Title: Kerry Place Name - Croyle
Post by: vanman on Monday 07 April 08 20:46 BST (UK)
Hi,

I am looking for the origins of the place name Croyle in Kerry, which I believe was in or around Tralee. It apparently does not exist anymore.
My 2 x great aunt has put Croyle as her birth place in the England 1871 Census. I have not been able to find Croyle on any maps or web sites or search engines. I have been told it  may have been written down incorrectly or phonetically by the enumerator at the time, if so that is going to be a big hinderence in finding the place. If anyone has any idea as to where this place is located it would give me a valuable starting point to trace my Irish ancestry.
Regards
Vanman

Hello vanman,

I've linked your  Cliffords with Upholsterers background  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,129988.msg1819139.html#msg1819139) thread to this one.

Hi Vanman, I am not sure if I can be of help but this may be of interest.  As you can see I am an 'Croyle' and have been tracing my husbands family tree back a while now.  We are from the Northumberland area of England and belive to have come over from Ireland at some point.  However, there is a very small village called Croyle Nr Tiverton in Devon.  We visited it an apart from a few houses there is a large house known as Croyle House and a few farms.

Hello Vanman,

The place name may be a misspelling of Carrigafoyle.

It has been quite a while since your first postin and I don't know if you have found Croyle. But I came across a mention to Croyle Hill in these newspaper cuttings about a Fr Casey priest in Abbeyfeale he died in 1907 or thereabouts and remembered your posting. It appears to be in the location you thought near Abbeyfeale.
This may give another clue to location. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/aai-files/assets/libraries/limerick-city-library/reading-room/sport/james-d-hartnett-part-1.pdf
