In looking in the 1851 census for ELIAS RUMSEY, he is recorded as being at 5 Cork Street in Camberwell.
His place of birth has been transcribed as Hants, Apeleham; I have looked closely at the record and can't improve on that but I am unconvinced that Apeleham is correct.
From local knowledge can anybody put forward a more plausible interpretation?
So far I have been unable to find him in the 1841 census; my guess is that he should be in Camberwell.

Maybe Appleshaw, which is near Andover.

isnt that Murphy's Law - virtually all the places on that page are easy to decipher .... Is the other Rumsey Head of Household related ....
1841 wont really help - so hopefully Nell's suggestion will lead somewhere ?

Thank you both for your extremely rapid responses.

I think the other head of household might be an Elias Rumsey who married a Sarah Lambert in 1835 at St Mary in Lambeth.
? Maybe :-\

Hi all :)
Someone on familysearch interpreted it as Appleshaw as well!
Elias Rumsey
Birth: About 1779 Appleshaw, Hampshire, England
Death: 14 FEB 1859 Camberwell, London, England
Spouse: Mary Herold
Marriage: 04 JAN 1801 St Mary'S, Lambeth, Surrey, England

An Elias Rumsey/Ramsey and a Sarah had children baptised in Southwark and Lambeth areas 1830s/40s.
Elias Rumsey and Mary ? had a daughter Charlotte baptised in 1819 in Camberwell.

Dear all
In terms of the 1851 census - the other Rumsey household on the same page is that of Elias's son Henry who is a night watchman and can be found by himself in the same census at McLeod's Brewery in Camberwell - note Henry's wife, Sarah (ne Insull), describes herself as "Brewers watchman's wife"
I have now discovered that Elias also had a son Elias b abt 1816 in Lambeth and on further research I think he will relate to the other Rumsey records that you have identified.
Thank you rootschatters - this website is an absolutely fantastic and valuable resource.

Hi Alan. Elias Rumsey was indeed from Appleshaw, Hampshire. I am descended from Elias, through his son Henry Rumsey. Henry's daughter Sarah Rumsey emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1862. Her cousin Elias Henry Rumsey also emigrated to Dunedin around the same time, but via the Australian Goldfields.
I hope you are descended from the family also and look forward to hearing from you. Please send me a PM.

Thank you for your reply.
I am also descended from Henry Rumsey (one of my g-g-grandfathers) through his daughter Elizabeth (b 10 Oct 1849 at 3 Cork St Camberwell).
Elizabeth married Zachariah Frederick Turner on 17 Sept 1869 in Poplar. As far as I know they only had one child Alfred Turner born 26 Feb 1874 at 30 Risterne Place, Poplar. Alfred is my grandfather.
On 12 Dec 1877 Elizabeth dies at Bethnal House which appears to be a sort of Asylum. The death cert records that she died of General Paralysis and appears to have been there since Feb 1876.
I am unsure about Henry Rumsey's dob. An IGI record for Elias Rumsey born Appleshaw and married to Mary Herold gives children as Elias b abt 1816 and Henry b abt 1818 but other sources would seem to imply 1823. Do you have any other information?
