Title: William & Ivor Beard MBE
Post by: Baytree on Friday 11 April 08 10:32 BST (UK)
Hi,

I have 2 brothers named William (Bill) b1906 and Ivor b1915 Beard, born Kings Norton, Birmingham.

Bill was in the National Fire Service in the City of Birmingham. Bill was largely responsible for the reorganisation in the West Midlands region.
He stayed with the fire service in Birmingham during the war.
In 1949 Bill was awarded the MBE in recognition of his work for the fire service.

His brother Ivor joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1937.
By the outset of the war he was a qualified pilot with many flying hours to his credit and was called up at once.
As the war progressed Ivor became part of the intensive Training  organisation based at the RAF Flying Training School at Sywell aerodrome in Northamptonshire.
Ivor taught British pilots as well as allied countries and Free French and Polish Forces.
In 1945 he received the MBE for his war service.

I would like to know who their parents were or any information about them.  ???

Regards
Dawn  :)

Hi Newfster,

That was quick.  Do you possibly have the fathers' name and a date of birth?

Thanks

whose father ?

You need to obtain that Marriage Cert to be bulletproof about earlier generations - and in fact, really you should get Bill or Ivors Birth Cert to be 100% certain of this.

Heres a likely candidate for the William E. Beard who married in the Kings N district in 1905 ..... again, you'd need the Marriage Cert to verify this entry ... but sadly his Father wasnt at home when the census was taken, so you'd need to look in 1891/81 too ...

Thanks Newfster,

I have possibly found Bill & Ivor's grandfather on the 1881 census - William Beard b1859 in Ireland.  So I shall have to look into that further.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I have the Beard's going back to c1664.  But I have conflicting notes on who the father and mother were for Bill and Ivor.  ???

If their father was William Edward Beard b1873, then he was the brother of my great grandmother.

His parents were William Beard b1845 and Emma Churm b1848.  But other information gives me William's wife as Mary b?.

Perhaps you could shed some light on this for me?

Regards Dawn

Hi Dawn,
According to my records Bill and Ivor's father was William Edward Beard (1881 - 1951) and their mother was Alice Elizabeth Hadley (1882 - 1952) They married in 1905.  William Edward's parents were William John Beard (1859 - ?) and Mary Langford and they married on 7 June 1880.
Does this help you?

Hi there

I know I'm rather late to this exchange ... I stumbled upon it as my father's cousins were William and Ivor Beard.

Alice Beard was the daughter of Thomas Smith (1857 - 1828).  Thomas Smith married Jane Whetton.

Anyone still following this thread?  I'm sure there is much more information to be uncovered.

Hello

I got a message from 'Stephanie' but I don't seem to have the ability to send PMs.  I think that perhaps I need to post a few more messages first.

Stephanie wrote that "I have their mother as Alice Elizabeth Hadley, daughter of Frank Hadley and Mary Ann Strickley"

However I definitely have a Mary Ann Hadley (d 1940 aged 87) in my family tree.   According to my information, her brother was George Strickley ... who had five children, one of whom was my grandmother.

I'm trying to put all the pieces together ... l check with my father as to exactly where Alice Beard fits in.
