I would appreciate some help trying to sort out this family please.
William Hobbs born Kings Brompton / Brompton Regis in 1785 or1787.
On the 1841 and 1851 census he is married to Mary.
In 1841 she is born 1790, not in Somerset and
In 1851 she is born 1796 in Chittlehampton, Devon
William has at least two children: Ann born 1804, and Selina born 1809.
The birth years would make it unlikely that Mary is their mother.
Can anyone find a marriage or two for William please?
Thank you
Glen

Hi
Just a thought...but in the 1841 cencus ages were rounded up/down by up to 5yrs so Mary could probably be the same person in both cencuses.

Hi
I see them in 1851 ... They have their granchildren living with them. Next door is their daughter Selena Tarr nee Hobbs, age 40, born South Molton, Devon.
This seems to be Selena's baptism;
CYLLENIA HOBBS
26 April 1812
South Molton
parents William Hobbs and Mary
In 1851 Mary Hobbs, the mother, is 55 , That would make her about 15 when having Selena. :-\
If Ann was b c 1804 and Selena/Cyllenia was born 1812 ...it seems that there would be more children .
Will look further

Hi again
In 1841 , Mary Hobbs is 45 and not born in county ...this would make her b 1796 , which is the same DOB as the 1851 ...seems to me that she is the same person albeit maybe not the mother of Ann and Selena.

hi again
Okay Chittlehampton is in the reg district of South Molton as is East Anstey,
I have found this on IGI;
William Hobbs = Elizabeth Knott
26 mar 1809
West Anstey ( submitted)
then this christening; extracted
Ann HOBBS
1 Oct 1809
East Anstey
parents; William and Elizabeth
I know the date is off as you have Ann b c 1804, but I cannot find a birth of an Ann to a William and Mary Hobbs in either Devon or Somerset.

Hi Deb,
Thank you so much for your help. This family line is driving me mad!!
I thought for once there was only one marriage in a generation and then I did the maths for Ann's birth!! Even for them the mother would have been very young, hence my thought too that there must have been an earlier wife for William.
I think I had got to the point that I couldn't make sense of anything I was seeing!
The marriage and christenings you have found certainly fit well and make sense.
I love the spelling "Cyllenia". The name travels down the generations with various spellings until the 1920's when it has changed to "Lena"
Thank you again for your replies

Hi Glen
Glad to be of help :)
where did you find that Ann was bc 1804. Do you know who she married ?
When I look for children of William and Mary Hobbs circa 1815 =/- 5 years there are a few ... born in the Tiverton Silverton areas which I think is part of South Molton. A lot of my family come from there !

I show my William Hobbs 1784 married to Mary ?
having son James Dec. 1813 in KingsBrompton.
More questions than answers - can not find a marriage anywhere for them
in Somerset.
