Title: ELDRED and KETTON / KIRTON families (Spalding/Moulton area)
Post by: Mitch65 on Monday 07 April 08 15:25 BST (UK)
Hello all

I'm looking for information on my great-great-great grandparents.  My GGG grandfather, William Eason Eldred, was born around 1812 in Spalding.  His marriage certificate states he was illegitimate, but I wonder whether Eason might have been the surname of his father as it's a rather unusual Christian name.

On 25/11/1846 he married Mary Ann Ketton (Kitton, Kellon or Kelton depending on your interpretation of the handwriting!)  Her father's name is given as Jacob and he was a labourer.  One of the witnesses was Louisa, who I presume was Mary Ann's sister or sister-in-law.

On my GG grandmother Elizabeth's birth certificate (14/12/1847), Mary Ann's maiden name is listed as Kirton.

Mary Ann died young, at 34, of bronchitis and premature labour.  The informant of the death was Elizabeth Kirton.  She was buried on 19 March 1857 in Moulton All Saints.  Her husband William lived to the ripe old age of 74 and is also buried in Moulton All Saints.

I'd be grateful for any help you could give me to figure out the proper maiden name for Mary Ann so I can trace her family.  I'd also be interested if anyone knows of an Eason family in the Spalding area.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Cat

Thanks for your reply.  If we assume that this is the same Elizabeth that was present at Mary Ann's death, it could be her mother.

Not for the first time am I wishing that the 1841 census gave us more information!! ;D

Just added to the previous post about Louisa too.

And further down the same page is a James Kirton 15 MS/Ag Lab Y in the house of Henry and Rhoda Foster (also farmers)

Possible brother of Louisa and Mary Ann?

Jonathon from 1841 seems to be a Ketton in 1851 servant age 15 b. Moulton in house of Thomas and Sarah Watts (farmer) HO107/2096 Folio 679 Page 11

But Jacob is a Kirton, age 18 Servant in husbandry Moulton in house of Robert and Susan Earl (farmer of 35 acres) HO107/2096 Folio 686 Page 25

Haven't found Elizabeth so maybe she'd died by then  :-\

Is this the William ELDRED aged 29 in 1851 .... Mary Ann's birthplace is given as Long Sutton.

Thanks Cat,  you've given me a lot to look into, although it looks like I may never know for certain the correct surname.

Hi GeoffE

The reference for the entrance in the 1851 census is HO107/2096, Folio 681, Page 15.

Other household members are:

William Eldred (aged 29, b Moulton)
Mary Ann Eldred (née Kirton) (aged 27, b Long Sutton - as you correctly identified!)
Elizabeth Eldred (aged 4, b Moulton - my GG grandmother)
William Eldred (aged 2, b Moulton)
Louisa Eldred (aged 10 months, b Moulton)

Michelle

PS: just seen your second posting - that looks like her!  You're a star!!!!   ;D

Long Sutton is about 5-7 miles away from Moulton and about twice as much from Spalding.  It's actually not that far away from the Norfolk border.

The Eldreds didn't stay in that part of the world - my grandmother was born in Algakirk, which is closer to Boston.

I have an ancestor who somehow appears as an ELDRED in 1841 on his marriage certificate but every other document (before or since) has the family as ELDING.

How bizarre!  Could just be that the registrar misinterpreted his name or your relative preferred Elding!  Mine remained as Eldred.

Hello Beckey

That's a great help, thank you.  I have a suspicion that I may never know for sure which is the right surname because they're obviously interchangeable, even by the people who are called by them!

I can feel a trip to the Lincoln Archives coming on the next time I'm in the UK.

Just wondering if your Spikins ancestors were from Spalding.

Hi there

Thanks for your reply.

From what I've been able to discover, my Spiking (Jane Spiking) was born in Revesby, although the location seems to change quite often!  They lived in the Horncastle / Toynton area.  She married into the Graves family.

Do  you have a Spiking or two as well?
