Ambrose also served in WW1 and a digital copy of his service record can also be downloaded. His raises a bit of a question however......

Cando....can we find a brother "Barney" for Ambrose and Lawrence?
Barnabas? Bernard?
.....dee

Dee perhaps an unregistered birth. They were married in 1887 but the first registered birth not until 1890?? The area they were living in was a mining area and they also appeared to move about a tad.

Really need to "chat" to Alison and ask her where she has the information on the family from.....and how sure she is about the wife of John being Maria.....as there may be more of the children in NSW....in particular Lawrence/Laurence. However, on his death his parents are given as John & Margaret, not John & Maria.....but we know that death records can be rather incorrect in that regard......
I have saved all the records in case......

In 1930 there is an Albert Joseph Halpin, Miner on the electoral roll - address is Harle St Abermaine - which seems to be the family address on war service records. He is the only Halpin at this location in 1930 - Is he the right generation?

Dee and Trish
Just found the Halpin tree on OneWorldTree on Ancestry, it will explain a few things, you might like to check it out to save you some trawling through the indexes.
Alison should be able to tell you whether or not she has a lot of this info already when she comes back on.
Cazay
-
Thanks Cazay.....so according to the OneWorldTree, Bernard Joseph Halpin was the earlier son of Patrick Halpin and Teresa Connelly.
So that will be brother Barney mentioned in the WW1 record of Lawrence Ambrose/Andrew Halpin.

I've never read/taken infor from ancestry trees - is it real or someone's best guess? Do we have an "earlier son" without a birth record? Death record?

Alison,
you asked who Ambrose is......Ambrose is the son of Patrick and Teresa .....see message #2 of this thread for his birth as Patrick A Halpin and Message #7 for his death.
There were only two Halpin births registered at Greta, NSW .....Lawrence A Halpin and Patrick A Halpin. It was not uncommon for a child named after his father to go by his second given name, and Patrick junior must have done that, as the war record refers to him as Ambrose, and so do all the other records we found. I did notice on the OneWorldtree on Ancestry that he is named Patrick Andrew on there........but all the evidence we have found seems to suggest he was Patrick Ambrose.
You asked about seeing the war records......you will have to download them yourself from the website to the National Archives of Australia, that I posted in Message #9. Just click on the link in message #9, click on Recordsearch, choose to search as a guest, and then enter Halpin Ambrose (in that order) into the Search Engine.
When the result page opens, click Display and then you will get a summary page where it will name Barney Halpin (Bernard Joseph) as his brother. Click on the view digital copy link, and you will be able to see and save all the pages of his record.
Do the same to get Lawrence's record.
......dee
-
Hi Dee Thank you so much when i first went on Message 9# it was not linked to the website so i started to search for it and got no where fast.
But thank you for your help i hope you don't mind if i call on your help again i am trying to go through all of the messages 1 by 1 I recieved my original information about Patrick from Barbara leach.
Many Thanks again Alison :)

Hi there!
This is so funny! You should have asked me - I am the grandson of Laurence Ambrose Halpin, great-grandson of Bernard Joseph (Barney) Halpin, great-great grandson of Patrick Halpin, and great-great-great grandson of John Halpin!
I had done this research already tee hee but it was wonderful to see it all confirmed when I came upon it just now, several months after your hard work. Well done! I have some answers to your questions, as well as an extra mystery...
What happened to Patrick after he abandoned his family in 1901!?!?
Sean Halpin
