Hi, Am hoping someone can help as i am slowly going insane as i can't find one of my Ellis rellies!!
My GG father was a David Ellis born 1875-77. Supposedly in Penmaenmawr. I have his 1901 census record, although by then he was in Essex and his marriage certificate.
If anyone could help me find him in other census records, or his birth i would be grateful.
His father was called John, and was a labourer. He had died by the time of Davids marriage in '97.
Thanks!!!

Hi
The 1881 census is free to search at www.familysearch.org
There are 3 David Ellis entries who were b Caenarvon in that age range but none specifically in Penmaenmawr. However - 2 of the entries have a second christian name which your David doesn't seem to have
This is a possible entry but as mum was a widow - it doesn't help much at the moment
Well Street Nevin, Caernarvon - all b Nevin
John JONES 73 Retired Mariner
Margaret 72
Fanny ELLIS widow 37 daughter Dress Maker
William 9 Grandson
David 6 Grandson
John 3 Grandson
Ref RG11 Piece 5561 Folio 62 Page 23
I'll check the 1871 for you

The 1871 doesn't help at all - Fanny is shown as a mariners wife but her husband was John Ellis and here is their marriage
Marriages Mar quarter 1868
Ellis John Pwllheli Volume 11b Page 590
Jones Fanny
This is the full 1871 entry for Mill St Nevin - all b Nevin
Fanny Ellis 26
Margaret 3
William 5 months
Jane Jones boarder 21
Mary Jones boarder 15
Living either in the same household or next door were this couple
David Ellis 69 master mariner b Caernarvon Llan?
Mary 64 b Caernarvon Pistill

hi
have trawled through the welsh and essex census' so far to no avail.
I came across the ones you did, but as it says mariner, i assume its not the one. Oh well, one day i will find him. Think all my Welsh rellies are elusive!
Thanks for looking.

Not sure if I'm missing anything here but Penmaenmawr is the other side of the county from Pwllheli. The registration district would be with Dwygyfylchi - i.e Conway.

i went like ;D when i found him. Ordered the certificate.... :-\ certificate arrived. Tis not my David Ellis.
-
If he was born Penmaenmawr it would definitely be a Conway registration.
Gadget :)
-
Yep.... It certainly looks like it says penmaenmawr on his 1901 record, and my Dad it pretty sure they came from North Wales.
Do you know if there is a way to look at the proper certificate records, and not the index?
-
Hi
What was his age when he married in 1897 - he's 24 in 1901 so should be 20/21
No way to look at the certs - GRO have the monopoly
-
20yrs old. So have been searching a couple of years either side.
......contemplates hurting credit card in a bid to track the elusive one down!!
-
ok - last try - any Ellis witnesses on the marriage cert
-
nope. have tried spelling Ellis other ways to see if could find anything.
-
Have you checked the full GRO index rather than the partial one on FreeBMD? I'd do it but I think it would finish my eyes at the moment.
There's also on registered in Caernarvon in Dec Q 1877. Penmaenmawr might have been the first place he remembered :-\

Is the GRO one the one with ancestory when you pay? If so thats the one that i have.
Thanks for looking though. :)
-
It's there and on other sites. Make sure that you look at the full one not the partial one. Unfortunately that area isn't on the North Wales BMD yet, although I transcribed some of it a few years back :(

I think this will be the John Ellis death (hubby of Fanny) - not that it helps to establish whether he was David's father
Deaths Sep 1877
ELLIS John 34 Pwllheli 11b 292

Hi there,
I have 2 suggestions for you which may or may not help but are worth a try!
Go to the Penmaenmawr community website and go into the forum and ask your question. You may find that someone there has access to parish records.
www.penmaenmawr.com
or contact the Register office in Llandudno which covers the area. They are extremely helpful. Here is their page which explains what they can do for you, just click on the contact us to send your request.

Best of luck with your quest.

Very good ideas, Titch :)
I've tried Dafydd but no luck.
The only other thing that I can think of, and it always has to be a possibility - it's happened in my lines - is that David was being 'economical with the truth' :-\
Gadget
-
I quite agree Gadget, some of mine were indeed very economical with the truth!

By the look of your surnames and areas, we might even be related ;D

Thanks Titch, will give that a try.
-
Another thought. Have you tried searching under David ELIAS? Sometimes Welsh names became anglicized on the journey to England :)
-
Yep, tried that one. As well as various other ways of spelling Ellis, and spelling david the Welsh way.
Thanks for the thought though. :)
-
Got the birth cert today of the elusive David Ellis, its not him!! This one has his father down as william. Ho hum, back to the drawing board then!!
-
;D hurrah, found his death certificate. still as yet to find his birth certificate though.
