Whilst researching my AMERIDITH ancestors in Devon I came across one (Judith) who appears to have been born "in of Ashley Castle, Cheshire" according to the Visitations of the County of Devon.
I don't know of any Ashley Castle in Cheshire and wonder if any other Rootschatters can point me in the right direction please?
-
I should have added that Judith AMERIDITH was born in 1579. ;)
Thanks

Hello Kelly,
There's an Ashley Castle five miles west of Winchester. www.ecastles.co.uk/ashley.htm
I'm not certain what's at Ashley, Altrincham, Cheshire. I wonder if it should be Ashley Hall rather than Castle www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=50764#s9

Many thanks for that information, Christopher. I will look into both those areas.

Hi Kelly
When I was a child I used to go to Castle Mill, Ashley where there was an open air swimming pool. I've found a website that is quite interesting, Trafford Community Archive:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/033e/
I hope that works, as the original link was too long, so I've "shrunk" it.
Apparently there was a house there which was demolished in 1954 and a modern house has now been built. Unfortunately, the archives don't go back further than the 1700s, but it is possible that there was a "castle" or a house known as a "castle" on the site in earlier times.

Thanks, Lizzie. I will look at that also.

Hello Kelly
As the others have already indicated there is a location called Castle Mill in Ashley in Cheshire. Very close to Casrle Mill - there was a Mill there - there is a Castle Hill Farm.
A dew years ago now I belonged to an archaeology group. It was suggested that we ought to have a look at a particular location near to the Farm on the height above it. Your relative would appear to be related to the 'castle' - what ever the structure then - in the sixteenth century. when something may well have been standing.
I was led to believe that the University of Manchester archaeologists (GMAU) may have had an interest.
If you try this map site http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/
Use Place Search to go to Ashley, (parsih of Bowdon). This will hive you all the Plots in Ashley. If you go to Plots 216 or 217 you should find thereabouts Castle Hill Farm. If you use Twin Maps and look also at say the 1910 map you should
be able to relate it to where it is in Cheshire,
My apologies if you have already done that :)
Best wishes

No, I haven't already done that, thank you very much Reiver - I will certainly take a look. :)

As a lad, I too, splashed around in the pre-war Castle Mills swimming pool in fact it was in their filtered River Bollin water I threw off my water wings.
A close relation William Crosby b1832- farmed 50 acres at Castle Hill Farm (Ref: 1861 census.)
May I thank all other writers who have so kindly taken their time to reply
I am now encourage into further FH research.
Ray Crosby.

Welcome to ROOTSCHAT, Hermanside. Hope we can help you in the same way that you are helping Kelly :) An excellent idea to contact HCS.
I was involved earlier in the thread and so was reminded as a consequence of your posting. Your mention of Ashley Hall and also Christopher's mention earlier and the name MEREDITH mentioned by Kelly in her first post rang bells :)
Kelly
There was a family called MEREDITH who owned Ashley Hall in the early 17th century. My source is a book entitled Timperleie; The History and Archaeology of Timperley Old Hall edited by Pat Faulkner and published by the South Trafford Archaeological Group. The ownership of Timperley Hall and Ashley Hall were linked. The Archaeological Groups website is at
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bryan.burtonbj/
They have copies for sale and/or a question may elicit more information from the Editor who is a member.
You first mentioned the name AMERIDITH. The name I see mentioned in the book is Sir Amos Meredith.

In 1664 Anne Tatton married Sir Amos Meredith of Ashley at Bowdon Parish Church

Many thanks to you both, Hermanside and Reiver. I will follow up the links that you mention. :)

Sorry to interrupt.
I too used to splash around at Castle Mill baths when I was a child. We used to cycle from Wilmslow (Fulshaw) and take picnics.
Oh happy days. ;D I wonder if we were all there together and never knew it :D

I found quite a lot about Ashley Hall (not Castle), which existed in the village of Ashley near Altrincham in Cheshire. The Merediths (once called Ameredith, originating from a Welsh name) owned it for many generations, eventually marrying into the famous Tatton family (owners of Tatton Hall) in the 1800s. At that time Ashley Hall went to the Egertons (owners of Tatton) as part of the marriage dowry.
Ashley Hall was quite a significant place, a lot of history to do with it especially when various characters used it as a meeting place to decide which side to go on at the beginning of the Jacobite Wars.
Unfortunately it was demolished in 1954. I'm afraid I don't know why, and I'm trying to find out. Since then other more modern buildings have been built on the site, which is a great shame as the old house was a fine old part timber framed building. There are still various bits of the estate left.
I also found a complete family tree of the Merediths online, which I have and can attach for you
Quite an illustrious family tree and lineage, I must say, - going back as related to Edward Seymore himself, no less!
I've only posted 2 of 3 of the images I found of this family tree. There is a 3rd which may be the one that includes your Judith, I will check later. I did notice her on the tree.
Hope this answers your questions.

Ah, here below is the last part of that family tree I found of the Merediths originally of Ashley Hall.
You may also be interested to know there is a ghost story associated with the Merediths and Ashley Hall. The whole tale ( a true account by a friend of the Merediths) is told in a book by Aiden Chambers entitled "More Haunted Houses" published by Piccolo. It is also due to be recited in a podcast at the end of February on a website called www.ghostpod.co.uk & will be on the 4th or 5th Podcast. The Hall is discussed in some detail there, and you can get an idea of its past times.

Hi Lizlen
Thank you so much for all the information, for the family tree, the details about the podcast and the book - that is absolutely brilliant! :)
I have rather left any further research on the Meredith family on the backburner for a while whilst I researched Judith Ameredith's husband's family, the Godolphins. You have awakened my curiosity again and I look forward to researching Ashley Hall and the Merediths for some time to come.
Thank you again
Dorothy

You are more than welcome. It was a coincidence I was researching the Hall and Merediths and came across this thread in the search.
I'm afraid the family tree may be a little confusing, as it is a cut and paste of 3 different screen captures I did. Some of it will be duplicated, so you should be able to work out those and join it together properly from there. Should make sense then. I do notice your Judith and Godolphin are both there. Fascinating that your ancestors consists of the Lords of Berry Pomeroy (the famous Seymours) and Thomas Moore, among many others.
-
Thanks again, LizLen for your help :)
As you say, this twig of my tree is quite an illustrious one! The Godolphin family that Judith Ameredith married into also boasts some famous ancestors right back to William the Conqueror.
This branch of my tree is through my paternal grandmother and my father, who died early on during my family history research - before I was able to tell him that his grandmother hailed not from Ireland as he had assumed, but from Devon & Cornwall would have been quite amused I think!
Best wishes

Hi Kelly, I was in the middle of looking for info on Castle mills where I used to go when I was a kid & wanted to know if there was a Castle at some time around Castle Mills.
Google (Ashley Castle, Cheshire), click on sixth item down where it says (The Baronetage of England) Volume 3 by Thomas Wotton, Edward Kimber, Richard A. Johnson. There you will find info on the Ameredith family you are looking for.
Created Barqnet, Jan 2nd 1639.
Hope this is of some help to you,
best regards,
spatts.
