Title: LANGFORD
Post by: collinscarnegie on Tuesday 01 April 08 11:37 BST (UK)
Hi all,
I am hoping for leads on the LANGFORD family.
John Langford(c1800-1860) was born Ballyhupahaun  He married a Sarah Curtis(c1808-1895). Children were John, William, Ann and Jane.
William (b Drummond 1839 d Brunswick Victoria 1912) married 1864 Wesleyan Chapel, Charleston Rd, Dublin, Ireland to  Louisa Sinclair Jones (b 1839 Dublin died 1915 Melbourne Victoria). [source: family history document]. I note a William and Louisa and 4 children were present on the  'Western Empire' which  arrived Melbourne September 1871 [Victorian PRO]

My family history document says: "They lived at Drummond, Ireland and their graves are in the Churchyard of St Brigids Church at Rosenallis..... The land they farmed has changed hands several times but as far as I know is still known as "Langford's field" at Rosenallis. There are several tablets and a window in the church to the memory of departed Langfords."

I would be grateful if anyone has leads on this family

Best wishes to all
Stuart

Welcome to Rootschat.
Since the dates you need are before civil registration in Ireland you need to search for church records (if they still exist). To do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived and then start looking. Have you tried searching the LDS catalogue (www.familysearch.org) in case they have microfilmed the records you need?

Unfortunately I can't find anything on the LDS catalog for Laois that might help- no church records, no probate, no tax

Hi Stuart. 1849 Isaac Langford had property at Avoley and Cloonagh,Rosenalis and Thomas Langford in Drinagh,Rosenalis, all three townlands just west of Mountmellick. The townland of Drummond is slightly more North/West. Presently there are two Langfords listed in the phonebook within twelve miles of these townlands.Would attach  maps if I knew your e-mail addy.Regards Bill.

Thank you Jack,

Its good to see that Langfords were living in place, at least until recent decades.

I have since made contact with my fellow living Langford-descendants in other counties of Ireland, and their descendants in Australia and Canada.

Regards,
Stuart

Dear Stuart,
My grandmother was Sarah Jane Langford. She was born in 1873 in Clonasee and moved to Rosenallis. We visited St Brigid's church in Rosennallis in about 1997 with my 85 year old mother and we looked for the Langford tombstone. It was erected by John Langford of Drummond in memory of his beloved father John Langford who died October 20th aged 60 years his mother Sarah Langford who died 25th January 1895 aged 97 years. There were other Langford names on the stone which I wrote down.My mother remembered her mother talking abouta Sarah Langford who lived to 97 years old which must have been unusual in those times. I wondered if we are related in any way. We took a video of the tombstone.
best wishes
Jenny

Hi there,
My husband's great grandfather (on his mother's side) was the John Langford to which you refer.

My records show that John and Sarah had four children born in Ireland and five children born in Australia. My husband's mother is Laura Mabel 1875-1960.
Chn are:William James 1865-1901 Killed in the Boer War
Mary (Minnie) Louisa 1867-1926 married Rev Thomas Collins
John Arthur  1869-1930 married Ida Parke Little
Fredrick Sinclair Curtis 1871-1888
(at this point John and Sarah moved to Australia with their whole family and were very successful in business until the crash of the 1890s after which they moved to Beechworth in rural Victoria)
Chn born in Australia were:
Charles Albert 1874  Died in infancy
Mabel Laura 1875-1960
Ethol Gertrude 1878-1944

Hilda Francis 1883-1947
