Title: John Peake
Post by: garthur on Thursday 10 April 08 14:38 BST (UK)
Looking for any information relating to JOHN PEAKE (died 1780).  Grazier; residing in Barnwell, Northampton (details on Will).
Wife:  Susannah

Children:  (John); William; George; Ann; Elizabeth; Mary.

He also had estate in Middleton.

John (son) must have been a bit of a bad lot ~ the Will states:
"I give and bequeath unto my son John Peake, the sum of Ten Pounds to be paid to him by my son William Peake two years after my death upon the Terms, that is to (say) if my son John Peake makes no Dispute with my son William and my daughters, Mary, Elizabeth and Ann..."[/b]

We believe that John Peake (son) may have been dis-owned for gambling.  We know that my husband's family is directly related to this John

Any pointers, help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi garthur,
There is an advertisement, in the Northamptonshire Family History Society magazine, which I thought might be of interest to you. It has a project (in partnership with the Northamptonshire Records Office) -  a finding aid with over 993,000 names and contains baptisms, Marraiges, Burials, Militia Lists, Poor Law Records, Taxes, Licences, Quarter Sessions and Hospital Records, etc. (Fee per A4 printout: £1 members, £1.50 non members).
Email: angelascarsbrook [--at--] tiscali. co. uk   for details
It might also be worth your while to contact them to see if they have if they have anyone researching that family in the area - in their members' interest database.
Good luck!
Kind regards,
 Paulene :)

Fabulous!  Thank you!  I'll have a go ~ it's certainly worth it.  I've e-mailed Northampton CC as we know there is a bundle of papers of William Peake's (we think the same William as in the Will) that might shed some light.  It may be possible to access same through the site you have given.

Thanks again.  I'll let you know!

I am absolutely thrilled!  I am forwarding same to our cousins in Oz who have done an enormous amount of research from the other side of the world!

I think that I may have found the errant son, John Peake.  One of the same name was deported in 1791 on the Active ~ trying to work on that now!  Oz cousin sent transcript of Old Bailey trials....

Thanks again.  Oh, can you tell me if All Saints is the old churchyard?

Thanks

Hi garthur

Just sent you a P.M.

Barnwell has 2 areas.

To get to All Saints you have to go through Barnwell St Andrews where the main Church is.

I will send a photo of where the graves are to you.

This is fabulous!  I agree that the John Peake seems to be the same one, a copy of whose will we have, the dates, names etc., tally exactly.  The will is dated 1780.

William was the son mentioned in the Will, the one charged with setting everything to rights.

You cannot believe how excited I am at present!!

HI garthur

I rembered that my hubby and I went back to re-do some of the graves.

As I said one is totally un-readable and it looks like one has fallen down on to the back so also un-readable, that should add up your 8.

Will post a copy on the Northamptonshire Board so you can see and in case anyone else has taken the photographs earlier.

That would give the exact number mentioned in Fore & Aft (the book).  It also gives us a little bit more to go on, i.e. introduction of different names (e.g. Eland;)

David will be cock-a-hoop!  The other researcher has been doing it for even longer than David and has come up with a great deal of information (including the John Peake Will) ~ and all from Australia.  Puts me to shame!

Hi Garthur

Not sure about putting you to shame.  :)

By asking for help here at Rootschat you have been able to get photographs of the stones.

Unless the other reseacher came over from Aussie to Blighty he would still be wondering where they were.  :)

Will e-mail the extras ones in awhile.

The images were taken between August and September 2007 so should be in about the same condition.

But it's all down to you!  Many thanks for your help.  Just need to crack the link between John Peake the younger and Simon Peake, husband's 3 x grandfather...

I'm chuffed to bits.

Hi Garthur,

I am related to the Peake family through my Eland ancestors. My 5XG grandmother was Elizabeth Peake dau of William and Mary of Oundle. Elizabeth Peake married John Baker and their daughter Elizabeth married George Eland. It now gets complicated! George Eland and Elizabeth (nee Baker) had a son called Stephen Eaton Eland. Stephen Eaton Eland married Elizabeth Peake who was the daughter of William and Mary Peake of Barnwell! I notice from your postings that you have the will for John Peake of Barnwell. I cannot find this at Pro-online, I saw it mentioned on A2A as being dated 4 August 1780, where can I get a copy?. Would be happy to share information with you.

The will in question is actually a copy of the original that is with the Eddisford branch of the Peake family out in Australia!

The names are really confusing aren't they?

I've PM'd you with my e-mail address.  Feel free to contact me!

I am an Eland and I have Peake ancestors (from Cheshire) on my mother's side.  Is this just a co-incidence I wonder?
