Trying to find details of Ann Buckingham, married John Snell in Linkinhorne 7 Nov 1814, died Mt Barker Springs, South Australia 28 May 1870, age recorded as 77.
We would like to find Ann Buckingham's details pre 1814 ie, Baptism; and also her parents/ancestors if possible.
This would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Jeenie. :) :) [we have checked for eg baptism in Linkinhorne, and other places, but can't find her] :( :'(

Hi Jeenie,
After all that praise I am sorry but I don't think I can help. I cant find her either :'(
I see she suggests she was born in Cornwall in the 1841 census and unfortunately wasn't there for the 1851 census. Arrived here with 3 children. I see they got around a bit - married in Linkinhorne where she doesn't list as of elsewhere at that time, children baptised in St Austell and St Ervan, in Bodmin by 1841, and then arrives in SA via Hobart in 1845. She seems to stick with Ann too - When I couldn't find an Ann, I wondered if it may have been something else such as Hannah, Nancy, Joanna, Susanna but it just isn't helping - there was a Joanna in St Clement, but no Nathaniel or Joanna among her children. The other thought is from that part of Cornwall perhaps she was born over the border.
I don't suppose there is anything helpful in BISA is there. I can't check that one............Kris :'(

Thanks for this help, Kris. :) (no matter how much one has done, there are always, usually, more ideas - which in hindsight one should have thought of ::) - when "talking" to some on else.)
I have quickly searched IGI on various years for Ann Brown, to find different variations of Ann, and checked these out, including nans, nanae etc, on cornwall-opc-database.org - but of course no result.
But two things you made me remember are : Apparently John and Ann had 2 children, Eliza Ann and Mary Ann in Devon (Wesleyan, Tavistock) in 1820 and 1824; and that we read somewhere that Counties in England were re-organized sometime in the last century - [but both of us being several generations descended and born in SA, genealogy research brings to light that we no longer have the inbuilt knowledge and understanding (absorbed by osmosis by the "Natives") of the English geography, and even culture.] :-[ So maybe she was born, over what is now the Border - but our own personal knowledge of such things is somewhat scanty - although genealogy research is somewhat good at rectifying such deficiencies !
Unfortuately BISA contains no relevant entry. :'( And unless subject to a complete mental block somewhere, we have tried all possibilities we can think of. :-\
But if nothing further, it must be accepted. :( Being of South Australian descent on most lines back to the introduction of record keeping, and being able to sometimes supplement with early English (and Scottish) censuses, and with the help of freeBDM, and RootsChatters, (and other sites such as freeREG and SP), have been able to trace most 4 x great grandparents, and then some. :D But, we are still very interested, and curious, about Ann ! and will keep looking. And she is buried just round the corner from a brother, too !
But again, thanks for the help.
Jeenie :) :)
sorry about all the facial expressions - just feel like it, in that sort of mood

Hi
On the 1841 there is this family
Bodmin
John Snell 50 miner copper mine
Ann Snell 45
Elizabeth 14
Susan 10
John 7

all born in county
their Christenings are on IGI along with that of John Buckingham Snell, 28 Dec 1817 , St Austell
do you think this could be Ann in 1841?

Hi Jeenie,
I am afraid these border parishes I am not very familiar with but as you say there does seem to be some confusion of what was in Cornwall and what was in Devon. Now you mention 2 children baptised in Devon. MMM Really makes me wonder if she may have been born North of the border. ::)
I know COCP covers a lot of parishes north of the border which were at times in Cornwall. I presume she was from up north somewhere for the marriage to have been in Linkinhorne. He was from St Austell and obviously initially took her back to his home parish to live, with the earlier baptisms being there.
Pity nothing of interest in the BISA. Although only submitted we do at times find something in it which helps break down a brick wall so I always like to check it.

Dear Deb and Kris :-[ First, I must apologize profusely !! :'(
I guess one could say that this is a continuation of previous posting, under Snell, refer 13 May 07 - with cross reference to this posting. I tried to make it clear, with the original wording of this posting, that I was looking for th origins of Ann (Buckingham) ie, that is was not necessary to look for her life post her 1814. But I was wrong. In genealogy you can't separate different periods of a life, you must look at it as a whole !
The census detail that Deb has kindly looked up is definitely for our John and Ann. (eg, he was a copper miner, and in the early days there were small mines in the vicinity of Mt Barker Springs where they are buried.) After investigation, it turns out that Edwin 4 was actually a grandson Edwin Saunders Snell, son of daughter Jane (a sister of John Buckingham Snell), and this Edwin also married in South Australia.
[To digress, briefly and to expand on what I wrote b4, from badly written census records it was eventually possible to identify a brick walled 2 x great grandmother, born c1831 and with help from freeBDM to obtain Birth Certificate for a younger brother, then death certificates for parents and their mothers, thus identifying their husbands, and from other Internet sites etc to identify the next higher generation.]
Which leads to another 2 x great grandmother - on whose son's 1865 Victorian (the Aus State of) birth certificate (which we are sure was only registered because he died aged 2 days), she is recorded as "24 born in Devonshire Cornwall". This was dismissed because the whole trail, the whole family, was full of misinformation, age, names, and places, and husbands and fathers (one child was born in "Kapunda in Adelaide Victoria"); but after a very tortuous investigation we eventually obtained her 1845 birth certificate - and when I recheck it, she was born in Linkinhorne !!
So it does appear we must needs concentrate some search in that area, and northwards. There were definitely some BUCKINGHAMs living in the area, and I have quickly rechecked www.lynherparishes.co.uk where there is eg an Elizabeth Buckingham baptized 24 February 1793, who matches beautifully - except for the name ! Is it possible that Ann could be Elizabeth ?? ???
Which all goes to prove that talking with others helps to clarify one's thoughts, and brings forth further ideas.
Jeenie. :) :)

