Title: Where do I look for information on the relatives of Siegfried Sassoon?
Post by: RosalindElsiE on Monday 21 April 08 21:37 BST (UK)
At present I am researching as a further branch of my family
which I only discovered yesterday afternoon (Sunday), that
one of my Great Aunt's Dulcie nee Franklin was married to a
Capt., Sassoon Joseph Sassoon.

Her parentage was Frederic Samuel Franklin and mother was Lucy Amy nee Magnus, father was Sir Philip Magnus, 1st Bart., M.P. of London.

His father was Joseph Sasson and his mother was Louise, daughter
of of Baron Horace de Gunzburg of St Petersburg, Russia.

He was born in 1885 and died on 7 February 1922. but he's related as a first cousin to the World War 1 poet Siegfried Sassoon.

I would like to know if he fought in any of those contemporary wars or any information about him that's if anyone can help me please.

Thank for your searches and I do use that Maculocchs site all the time,
as it was the first good one that I found. Including that I am in it too.

I have not met one of the Sassoon's relatives yet, also it's ok that
you've not been able to find the Joseph that I'm after.

The Joseph Sassoon that I am after if it's of any help was related to
Siegfried Sassoon, I have found a wee bit about him on the
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ site.

Annie sorry and oops, I should have looked more carefully.

Also no rush yet for the information, I am just doing the research in most likely a very unprofessional way.
Because I have made a lot of Word files that was before I had bought the Family Historian software but I still have to get used to that too.

 :D

All of your searches have taught me loads in just a few minutes,
Thanks

Rosalind, you'll have a great time.  I believe Family Historian is one of the best you can get.
Interesting to see you are related to Rosalind Franklin, I should have picked up on that - knew the two names were familiar to me.  Yes, she should have had the Nobel prize too.
What a family you come from!  So very famous.

Silvery thanks and yes I am having lots of fun researching also
Rosalind Elsie Franklin was my 1st cousin, one of my friends
told me that she's now on the National Curriculum. That's praise.

I heard Sir Aaron Klug on the radio 2 weeks ago say that had
Rosallind lived that she should have received the Nobel Prize for
Chemistry what a pity that they don't give them out posthomously
(sp).

Yes what a family I come from and my Father knew about Seigfried Sassoon but didn't say anything.

Thank you Annie and even more fascinatijng information to read
and research further into today and so on.

Why do some of the Sassson's men have this Sassoon as their
middle name?  I can't understand the reason for it.

E.G. Capt., Sassoon Joseph Sassoon.

Hello Rosalind,
I was really excited to come across (albeit rather late) your quest for information regarding Sassoon Joseph Sassoon. I have in my possession a toleware military 'hat box' on which there are two brass plaques. One reads Jones, Chalk and Dawson, 6 Sackville St London and the other S J Sassoon, 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.
I contacted a Mr Keith Miller from the National Army Museum who kindly researched the name and replied:  "The hatbox would have been for the dress helmet of an officer in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. It would have been supplied by the firm of Jones,Chalk and Dawson who were one of many firms of tailors who supplied uniforms in the early part of the twentieth century – the firm is still trading today. These uniform items were only supplied to officers who had to purchase their own uniforms and weapons. Sassoon would have purchased the helmet when he joined the regiment.
The rather strangely named Sassoon Joseph Sassoon joined the regiment in Feb 1907 as a Second Lieutenant, was promoted to Lieutenant in Oct 1908 and Captain in Feb 1913. He served throughout the First World War but was seconded to the War Office from Feb 1916 until he left the army in Dec 1919."
I hope this is of some interest to you.

                                                             Regards, surreyman

Thanks surreyman
yes this information is very interesting and I am not sure if this is
the right idea about why Sassoon Joseph Sassoon has this strange name but it might have been like some people are called:

Son of Joseph Sassoon = Sassoon Joseph Sassoon
although I am only guessing here.

Also the tailors is still in business I've checked on Google.

They all seemed to have eccentric and weird names.

Yes they do seem to have strange names with the exceptions of the 2 brothers of Siegfried Sassoon, who were Michael Sasson,
he was the eldest, Siegfried was the middle son and their brother:
Their parents were Alfred Ezra Sassoon and Georgina Thornycroft.

Hamo Watts Sassoon, who died on 1st November 1915, from wounds received in action on board the hospital ship S.S. Kilonan Castle.

2nd Lt. Hamo Watts Sassoon gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Engineers.1 He fought in the Gallipoli Campaign, and was wounded at Suvla Bay, losing his leg.
