Title: Miracle wanted!
Post by: alexena on Saturday 05 April 08 15:28 BST (UK)
This photo is in a dreadful state. Can anyone do anything with it. It was taken about 1897.

Hello Alexena,

Do you have all the seperate pieces ?

It looks like a mish mash of at least two different photos !    :o :o :o

Somebody has already had a go at it with a clone tool.
You need the original pieces to make any sense out of it as Jim said.

I think that one photo was stuck to the other.  Other than duplicating heads it will never be a complete photograph.  I have tried this and the result is not that great.  Three sets of twins.  You are alowed to laugh at my attempt..  ;D

Aaaw - you amputated the ear in the middle of the boys chest  ;D

Well done Charles - good attempt to make it respectable, sadly I don't think anyone is going to make a good job of this one unless we have all the pieces to put back in the right order.

I honestly don't know what happened to this photograph but I can see what you mean about it being in pieces and some boys missing. I only got a copy of it sent to me last week. I didn't think much could be done with it but it was worth a try. That is a very brave attempt Charles, full marks for trying, twins and all! I did say it would take a miracle. Thanks a lot anyway. I love the little darlings in the front row - on the left, the little one wearing what looks like a kilt, and on the right, the curly mop with the stripey pants  :D :-*

Anyway, I haven't done much with this but I did split it through the middle and pull it apart to where I think the two halves would have been originally - as you can see, there's a huge gap down the middle  :'(  Tidied up a little in top left corner, but don't have time to do more unfortunately.

Prue

Added:  actually, I think they probably need to be slightly further apart than this, looking at the alignments of shoulders and heads down the split  :-\

I think you are right Prue.

Two missing from both the top and middle rows and one from the bottom row.

Hello Prue,
I can see how the picture should have been. Jim & Jenny were of the same opinion as you it being torn right down the middle and put back together somehow. I imagine it must have been like this for some time but I will try and find out. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the clean up Jim. I found out today from the person who has the original photo, that it had been torn through the middle and crudely glued back but that was long before they got it. It is in rather a fragile state. Now I want to ask another favour. One of the boys in the class grew up to be the fellow sitting on the left of this next picture but I don't know which child it is. Any ideas?

Thank you both Jim & Jenny for restoring the second photo, they are really good. I have been studying and comparing the faces until I am just about cross-eyed and cannot decide which ones match up. The studio photo was taken in 1914 and the lads had just enlisted with the Lovat Scouts. They decided to have their photos taken so into the photographer shop they went, where they dressed up in these supposedly 'cowboy outfits' and that was the result!
