Title: Armstrong/Rae in Eaglesfield Dumfries
Post by: freckles64 on Sunday 20 April 08 02:06 BST (UK)
I am researching my family ancestry in Eaglesfield Dumfriesshire. On a recent visit I found my relatives James Rae and Jane Grindlays resting place in Middlebie cemetery, but was unable to find any of the Armstrong's from my family.
Does any one know of another cemetery for Eaglesfeild? James and Janes Daughter, Mary married George Armstrong. These families were Clog makers and Masons/ Sculptors.
Grateful for any help,
Lynn :D

Hi Ev,
Georges parents were George Armstrong and Henrietta Robinson, from Eaglesfield. And I know that George and Mary's first son was James. Do you have any information?

Hi Ev,
Yes my tree is on Ancsetry.com. I have got so far and now I'm stuck. I thought I would find a local cemetary with their information, but the only one I found was small near Middlebie.
Thanks for trying,
Lynn

Sorry, I can't help regarding Armstrongs, but I do know that James Rae, Sculptor of Eaglesfield was my Great Grandfather on my Mothers' side of the family. My Grandmother was Eleanor Ormiston (nee Rae). James Rae and his wife Jane (nee Grindley) had nine children. I knew only a few: Eva Eden; Bonacasandra and of course my Grandmother. I know there were sons, James Jnr; Orlando & Oliver.
Bset wishes with your quest!

I had a great aunt Netta Armstrong who was born in Eaglesfield about 1870 or so. She was the daughter of a clogger but I know no more than that.  Netta married Fred Stodart of Crosslands farm at Waterbeck.  The messages on this thread are rather short of dates which makes it hard to plug in.  I would love to know more about this family.

you could try Springkell or Carruthers?  Think the two families reside next to each other at Sunnybrae.
