I'm just curious to know if anyone else who has taken advantage of the free trial still has access? I've had it for over 3 weeks now, which is when I was expecting it to end .... and I have my fingers crossed that they haven't noticed that I'm still there! ;D
It has been SO valuable to me and I'd love to have a subscription - it's of far greater use to me than Ancestry or any of the other subscription sites.

Signed up around the same time as you and I'm still able to use it- some really fascinating things have turned up there.

I signed up two weeks ago.
Found the British Newspapers of great help due to a Greatx3
Uncle that I never knew had been married, and also the death of his
wife.

Which website is this found at?

I signed up about 3 weeks ago and can still get access. I found a court case where my great grandfather had 5 pairs of boots stolen from him and a murderer in my husbands family.

Hi,
I can't find the topic at the moment but I wanted to send my heartfelt thanks to the person who gave it to us. I have just found an absolute gem! I couldn't link the information I had about various Georges.
I now find out that George 'the jeweller' was at the Central Criminal Court in 1863 for being actively engaged for a number of years in making counterfeit coins 'of superior quality' and with another man, concerned in the robbery of Bank of England notepaper.
He was sentenced to be kept in penal servitude for 20 years!
What a little gem!!
Thanks again

I'm dragging this one up again because 3 months after I signed up for free trial access I've still got it - I've got so used to it now (I use it virtually every day) that I wouldn't know what to do without it .... I just didn't expect it to last this long!

I've just registered using my own name etc, with 'none' as institution and straight in.
It's got the Times digital archive, and loads more.
-
My access did eventually run out - I just went back to the invite page and registered again; same email, same details - it was fine, just started over again :D :D
-
I still have my free trial and I've found quite a few relatives!
-
I was able to access the great site at the start, but now it seems my access has been blocked. :'( I have tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer to no luck, it just doesn't load.

Well, I just got in no problem...but I'm like the dog who unexpectedly caught the car he was chasing...I don't know what to do with it. Where should I start?
Cheers,

Thank you for your help, Barbara. However, that link doesn't appear to work for me either. :( I will bookmark it though and hopefully I'll be able to access it soon.
Thanks again, :)

I just registered and it accepted me and I got in using IE. It looks fascinating so I've added it to my favourites.

I also had trouble getting into the database for a while but managed by going into 'history' then clicking on 'access.gale' and then double click on 'Gale-Instant Trial...' and signing in that way.

I can't get onto it it says server not found

I have found an article in The Times dated Wednesday 28th December 1864. It is a letter to the editor from Edward Sayell of Mentmore, Bucks. In the letter Edward Sayell refers to a' report in the paper dated 22nd Dec of a trail of Joseph Baker (incorrectly described as Baber)'
I cannot find this report can someone please look for me, afraid I'm not too cleaver at finding my way around this site?
Thanks

I get the page up inviting me to have a free trial, but I don't know what to put for "login" ???
Any suggestions?
I remember my password, but not login ........
-
Hi ruskie
When I initially registered, from the invitation page - I was immediately admitted.
did you get an email back from them after you registered?
I just did, which gave me the login and password (i imagine to use later when I return to the database on a new session)
Try virtual as the login
cheers

Oohh, yes, I probably did get an email from them .... I will see if I can find it. Thanks Ambly.
-
They gave me the login 'virtual' and the password 'books' (duh! ;D ;D) which I suspect is the same for everyone - then you just have to enter your email addy when you sign in
-
I ended up signing up again, and yes, those are the login and password words. Odd thing is though, I actually put my own password in, and it still worked :o

Mentmore
If you search for Joseph Baber on the 22 December 1864, you will get sent to page 11.
The item begins:
Joseph Baber was indicted for willfully setting fire to a stack of wheat, the property of James Roads, at Mentmore, on the 18th of September.
The article goes on at some length and ends:
The case was not finished at the time of despatching our parcel.
A search for Joseph Baker gives a hit on the 23 December 1864, page 10.
This gives the conclusion to the trial:
.............Not guilty.
If you still cannot get these two items, I can copy them and send them to you by e-mail. The files can be viewed using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Program.
