Hi, Could somebody please lookup the name John Brodie Reavil in the Parish records for Thakeham.
John was born in 1834 and we have his parents listed as William and Margaret Reavil but cannot find out any further information about them.
Any information, particularly about where his family originated from, would be extremely usefull.
Many thanks in advance.....Andy

Andy, I tried to do a look-up on the Sussex marriage Index, and it tells me there are none for the name REAVIL. I tried wildcards, but cannot get close to the name. I found this puzzling...any ideas? Have you got the name right?

Many thanks for looking through the marriage indexes. I cannot be sure if any Reavils were married there but Thakeham was listed as John Brody Reavils place of birth on the 1891 Census.

Andy have you got your Johns parents anywhere in any of the census - I ask because I had a look at your chap in 1871 81 91 and 1901 and it's only the 1891 Census that he gives Thakeham as his place of birth - very odd !
Other than that he is in London area and giving Camberwell as his POB.
-
I know its a strange one.....I cannot find him in Camberwell either and the only link I have is that his wedding certificate names William Reavil as his father. I have done an IGI search and there was a William Reavil married to a Margaret Brodie (Johns middle name) in 1815 (In Devon) which would leave me to believe that these could be his parents.
On further investigation I did find some Reavils born in Thakeham around 1850 (Elizabeth, Frances and William) and considered that there might be a family connection with this town.
Anyway thanks for your interest and if you find anything else, please let me know.

Hi Andy,
Looks like your REAVIL'S were not a Sussex family. The marriage index goes up to about 1837, so you might like to use that information, although negative, as a good indication that they were not from Sussex. It also looks like they moved around a lot ::)
an unenviable task for a researcher :(

Hi Everybody,
We have some new information on the Reavil family because we have found them in 1851 in the Thakeham Union Workhouse. Margaret Reavil is listed as being the Matron and is shon as a widow with two children Margaret (14) and Lydia (12).
I cannot find any trace of William Reavil or John Reavil in the 1851 Census but there was a William Reavil who died in 1845 at Thakeham.
If anyone has the 1841 Census for Thakeham (or surrounding areas) could they see if the family was there for when the Workhouse started up in 1836.
Thank you

I have a lot of background informaion on the Reavil family shown in Thakeham in 1851 census and am happy to share such data with descendants.

Andy,
This might be some help - Storrington is very close to Thakeham.
Storrington baptisms:
14/08/1836 Margaret Maria REAVIL, d. of William & Margaret REAVIL. Occupation: Master of Thakeham Union
18/11/1838 Lydia Diana REAVIL, d. of William & Margaret REAVIL. Occupation: Governor of Workhouse
Storrington burial:
28/02/1853 George REVELL, age 34, Master of Thakeham Union
Seems like being Thakeham Workhouse master ran in the family.
I can't find the name in the Storrington Marriage & Banns registers; I don't have access to Thakeham registers.
HTH,
