Susannah DOUGLAS was married to Henry HARDIE/HARDY 8 May 1838 parish of Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland, aged 21. Her youngest child (George HARDIE) was born July 1845. Henry HARDIE remarried in 1848, so presume she had died before this. All research has come to a death end so any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Haysom
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Nothing at all showing for her on the OPRs is there :-\ The only clue I could see was the name of what looks like their first born daughter which might connect with the name of Susannah's mother:
GRACE BUCHANAN HARDY Christening: 22 JAN 1840 Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland

Thanks for that Monica, a good idea.

Hi Haysom,
I have found the family MI in Crosbie Kirkyard:
Erected by Gabriel Douglas and Margaret Anderson his spouse in memory of their son John who died 17 Oct 1835 aged 6 months and their daughter Chrustina Elizabeth who died 15 Aug 1840 aged 6 yrs. The above Gabriel Douglas died 3rd Sept 1846 aged 62 yrs. His daughter Rhonda died 22 Dec 1846 aged 30 John Anderson Merchant Riccarton died at Troon 17th Aug 1838 aged 87 yrs. His son George died in Petersburg State of Virginia 24th May 1838 aged 39 yrs. The above Margaret anderson died at Glasgow 26th June 1867 aged 71 yrs. Margaret Howat Relict of Henry Thomson died 20th Nov 1908 aged 81 yrs.
Gabriel Douglas by his first marriage had a daughter Rhonda mentioned on the MI above.
Also a daughter Susan b. 1818 married 8th May 1838 (as published in the Ayr Advertiser) to Henry Hardy
Also a daughter Jean b abt 1819 married 27th Feb 1839 as published in the Ayr Advertiser) to Richard Marshall
Margaret Anderson (2nd wife of Gabriel Douglas) had a previous marriage to William Cunningham Howat (farmer) married 25th May 1860 and they had
a daughter Mary Howat b abt 1822 married 9th Nov 1842 (as published in the Ayr Advertiser) to David T Buchanan
a son William Howat b about 1824 d 15 Aug 188? Liverpool (as published in the Ayr Advertiser)
a daughter Margaret listed on the MI above
Gabriel Douglas and Margaret Anderson besides daughter Christina and son John listed on the MI had a daughter Ann b abt 1836 married 2 Jul 1855 to Robert Sturrock.
Gabriel Douglas was living in Templehill in the 1841 census. His daughter Rhonda died in Irvine.
Son John Anderson was possibly married to Mary Boyd who died on 3rd Oct 1832 but it would need to be further researched to confirm this.
Hope this helps
-
Phew, LL, that's great info for Haysom :D
Were there no details of Gabriel's first wife, mother to Rhonda, Susannah and Jane? Hopefully, sister Jane lived past 1855 to let Haysom confirm her name from her DC.
Regards.
Monica :)

Could not find Gabriel's first marriage to Elizabeth Paterson but I did find marriage #2
Marriage cert for Gabriel Douglas and Margaret Anderson (wife 2)
1832 Kilmarnock 28 Feb
Gabriel Douglas block master and Margaret Anderson both in the Sow Church Parish after proclamation were married
-
Here is the only birth cert that would fit for Gabriel Douglas:
30 Nov 1784 Gabriel Douglas parents John Douglas and Mary Newton born Jedburgh Roxburgh
John Douglas watchmaker in Jedburgh and Mary Newton had a child born 7th July 1784 baptized the 30th November said year named Gabriel. James Chisholm late Baillie and ?? Elliot Mason both in Jedburgh witnesses
-
Birth year would fit for Gabriel given he showed as aged 62 in 1846 so born c. 1784. Perfect fit :)

This looks to be Gabriel in the 1841 census. I'll list as is showing on FreeCen rather than the other index. Everyone showing as born in the county:

Ann Douglass 5

Also at Templehill:
Hillan Hardie, 25 - likely mis transcription of Henry? This is from Freecen, the other index even more misleading....
Robert Hardie, 2
Grace, 1

It now gets confusing as I have found another headstone in Crosby Kirkyard that connects Gabriel Douglas and a possbile 3rd wife of his. You will have to do some research to verify the next bits that I send you:
Erected by James Alexander Cabinet Maker, Troon in memory of his children Anna died 27th Jan 1840 aged 5 mnths
William dies 28 Sep 1833 9?) aged 11 mths
Jessie died 28 Aug 1836 (?) aged 19 mnths
Isabella died 22 Dec 1839 aged 9 yrs
The above James ALexander died 27 Oct 1867 aged 76 yrs
His grandson Gabriel Douglas who died in infancy
His son James late of St. Vincent died 29 May 1878 aged 490 yrs
His wife Agnes Tillery died 21 Jul 1893 aged 91 yrs
His daughter Agnes Relict of Mark Thompson dies 30th Nove 1903
And his last surviving daughter Jane who died at Troon 30th May 1906
Notes: Agnes Tillery was the Post Mistress at troon 1855 - 1879
Int eh 1841 census there is also a son Richard aged 10. Either someone has re-chiselled this stone mistaking 3's for 5's or the origional inscriptions had the wrong years. Isabella's death is certainly in Dec 1839 (Ayr Advertiser) and not 1859. Stone erected by Watson & Adam Troon.
Agnes relict of Mark Thompson had a prior marriage to Gabriel Douglas on 14th April 1845 as per Ayr Advertiser. The notice in the AA also indicated that Gabriel Douglas' first wife was Elizabeth Paterson d. 20th April 1831.
There are notes that this Stone and MI are connected with the next two.

