My great grandparents Robert and Mary Hughes worshipped at the Strand (2nd) Presp. Church in 1901 - can't find burials for either at church or at city cemetery. Anyone got information?
They lived at Spencer Road at time of 1901 census

Nellie, found your Robert Hughes on the Ulster Covenant web-site with the address as Olive Terrace as mentioned in your other posting. You say they attended Strand road Presbyterian Church,i wondered what you based this information on. The reason i ask is Robert signed the covenant at Glendermott Presbyterian church which is some way from Olive Terrace [but so is Strand road] and i wondered if they had started attending another church as there were closer sites to Spencer Road/Olive Tce to sign. If so there are two or three graveyards in the vacinity of Glendermott. In addition as other replies have stated they may have been buried further from the City, perhaps where they originally came from. Do you have the 1901/1911 census for them as it may give details of their place of birth.
My Great-grand Father was John Young McConnell [Young was his Mothers Maiden name]. His wife[nee Cowan] was buried in Leckpatrick burial ground which is in County Tyrone but close to where she was born, although they had lived in Londonderry for at least 30 Years.

Rob, thank you for this information. You are probably right in that they moved church. At the time of the 1901 census the family were at spencer road. I did trace the church records re the births of the children which were all for the Strand. They had moved to Olive Terrace before 1908. I just cannot trace marriage or birth cert for either Robert or Mary (Young) but will keep going. I know that Mary died in the Waterside area in 1925 and that her daughter Sarah signed the death cert - but no other details. I did visit the Glendermott graveyards when I visited Derry last year
and have also got strands that may link to Strabane. Need more visits to Ireland!
Genealogy is both frustrating and fascinating!
Good luck with your searches

Just a thought prompted by Rob's post. I assume the children born in Londonderry were in late 1870's / early 1880's. IGI have a Margaret Hughes born in County Tyrone in 1872 to a Robert Hughes and Mary Young. May not be connected, but is probably in right timescale for the other children. Could your Robert and Mary have moved to Londonderry from Tyrone as one of Rob's relatives did? Did they have a daughter Margaret?

I have come across this Robert hughes married to a Mary Young in strabane I believe and a daughter Margaret but at the time of the 1901 census there is no mention of a Margaret (who could have left home of course by then) all the other children where 1878 onwards in quick succession and have never been able to find a link so think they may be separate families

Hi some info, So far I have not located Olive Ter. in the 1911 Census. But in the Derry almanac in 1908 Robert Hughes live at 4 Olive Ter. But not in 1905 or 1909 (No. 3 Olive Ter was vacant in 1909) Will keep looking in the 1911 Census for Olive Ter. Olive Ter is located on Fountain Hill, off Spencer Rd.
