Title: HOW DO I FIND COURT RECORDS - KIRKDALE PRISON
Post by: Mobo on Saturday 15 January 05 12:14 GMT (UK)
 :) :) :)

I have found, what looks like, an ancestor of mine - one Catherine Dunn age 17 of Wigan, residing in Kirkdale County Prison, Lancs, on the 1871 Census.

Are there searchable Court Records anywhere that I could look at, to see if this girl is my relative, and if so, what she was in prison for

Mobo that is a question a lot of us would love to know ;D
me included. I have searched for some time on the net using "Searching prison/inmates records" or the likes and so far have not found anything that actually tells me. :-
It is difficult because the court case could have taken place in another part of the country. Then imprisoned in Liverpool. Your best bet would be to contact a local government department of your choice.I would suggest writing to them as email's tend to get forgotten. It also gives that personnel touch. On finding the web Site below
I am not sure i would want to find any records though ???

County Archives often have Gaol Registers which give details of the prisoner's appearance, the crime he/she committed  and the sentence awarded.

Liverpool Records Office have records of the local and assize courts held in Liverpool.

The records give you the date of offence, arrest and court case (they are listed by date of court appearance NOT alphabetically) and verdict along with punishment.

Not sure if they hold the period you need.

Have you tried running her details through the gale newspaper site? You may get a report on her court appearance which would then give you the date the look at in the court records.

Good luck

MoBo Hasn't used the topic since Jan 2005   nearly 5 years ago and  is probably unaware of your post replies because it is so old ;D
I wonder if MObo ever found the records?