Notes: William Tillery was living at Lochgreen in the 1841 census and was born Belhelvie, Aberdeen
Succeedes in 1832 as gardener by son William
George Douglas Tillery above possibly named after George Douglas of Rodinghead factor to the Ducke of Portland 1810 - 1826
See also Nicol Brown Tillery in Feu REgister, Feus No 8 and 152 possibly named after Nicol Brown Esq. of Lanfine (Aiton's Ayrshirep.593)

-
Monica that looks like the right one with Gabriel living Templehill.
I will see if I can find a Robert Hardie death that matches with the 2yr old in the census. I bet they transcribed the name wrong for Henry.
-

12 June 1839 Robert Hardy
22 Jan 1840 Grace Buchanan Hardy

Hello LL & Monica,
Oh my gosh, so much information. That's amazing. I've been away from my computer for 2 days, being a long weekend in New Zealand. I am obsolutely amazed at what you have found. I will go and sit down and read over your replies more fully. Thank you both so much.

Hello Monica & L L,
The Ayr Adverstiser seems to be a great source of information. I would be interest to look at it, can it be accessed online or who would I contact for a hard copy?
For your information Grace Hardie is my great, great grandmother who emmigrated to New Zealand on the ship The Armstrong, arriving in NZ 18 Feb 1865, with her husband Charlie McMaster, her baby Charles & Robert Hardie (presumably Grace's brother).
Thank you both once again for the time & work you have given to my family research.

Hi Christine,
The East Ayrshire Family History Society is a really good start as a contact. They have many publications that you can purchase as well as access to the AA and have been really good doing lookups for me as I have no access directly to the indexes or Fiche being in Canada myself.
The Dick Institue has also started to index many of the old papers from the area and to access look ups you can contact the Baird Institute
Community Librarian (Heritage Services)
Tel: 01290 421701
Email: baird.institute[at]east-ayrshire.gov.uk (replace [at] with @)
Is there any more help you require on your tree?
-
Sorry , forgot to let you know the following:
Ayr Advertiser
1834/97, 1899/1939, 1941/45, 1950/63, 1965/7, 1969/71 are held at the Baird Institute. Some are on microfilm but most are bound volumes.
-
Hello L L,
Thank you for that information.
Christine
-
Hi L L,
I don't need any more help on my family tree at the moment. I feel I have enough information now, with new leads to follow-up. Thanks
Christine
-
I suspect that the MI's gave you a lot of new information and new names. Glad to help!
-
Hi L L,
Yes and 1841 census revealed some very interesting results shows Grace & Robert Hardie with Gabriel Douglas only 4 households away.
If you even need any information from New Zealand let me know.
Thanks. Goodbye
Christine

Re Gabriel Douglas 7/7/1784 Jedburgh, Roxburghshire - son of John Douglas and Mary Newton - siblings Walter 26/2/1786 Jedburgh a Master Watch and Clock maker & Jeweler - married Isabella Anderson, Jean Jan 1788 Jedburgh - married John Lamont, Christian 7/12/1789 Jedburgh - married John Aitken (Aiken), John 10/9/1794 Jedburgh a Master Watch and Clock maker & Jeweler - married Mary McLiver.
I have the Contract between Gabriel Douglas 1784 and his second wife Margaret Anderson 7/6/1795 (also a Vintner in Irvine) she died 6/6/1867 Glasgow. They also had a son Gabriel O ? Douglas born c1826 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire a Watchmaker and Engraver - died before 1874. He was the one who married Agnes Alexander 14/4/1845 at Dundonald - children Christina Agnes Tillery born June 1845 Troon; died 1/9/ 1890 Glasgow & Gabriel B Douglas born 15/10/1847 Troon - he died 1851 Troon :D

I haven't worked out who these Douglas people are? A different Gabriel to Gabriel 1784? See below :o
This looks to be Gabriel in the 1841 census. I'll list as is showing on FreeCen rather than the other index. Everyone showing as born in the county:
Gabriel Douglass 55, inn keeper,
Jane Douglass 45
Richard Douglass 25, Independent
Ann Douglass 5
Marry Gerran 25, servant
James Gibb 20, printer
Margt Nouat 10
Marry Nouat 15
Marry Wallace 15, servant
John Anderson 20, coachman
Address: Tempelhill, Dundonald Ayrshire

Hello Rockhoper,
I believe this is the same Gabriel than was born in 1874. I am not sure who the other people listed at that address (The Portland Inn Hotel) are.
-
Yes I agree about it being the same Gabriel - his first wife Elizabeth Paterson died c1831 and he married Margaret Anderson on 28/2/1832 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Gabriel was a Watchmaker and Inkeeper and Vintner and Margaret a Vintner - they were at the Portland Arms Troon by 1837 to 1846 (at least)
I'm wondering if Richard 25 "Independent" was another son - he would have been born c1816 with Ann Douglas 5 being Richard's daughter? I wonder too if John Anderson 20 "Coachman" was a nephew of Margarets? The girls are likely Mary Wallace Howat 18 and Margaret Howat 12 - even though their ages don't match the Census (also Nouat does not make sense as a name). Who then is Jane 45? A bit of a puzzle ::)
-
Further on the Douglas family - 18 Clock and Watchmakers. John Douglas c1759 Jedburgh, Roxburghshire - married (1) Mary Newton/Nuton c1762 in c1783 - Mary died Jan 1803 and is buried at Loudoun Kirk, near Galston together with a James D Douglas - John Douglas c1759 died c1833 - children of John and Mary - Gabriel 1784, Walter 1786, Jean 1788, Christian 1789 and John 1794.
John c1759 - married (2) Agnes Allan c1782 in 1808 at Gaslton, Ayrshire - children Mary 1810, Isabella 1812, George 1814, James 1816, Margaret Mason 1819 and Maria 1819 (twins)
