Title: Looking for Mary Ann Smith
Post by: tempsford on Thursday 27 March 08 16:43 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Rather a tall order but I'm looking for the baptism for Mary Ann Smith. She was born about 1800 in Chatham.
Mary moved to Cambridgeshire and married James Saunders in 1820 at Trumpington.
I realise the Smith name is a difficult one to research but I live in hope! ;D

The trouble with searching for SMITHS, especially with common christian name, is that it's difficult to be sure you've found the correct one.

The baptisms for St Mary's, Chatham are online:

There are some (female) Chatham baptisms on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org with batch number C021788 though I'm not sure how complete they are and they appear to stop at 1800.

You will also need to bear in mind that Chatham/Gillingham was a naval and army base so there was quite a transient population at times.  Gillingham, and perhaps even Rochester, will need to be checked too.  Sorry :'(

Hi bearkat and casalguidi
Thanks for the replies.
I have looked on the IGI but without success.
I think its probably looking for a needle in a haystack but the records online look promising. ;D

Tempsford, are the witnesses to her marriage any help - just wondering if she was born in Chatham but her parents were from and returned to Trumpington :-\

Hi Casalguidi,
No I don't have the witnesses to James and Mary Anns marriage. Actually my mistake they married in St Giles Cambridge and settled in Trumpington.
I didn't realise Chatham baptisms are on line so after I have searched them I'll let you know if I find anything! ;D

Hi,
I've searched the baptism registers for Chatham and the only Mary Ann Smith was baptised in 1794.
This looks promising. ;D

Hi Casalguidi,

Hi,
I've just found a marriage in Chatham for a Mary Ann Smith in 1813. I would think that this is the Mary Ann baptised in 1794 :(
Back to the drawing board!

I don't have baptism information for Mary Ann Smith but I am interested in your relationship with her. Mary Ann and James Saunders are my GGG Grandparents.

Hi,
James and Mary Ann were my 4x gt grandparents. I am descended through their daughter Hannah who married Robert Poulter.

Hannah's older brother William is my GG Grandfather.

Doesn't that make us 6th cousins or something? I'm sorry but I'm new to this whole genealogy thing!

So,  I received your personal message but am still trying to figure out how to reply to it..!

So I have the parish record summaries  for Cambridgeshire and they show 5 Sarah Charter (s) born respectively in Steeple Morden:

1784
1785
1807
1848
1849  a Sarah Ann
1871 a Sarah Jane

Do you have a date range but with these dates now you may be able to narrow down your search. let me know if this helps.

mcharter, I think you need to post three times on the boards  before your Rootschat personal message system is full activate thus allowing you to send and receive messages to/from other members.

Just reply to this post and that should do it.

The witnesses at the St. Giles marriage 10 May 1820 of Mary Ann Smith and James Sanders (BT Sandres) were Mary OLIVE and William HOWELL.

James was of Trumpington and Mary otp (St. Giles).

So I don't expect the names of the witnesses will be any help.
