Hi,
I "think" I've just found my great grandmother, Ann Potter.
My previous information has her born at Tinhead near Bratton, near Westbury.
However, new, but albeit vague, information gives her birth at the local poor/workhouse.
Date of birth is around 1850; she died in 1941 aged 90.
Any information to put me on the right path, gratefully received.
Sincerest thanks, in advance.
Carol

Where did you 'find' her.
She is on the 1851 census age 2 months with a 29 year old Rachael Potter in the workhouse.
Is this the information you already have?
Tricia
-
By 1861 Rachael has married - do you have this information.
Tricia
-
Hi Tricia,
Many thanks. ;D ;D ;D
Didn't have her mother's christian name, just Ann Potter in the workhouse!!
If you could post Rachael's married name, even more ;D ;D ;D ;D!!
All this because of a family funeral earlier today. ::)
Trail had gone cold until then, so I'd been concentrating on my maternal grandmother's side. This is my maternal grandfather's side and it's been "quite" challenging, to say the least!!
Many, many thanks for your help; it's much appreciated.
Kindest regards,
Carol

Ok, hang on ;D

A very tangled web!! :o :o
But, the further back I go the more used to them I'm becoming!!
Tricia, you've been brilliant!! I'm really grateful for all your help. I can now email my 90 year old uncle and give him a few more details; he'll be stunned but not that stunned, I hope!! :P
As I said it all started with a funeral............... ;)
Cheers, for now,
Carol

I'll go back to 1841
What is difficult about this is that no relationships are given but all these Potters are recorded as being at the same residence
1841
Tinbury, Edington, Westbury Wilts
Robert Potter 60 Agric Lab
Rachel Potter 20
William Potter 16
Mary Potter 9 *
Robert Potter 30
Amelia Potter 30
Sarah Potter 6

Looks as though Robert is dad to Rachael William and Mary* and also to married son Robert ???
* see posting further down - think she is Robert's grandchild*

This is an extracted record form Parish registers
RACHEL POTTER
Christening: 26 MAR 1820 Edington, Wiltshire
Parents:
Father ROBERT POTTER
Mother ANN
So Rachael gave her daughters her mum's name

There is a death registration for a Ann Potter in 1840 in Westbury but doesn't give age at death. Think it must be her.
-
Robert Potter (Rachael's brother)
Marriage
Spouse: Amelia Oram
13 JUL 1835 Edington, Wiltshire, England
-
This looks as though it is the marriage of Rachael's parents. Another extraction from the parish registers
ROBERT POTTER:
Spouse: ANN FENNELL
Marriage: 15 AUG 1808 Edington, Wiltshire, England
-
Possible children of Robert and Ann Potter
James Potter 22 MAY 1809 Edington, Wiltshire
Ann Potter 01 JUN 1811 Edington, Wiltshire
Robert Potter 08 OCT 1813 Edington, Wiltshire
Jane Potter 07 JAN 1816 Edington, Wiltshire
Rachael Potter 26 MAR 1820 Edington, Wiltshire
William Potter 01 JUN 1823 Edington, Wiltshire
These are extracted records from the parish registers and are christening dates
Going back to the 1841 census I don't think Mary age 9 is the child of Robert
I did find a christening for a Mary Ann Potter 25 SEP 1831 Edington, Wiltshire with parents of James and Ann Potter so she must be Robert's grandchild

There is a death reference for a Robert Potter - again doesn't give age but if this is him it does explain why Rachael was in the workhouse in 1851 - poor soul

Hi Carol,
The following may be of some help, from the Edington Parish register..........
15 Aug 1808 confirm the marriage of Robert Potter and Ann Fennell, witnesses were Stephen Gordon and James Applegate. I looked for baptisms for Robert and Ann but could not find them in Edington.
Robert and Ann's children's baptisms in Edington, address Tinhead

Burials in Edington
13 Oct 1845 Robert Potter of Tinhead age 64

Did not find Rachel Potter's marriage in Edington, however, the following popped up in East Coulson.......
11 Jul 1848 marriage of Joshua Early, son of John Early and Jane Perrett, dau of Robert Perrett. Witnesses William Early and Elizabeth Perrett.
23 Sep 1854 burial of Ruth Early alias Hurley age 16 Months and 23 Nov 1854 Jane Early alias Hurley age 32.

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to thank all of you who have contributed my request for help tracing Ann(e) POTTER.
I should, and would, have replied before now; but, I've had a horrendous two months and just haven't had the time or inclination to venture on-line.
My uncle, my Mum's brother, sadly, passed away in early April. :(
This was followed, just a few days later, with my Dad being admitted to hospital with pneumonia. He was allowed home after five days but was re-admitted within a fortnight.
My Dad, passed away, peacefully, after a five week fight, on May 27th. :'( :'(
You've given me a huge amount of information to digest over the forthcoming weeks, and I, sincerely, thank you.
No doubt I'll be back 'pestering' you all for further details in the not too distant future.
Until then, thank you, once again, and take care.
Carol

As I said on the other thread - I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. :(
You really are having a rough time at the moment, Carol - take care of yourself
