Has anyone come across the Wedderspoon (or similar spelling) family in the 1790s in Newcastle?
John Wedderspoon, mariner, poss. from Scotland m. Esther Allison in Bishopswearmouth, 1790.
dau. Mary b. 1791 Sunderland, m. John Urwin 1816
son John b. 1792 Sunderland, m. Margaret Gates(?) 1812
dau. Elizabeth b. 1797 Newcastle, m. Joseph Tate 1818
dau. Ann, b. 1800 Newcastle, m. Joseph Richardson 1818
All children were married in Newcastle.
Does anyone know anything about any of these people? It appears that these are the only Wedderspoons in Newcastle at this time.

Gareth,
I see you also posted this on the Durham and Scotland boards.
Hope you don't mind me suggesting that it might be a good idea to cross-reference them all to save duplicate replies/look ups etc.

That's a good idea Jennifer. Seems as though the other entries are already locked, so can't do much now. But if I have to post another general trawl for info, I'll cross-reference them myself.

There are a couple of christening records on SP but obviously cant link them to the Newcastle marriage
30/06/1760 WEDDERSPOON JOHN born to DAVID WEDDERSPOON at Fowlis Wester /PERTH
14/02/1773 WEDDERSPOON JOHN born to JAMES WEDDERSPOON and CATH. FOTHERINGHAM at Fowlis Wester /PERTH

If you can identify which church the baptisms took place in Newcastle then ask someone to check the original for the one in 1800. In that period the vicar should have named the parishes of birth for both parents (but they sometimes don't!)
Worth a try

I found the marriage between Mary Wedderspoon and John Urwin:
The marriage was in Newcastle All Saints and they were both "of this parish". The date was 28th Oct 1815, they both signed their names and the witness was Cuthbert Hutchinson.
I have been hoping John is my John Urwin. He and his wife Mary had four children, Esther 1819, presumably died, Esther again 1821, John 1824 and Thomas 1825. Mary died prior to 1837 when John married again (confusingly another Mary).
I have to admit that there were several John Urwins with wives called Mary around at the the time, but I have hooked onto Mary Wedderspoon because of the Esther name.....
Have you got any further with your research?

I'm finding the same baptism at St James Independent Chapel on Blackett Street in Newcastle-on-Tyne - same dates and the father marked as a brewer. [RG4 / Piece 3215 / Folio 74]
Could he have had an earlier marriage as there is a baptism for an Anne Wetherspoon in Sunderland Spring Garden Presbyterian on 12 Apr 1788 (dob 11 Mar 1788) to parents john Wetherspoon and Elizabeth Pierson
