back into the C18th.
We are in fact a perfect research match - I've already done loads of work going back, and I was just beginning to move forwards in time to try and trace any descendants of Hunter & Miriam Ritson ....who would be my cousins, as my mother's mother was Miriam Barnes's sister, Edith.
Anyway, I'll stop nattering on the open forum, it could get boring for others. Lets get in touch by PM?

Ian,
Have you got all the info that you need concerning Hunter Ritson 1850-1922 that was exercising your interest a few years back ?
Nev.
-
Hi Nev
Yes thansk apart from info on Burnley James Yearwood (bn St Vincent 1877) with whom Miriam had a child in 1921 (Hunter died 1922)
Ian

Hi Ian,
Fine - Hunter Ritson was a member of a fascinating family from Wasdalehead in Cumberland, but he was the only one to be married three times ?
