Title: Hamusaud / Hamusand or similar - railway accident 1883
Post by: chris359 on Monday 31 March 08 23:25 BST (UK)
An English newspaper report of the death of Oliver DEATH states that it took place in a railway accident on 14th Sept 1883 in British Columbia, in a place that looks like Hamusaud or Hamusand. I can't find such a place. Please could anyone help?

Many thanks, Chris

Hi Chris

I think - he died at Maple Ridge - aged 50

But his death has been indexed as HEATH

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple_Ridge,_British_Columbia

There were a lot of Finnish families in this area - and the name of the place you mention 'looks' very Finnish to me.....

Cheers

Hi again

Having said that -- I wonder actually, if the precise place is "Hammond" - which is within the Maple Ridge Area (Which is in the Fraser Valley, New Westminster area - I think!)

Search for "Maple Ridge" here:

http://ilmbwww.gov.bc.ca/bcnames/g2_search_by_name.htm

Then, bring all the places up within a 5km radius : Hammond stands out - it's listed as a Station , and bringing it up further, it's listed as a Railway Station and Post office! Looks likely to me  ;D Maple Ridge was probably it's administrative town - causing the death to be registered there.

Maple Ridge Cemetery transcriptions here - but can't see him:

Yes there was a route from Ruskin to Hammond, well done! ( in the Maple Ridge area)

His life must have been the single life lost that day, as if you put in maple ridge &
1883 alone... there is the information for Oliver Heath.

He isn't shown as Death or Heath in here, either ( cemetery Transcripts).....

Perhaps if you modify to put -  B.C. death  lookup - in the subject line someone there might give the above entry a look...

If you have an idea when he immigrated, you can search for the manifest at the National Archives Canada. They aren't indexed, so you have to search manually.

Chris - are you looking for more information on Oliver or just details on the location of the accident?  I can look up Oliver's death registration if it would help.  Just want to know if you need it or not.

Regards,
Lynwen
