Title: Gregor McGregor
Post by: Annapet on Sunday 13 April 08 19:02 BST (UK)
I'm trying to find some information on Gregor McGregor who married Sarah Carmichael in Lismore, Argyle  I don't know the date of their marraige, all I have is that Gregor was born about 1764. I have a bit more on Sarah, her parent were Dougald Carmichael b 1733 and Janet Stewart b 1737 both in Lismore Argyle.
I have traced my family tree back to them but can't get any further, can anyone help?

Hi Billy I haven't tried contacting this group as I didn't know they existed, I plan to visit Lismore soon and  look for information in the parrish records if they exist. thank you very much for the info and I'll certainly have a look at the website address you gave me.
Do you have links with Lismore? what can you tell me about the Island?

Thanks again

It is just a small ferry trip from Oban you pass Lismore on the way to The isle of Mull.

The Past Clan chief of the McGregor Clan name is Gregor McGregor of McGregor!,kind regards ,Billy.

Hi Billy, I'm really looking forward to visiting Lismore this summer.
You said that the Past Clan chief of the McGregor clan was Gregor McGregor, that's amazing, do you think he may be my Gregor McGregor? That would be so cool, it makes me more determined to find out as much as I can, thanksfor the info
Anna

Hi Anna.Hope that your visit to Lismore was fruitful.
I don't have the marriage date of Gregor and Sally, but the first born son that I have is John b.20/7/1789.
My tree stems from Dugald MacGregor b c1757,m.Catherine McColl b c1761.
Children include John b 1792 m Catherine Buchanan b 1796.Both died Achuaran,Lismore.
Would be very interested in your tree and willing to share mine.Incidentally,I too have a Janet Stewart, but married to McPhail.

Hi Anna.I haven't a link from "my" Dougald to "your" Gregor as yet,but I'm still searching.I couldn't find any Marriages of Gregor MacGregor to Sarah Carmichael between 1750-1800 in Lismore OPR's,in Scotland's P. There's a chance that the marriage wasn't registered ,as was many the case pre 1855.Do you have a list of John McGregor's(b.20/7/1789) siblings? If my memory serves me,his brother Dougal b.1800 married Flora Ray and died in America.John also had brothers Malcolm b 1793 and John b 1806 as well as sisters Christian b 1795,Janet b.1797 and Mary b 1804.As I mentioned in my earlier post,I have a Janet Stewart b c1740 married Donald McPhail.Quite a co-incidence? I would have replied directly to your message, but I didn't see the option.Perhaps as I'm a new member,I'm unable to do so.
Regards,Jim

Hi there,
I think I may be descended from Gregor & Sarah's son Malcolm, born 1793 in Auchenduin, Lismore. If this is the correct Malcolm, he married Mary MacTavish, daughter of Duncan of Couranbeg,Craignish and settled in Eridine, then Durrin in Dalavich. In the 1841 Census he is living there as a Cotter with wife Mary and children GREGOR, MARY, DUNCAN, ALEXANDER and JOHN. Ten years later only Alexander and John are still there, now living with in-laws the Thomson/MacTavish family. Daughter Mary married Duncan McTavish in Lochgilphead and the family moved to Roseneath. Their daughter Mary married John Morrison. Their daughter Elizabeth married John Weir in West Maryston, and I am their g-grandson!
