Title: south africa
Post by: matchis on Friday 28 March 08 08:41 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have experience of researching immigrants to South Africa?

I have relatives - two brothers named Rodney Y Chisholm and Alastair C Chisholm - who were born there ( Pietermaritzburg I think) to Scottish immigrant parents Alexander Chisholm and Jessie Young. The brothers were born in the early 1900s. They came back to Scotland with their parents in the 1920s and lived near Glasgow until 1936 or thereabouts. Their father died in Glasgow in 1933 and I believe they returned to South Africa sometime after 1936. Their mother  went to live in East Sheen, London, after being widowed. There is no trace of her death in either English or Scottish records so she may have returned to Natal also. Ships' passenger lists have not provided any clues.
