Title: St Gabriels Canning Town
Post by: mazwad on Wednesday 26 March 08 23:28 GMT (UK)
No photo just a query in case any of you happen to have seen a photo of this church. I  have been told by a cousin researching that none exist.  I find that hard to believe as surely people had wedding photos with it in the background hence my query on this board.

It wasn't demolished until about 1940.

Mazwad.

I live in the borough and will call into the library tomorrow to see if they have any pictures of this church.

Many thanks I would appreciate that, you are very kind to take the trouble.  I could kick myself as I  had a day trip last week to Stratford library and I think maybe I would have found it there.

I can't find any pics but there is a book of archive photos of Canning town by Bloch & Harris. You may be able to get it from your local library

Canning Town (Archive Photographs) (Paperback)
by Howard Bloch (Author), Nick Harris (Author)

For information

The church of ST. GABRIEL, Canning Town, Wellington Street, originated about 1868. A map of that year shows an unnamed iron church between the river Lea and the railway, just north of Barking Road, in the position later occupied by St. Gabriel's. (fn. 170) A brick building was consecrated in 1876. (fn. 171) St. Gabriel's was at first a mission of West Ham, but in 1879 a separate parish was formed from parts of West Ham, St. Mary's, and St. Andrew's. The advowson of the vicarage, originally vested in the bishop, was in 1886 transferred to the Lord Chancellor, so that the benefice could be augmented from the revenues of All Hallows, London Wall. (fn. 172) In 1884 services were started in Hermit Road, where an iron church was erected in 1896. Another mission was started in Clifton Road, where the church of ST. FAITH was built in 1891–2. A third mission, in Grange Road, was opened in 1891. Of these only St. Faith's appears to have remained in use by the 1920s. (fn. 173) St. Gabriel's itself was damaged during the Second World War, and was demolished about 1955. In 1961 part of the parish was merged in that of St. Matthias, the remainder going to St. Luke.

Thanks Harry I would appreciate that.  As I said before I did visit Stratford library last week but wasn't looking for it then.  I was following up on some baptisms and had a lot of help from two lovely ladies in the archive department.

They helped me fnd my dads christening in St Andrews church records, the name I was looking for was Claridge, so if you know the ladies there please tell them how much I appreciated their help.

Thanks also to Kesannah who went looking for me.

After years of searching I have found an original postcard of st Gabriel, the collector charged me a fair bit but it was well worth it most of my family lived ,married and died in and around the church

Wow! You actually have a photo of St Gabriel's? Our family used that church a lot and we've been searching for a photo for years but to no avail. Any chance you could share it, either here or privately? I do have an aerial view to share, although it is obscured by trees. It shows the surrounding area after bombing and was taken not long before it was demolished.
