Title: Scarborough cemetery photographs - COMPLETED, thanks!
Post by: BassinghamTerrier on Saturday 19 April 08 08:26 BST (UK)
Hi

Is there anyone willing to take a couple of photographs for me please? I am unlikely to get back to the 'homeland' for several months yet and have just discovered the resting place of a few rellies, so I'm keen to get some pics.

Anyone interested, here are the details ...

REBE FLORENCE DOBSON
Woodlands, L 1 - 18, buried 08/04/1957, aged 60 yrs

KATE AGNES DOBSON
Manor Road, L (BOR) B 27, buried 27/03/1963, aged 85 yrs

FAITH DOBSON
Manor Road, P 11 - 31, buried 13/04/1895, aged 76 yrs

JOHN DOBSON
Manor Road, P 11- 31, buried 16/07/1900, aged 82 yrs

You can pm me for an email address to send them to.

Many thanks in anticipation,

MT ;)

Sorry - going to BUMP this one as I need some help please!!

I have a real query with the death date for JOHN DOBSON here as the grave details from Woodlands Crematorium that I received today say that he was buried on the 16th July, 1900, but the transcribed copy I have of the Dobson Family Bible says that he died on the 17th!! Presumably he suffocated in his coffin??  ;D

I know that I should order the death cert, but this is by far the easier way to do it - or at least it would be if I still lived there!

I really would appreciate someone nipping over to the plot and seeing what date he died.

Thanks in anticipation,

MT ;)

Hi MansfieldTerrier
I am hoping to make my annual pilgrimage to Scarborough sometime in the next few weeks.  I will be happy to take photos for you as I trawl through the cemeteries looking for my Abrams.

If anyone else wants photos taken at Manor Road or Woodlands let me know.

Hi MT
Yes of course you can.  I have plans for both the cemeteries so it shouldn't be difficult to find them all for you.  My partner is used to being dragged through graveyards now and is happy to be the cameraman :)  He even shows some interest from time to time!

Once the trip is organised I'll let you know the date and forward the photos when we get home.

Hi - I'm doing what I can to piece together my family tree from 1900 - most of my folk were from Scarborough. I've got photos of a number of the ones who died before I was born and thinking of the next step to locate graves, fo and get photos, there may be some in Manor Road.

What information is held on the plans you have? Even knowing where all the Websters are would be a good start and unfortunately I haven't got dates of death for the people I'm looking for.

One key one is my great uncle Fred Webster, as ironically his business was as a mason carving the gravestones, his workshop was in Manor Road.

Hi Dave

It's not as simple as just rooting around the boneyards! You need to contact Woodlands Crem, giving them details of your ancestors and they'll give you plot/location details.

They're very helpful!

Woodlands Crematorium,
Woodlands Drive,
Scarborough,

Thanks - I rang them earlier this week but they need full names and death dates which sort of catch22's me as I've got as far as the 1901 census then a bit stuck - I wondered if the plans showed where all the Websters were which would cut down the field work.

No, they don't.  :-[

The plans only show the 'zones' of the cemetery, ie area 'A', area 'O', etc.

The plans are really no use without you knowing the plot.

However, if you pm me your email, I'll be glad to send you scanned copies of the plans.

Dave, Do you have a William and Mary Webster in your tree?  The reason I ask is I happen to have taken a photo of a gravestone for them in Snainton.  The gravestone also has the name of Charles Webster, their grandson, on it.  William Webster was a farmer of East Carr House, Snainton.  I am more than happy to give you the transcription or forward the photo if it is of interest?

When I visited Woodlands the year before last I only had to give them the surname I was researching and they printed off a list of them all.  It's strange they couldn't do that for you.

Yes we do have Snainton links as well but that side of it is extremely hazy for me. Basically loads of Websters in the Falsgrave part of Scarborough, Rawlings and Codling from Cloughton. I understand my great grandad on both sides (my mum and dad were first cousins) came from Exeter and married into the Rawlings.

Thanks both

PS I had a John Dobson in the family as well, he married my father's sister, but he's a later one as he died in the late 70s. Don't know if he was of Scarborough origins or not.

Hi Sharon

When you next visit Scarborough, could you please photograph a couple of graves for me please?  They are both in Dean Road Cemetery.

Hannah Hewson d1881.  Plot number F 33 - 21
Elizabeth Hewson d1899.  Plot number F 30 - 21.

There may be another - I'm waiting to hear from burial records in Beverley re Abraham Jackson Hewson who died in 1846.  I'll let you know about that when I hear from them.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Sharon

I've heard  back from burial records at Beverley and they couldn't really give me much information.  My relative was Abraham Jackson Hewson who died in 1846.  All they could find was St Mary's Cemetery in Scarborough, with a burial (?) date of 24 October 1846.  However, they couldn't give me a plot number.  Not sure therefore if his grave will be easy to find.  If it is, please could you have a look for me ( ;D  :-*).  If not, don't worry - you're already getting two pictures for me after all!

Thanks again,
Sharon x

Hi Sharon

You've now got the same problem as me. I think have a Dobson in St. Mary's boneyard but need it checking in the MIs. As far as I can see, Ticker (the Moderator) has a copy of the book of MIs, but I've posted a couple of threads and even a pm for him, but he doesn't seem to be around.