Hi Jeenie,
I did have a bit of a look for Buckinghams also. Like you I think she was from up North - marrying in Linkinhorne she certainly was living there at the time. I noted that later generations to have children in linkinhorne were born in Tavistock and North Hill. On looking back further like you, I found 2 families having Children in Linkinhorne in the 1780s and 1790's I saw Elizabeth also but alas no Ann. Now these two couples Richard and Elizabeth, and Phillip and Thomasin were not married in Linkinhorne Phillip BUCKINGHAM = Thomasin TREGEAR 29 Nov 1784 North Hill and Richard BUCKINGHAM = Elizabeth TREGEAR 8 Aug 1791 North Hill so we are certainly in the same area. These two were born in North Hill. Phillip left a will.

Looks like an interesting document on their father also ::)

I'm sorry, Kris. Sometimes I have trouble opening a child proof jar - I don't know what I am doing, but no matter what, I can't get to view anything on the site you have provided ! Either I am missing something, or the computer is. (I do get in some places a message : 0 x 0004 too many records found.) But if it is a PC problem, then that's my problem !! [it appears from Multimap Tavistock is just over the border in Devon]
-
Sorry about this - somehow I managed to post the (substantially) same message twice. Could our Moderator delete one or the other - it doesn't matter which - and this message at the same time ?
I also got a computer produced message at the time of what I now realize was the 2nd posting, which I now interpret might mean that I lost an incoming message at that time.
But all a bit confuding. ???

Hi Jeenie,
No problem I deleted one
Will the search box work for you?
http://crocat.cornwall.gov.uk/DServe/searchpage.htm
I just typed in Buckingham
Here were the refs for Phillip (maybe the direct links to the articles may work for you)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/035f/
http://www.rootschat.com/links/035g/
More study required to work out if the Will is father or son.
Seems funny that we don't have many baptisms to either of these couples we know had children baptised in Linkinhorne. As you say Tavistock is not far away so maybe the answer is there. I am not at home Jeenie but just wondered if these chaps left wills it may leave a clue as to if there were other children
Copies can be ordered from the CRO by filling out the form ans mailing the appropriate fee

no matter what, I can't get to view anything on the site you have provided ! (I do get in some places a message : 0 x 0004 too many records found.)
And this threw me, because I thought it was trying to find the record, but there was some sort of computer glitch. ???
On re reading, the next day, I see my posting can be misconstrued. What I meant is I can get the Catalogue entries, but not the documents themselves; which is what I expected, from the site itself ie,
Viewing the results of a search
To view the full entry for any record, click on the green number to the left of the reference number.
Tree view of a collection
The tree view shows a whole collection in a nested structure.
To view the full entry for an individual item, click on the green number on the left.
Not all of the sections in the tree may be displayed at first. To view a hidden section, click on the + sign beside the reference number for the section you wish to view.
http://crocat.cornwall.gov.uk/DServe/HelpHome.htm
If "you" (3rd party) get up eg the catalogue entry for #78, for the Will of Philip Buckingham, and then click on AP/B/5115, one gets :
Overview of the collection.
Click on a number to view that record. Click on the '+' to expand the tree and see the hidden records or '~' to close a section of the tree.
0x0004 TOO MANY RECORDS FOUND. And I thought it was trying to disply the document, but couldn't.
But if you go back to Search the catalogue, and then enter RefNo AP/B/5115 you get a screen with a number 1 to the left of the reference number - as described in the Help pages. And it is here that I expected to see the actual document ! But I now realize that this is not what was meant at all - just my misinterpretation !
So this is a long winded way of saying I was at fault, and the reason for this entry is an explanation so others do not fall for the same mis-take !! :-[ :-[ >:( :'(

Just trying to look at all possible alternatives, could Ann have been the daughter of an unmarried mother, who then married a Buckingham, and Ann took this name ? ie, did this happen then ? (It seems to me, from other research, that back then people tended to keep their birth surnames.)
We note that from Ann's 28 May 1870 Death Certificate says age 77, (which possibly means 77th year), so, if correct, she was born in 1792 or 3, or 1794 - which "matches" the range from the 1841 census. These details were provided by the daughter-in-Law, not the son [John] (although there was probably no family difficulties (?) because they had 16 children from 1857 [another John], regularly, ranging from every 11 months to start until 21 months in 1881, when she died, of puerperal fever.)

Hi, Kris.
We have sent a request for the Will, as you suggested, and the other "interesting" document.
I contacted Lynda in Linkinhorne, who kindly rechecked the records, in particular if just possibly Elizabeth could have been Eliza Ann, but no luck. But she suggested who I could contact for North Hill.
So I contacted Gwyneth who has just advised a baptism for 24 Nov 1793 dau of John and Grace, Trebartha village. And IGI records go back even further. Hey Presto ! :D
Thanks ever so much for your help - this posting can now be considered * Completed *
Jeenie. :) :)

Hi Jeenie,
What great news. You must be thrilled. ;D I am really pleased for you.....Kris :)
