A few of the names I am researching in Ayrshire are Petrie/ Ralston/ Millar/ Jaffrey/ Dickie/ Wylie/ Speirs. Is there anyone else researching any of these names? Donna
-
Hi
I have a Janet Jaffrey married to Colin Shearer Haddow in Kilwinning 1853. My connection is through Colin's second wife Isabella Orr Richmond.
-
Hello: Thank you for your response. I also have some Janet Jaffreys , but I don't think there is any connection. I will give them to you anyway
Janet jaffrey 1760 daughter of David Jaffrey and Janet Boyd
Janet 1777-1819 daughter of Robert Jaffrey and Janet Allen. Robert was son on above David
Janet jaffrey 1809- 1864. Janet was the daughter of Peter Roberton Jaffrey and Francis McClelland. Peter was son of Robert and Janet Allen.
Janet married Sydney Millar
All come from Irvine. That is where I pull away from the Jaffreys and continue with the Millars. I do know of some connections to the Jaffreys if you want me to pass along your e-mail. Let me know, and maybe this older information may be of some help. I also have the names and dates for most of the siblings, if that helps. Donna

Hi Sharon: I thought I had replied to this posting, but I do not see it, so forgive me if I am repeating myself. I don't have information about the specific people you mention, but I may have some sort of other connection with your Speirs, and Dickie. I have Sydney( Sidney) Millar 1808-1884, born Irvine to Archibald Millar and Jean Dickie. The Speirs come in when they name their first child- Agnes Speirs Millar. I thought the Speirs would probably come from the mother's side, but have been unable to find anything concrete. This may or may not help you, but it may also help me if you know of some sort of connection.. Donna
-
Hi Icini
Not somebody else calling me Sharon!! Wish I had her money though.
I can't see a connection at the moment but have not got all my notes to hand. Will keep this on file and get back to you if I find a connection.

Forgive me Sarah!!! I guess my brain filled in the first name with a familiar sound. Again apologies...Donna
-
Don't worry it's quite flattering really esp since I'm over 50 and not exactly slim!!
-
Sarah, I forgot to mention my Wylie.( Wyllie) Janet Wylie 1779 Kilwinning, married to Alexander Ralston 1804. she named one of her sons Robert (1818), so she may have a Robert Wylie in her past. Do you know any of these? Donna
-
Hi Donna, Just seen your message , its late so will get back to you in a day or so. I have a Janet but born 1796 married David wilson. I don't have a Janet further back in my direct tree but will let you have what I have got. Mine seemed to be Wylie back to early 1700's. Before that I have seen it both as WYLLIE and WAYLIE!!

Hello; My Margaret Dickie was born 1770, parents Robert Dickie, and Jean Gemmil. It may be yours mother or something, but I have no dates as to marriage for her. Her sister Jean was mother to my 3rd great grandfather, Sidney Millar. Donna

Thanks Sarah: (I always double check your name before posting, just to be sure). One thing I find funny is that those towns were quite small- way back when ,,and yet it's hard to find a relationship. At one time Irvine only had a few hundred people, and loads of them with the same name. Yet try as I might , sometime I feel I must hallucinating that they lived there at all. Of course sometimes I find a really strong connection, as I have with the Jaffrey line, and my Dickson line in Lanark, but most of the time it's dig dig dig. Best wishes..Donna

Hi Donna
Regarding the Ralston connection. I am descended from a James Ralston born in Tarbolton, Ayr m. Janet Murdoch, also born in Tarbolton, Ayr.
They had at least 3 children that I have found so far - Marion, Jessie and John all born about 1837 - 1847.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Regards Lisa

I have two James Ralstons. James 1834- 1907, son of Alexander Ralston and Janet Wyllie. He married Janet Boyd and had the following children: Agnes ( 1861),

Hello Wendy, I don't know whether you still look at these pages but I too am descended from Thomas McLaren and Helen Higgins. My Great Grandmother was Margaret McLaren born 1835 in Kilmarnock. She was a sister of David McLaren born 1828.
I cannot go further back than Thomas and Helen but I would be interested to know more about any other McLaren descendants.

Hi
For what it's worth, I have a JOHN SPEIR who has turned up in my research. He owned a Saddlers shop in Burn's Statue Square, Ayr in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
I have more info and dates etc. If you think it might be of any use to you, I'll happily pass them on.
Regards
Brian