And then ... to the best of my knowledge (I was 'home' in Scarborough a while back) many of the headstones have actually been moved and placed very close together.

Not very encouraging ...  :-[

I'd seen that and pm'd him, but he hasn't been online since 5 March.  How odd?!  Hope he's ok.

St Mary's is the one where the Bronte sister is buried?  Some of the headstones have been placed around the perimeter if I remember correctly, MT?  The graveyard in Snainton (I think it was) was much worse.  The headstones were placed along the perimeter but stacked standing upright (like books in a bookcase), so it was virtually impossible to read any of them!  Luck was smiling on me that day and I found my ancestor's stone in it's original position.

Sharon, a lot of the headstones are in a rough date order so I'll try to find it for you.

I'll photograph all the Dobsons and all the Hewsons I come across in all the graveyards, they may be of some use in the future to one of you guys.

Dave, would you like me to call into the Woodlands office and see if I can get a list of the Websters for you? I can then post them on or scan and email them to you.

Sharon

Ye St Mary's Church has had alot of the stones moved so it's not going to be easy to find the plot you are looking for sharon.

I believe Ticker is going some fund raising,so he's probably busy with all the training.(something was in the paper a couple of months ago)

Hi sharoncs.

did you get the correct plot for elizabeth.

As the clarkson's had a stone this would mean that the plot had been bought.Since Elizabeth died after the clarkson's and isn't related then she could not of been buried there.

I'd double check the plot number.

Hi MT, Sharon & Dave
I'm back from my trip to Scarborough.

MT, I trawled both graveyards and only one of your rellies (Rebe) has a headstone (she is buried with her mother).  I found that was also the case for most of my Abrams too.  I took a pic of the one for Rebe and will email it to you. Most of the detail at the bottom of the stone has been weathered away over the years but you can read most of her name.  I didn't think you would require photos of those without headstones, hope that was a correct assumption!

Sharon, I took some photos of Quay Street for you.  There is a number 25 but I don't think it's the original building.  I will forward the pictures to you over the next day or so.  I checked every single headstone in St Mary's but I couldn't find one for Abraham Hewson.  A lot of them were illegible, some had been moved to the perimeter and some even laid as a footpath! Those were the worstly worn ones of all.

Dave, I hit the same stumbling block as you when I asked Woodlands Office for a list of Websters.  Apparently there are 194 of them.  I guess they consider that too many to print off.  The man in the office said I would need to give him a year of death or first name, as he did you.  I do have some information about the Websters from Seamer as my g/grandfather worked for a William Webster on Seamer Moor Farm for many years.  I will piece together what I can for you and forward the details.

So guys, I'm sorry my trip wasn't more productive for you.

Sharon

Hi MT

I would have been ripping my hair out at Dean Road without your plan!  Even with it, I found it took a while to get my bearings.  It's a shame that so many plots are unmarked with a stone, mind you tons of those that are there have been eroded over the years.  Would that be the salt in the "sea air"?  The ones at St Marys were the worst for that.  I also photographed a headstone with your surname on it for a Thomas, Martha & Gertrude as it caught my attention.  Do you have a copy of it already?

I enjoyed the search but I am so disappointed I don't have arms full of photos and stuff for you all.

Yes thanks - got this lot. They are great-great-uncle and his family.

I'm now going to officially vacate this thread; can someone please pm me to let me know when they feel it is 'completed' and I will mark it as such so that it can be moved to the 'dead-thread-zone'?

Really? And who's charging that? The cemetery authorities demanding a fee for being on their territory? Or someone offering to take the photos for you?

Certainly I took my own photos for free when I was last there and I think it's a diabolical liberty if someone is asking for cash to do it! :(

I can't see how the cemetery authorities could charge you unless a member of their staff is taking the photos on your behalf? They wouldn't even know if you were there taking photos yourself surely? If a member of the public is trying to charge you for taking photos on your behalf that is out of order! I'm shocked!

Hi,
Thanks very much for letting us know about the error on the Boats page. We'll try to get it rectified.
Unfortunately we don't have a photo of this grave, although we would be able to take one as part of our grave finding service. We ask for £10 and will provide a photo and transcription of the inscription. If you'd like to take this forward please send a cheque payable to "Friends of Dean Rd and Manor Rd Cemetery to 9 Stepney Grove, Scarborough, YO12 5DF.
We'd be very interested in hearing about your relative's life story as part of our research into the history of people buried in the cemetery, and would be grateful for anything you could share.
Regards,
Jan Cleary
Chairman

this is the email i recieved.
I was looking for Robert "Tip" Heritage a skipper who swam 25 miles to shore only to die, he is one of my ancestors from the Heritage Family and i am bloody proud of him. I do not need any photos as i am getting them from the GWWPP and i have found them to be very good as i have used them before.

Falconheart, if you ring the Woodlands Cemetery in Scarborough they will be able to tell you the plot and grave number for your relative. If you post the info in the forum hopefully a local might offer to take a photo for you. Hope that helps (would offer myself but I won't be back up in Scarborough until next year)
