I'm looking for the family of Edward Fanthorpe 1837 Hallington.
Wife Mary was a widow in 1881 census and living in Fulstow. I was told his wife was Jane.
All children were born in Fulstow except one who was born in Manchester.
Kind regards
Dave

Edward FANTHORPE was buried 24 March 1881 (just a few days before the census) at Fulstow, aged 44.

Hi Dave
Had a look through the Fulstow census sheets and they aint on that ???.

Not to worry. It's possible they were in Chorlton. Manchester as James was born there in 1862. Jesse was supposed to have been born 1861 in Fulstow 1861 but can't find him on the BMD even with phonetic surname on.
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave
I tried to find Jesse's birth, and could find no record of it, even doing soundtex ???

I think there is great caution needed here.
Edward later has a "wife" called Mary but he seems to have married Jane ROBINSON.
There was a son called Jesse but his birth reg doesn't exist as FANTHORPE.
What if Ed's marriage broke up and he just lived with Mary (who earlier had a son called Jesse)?
On the other hand, there was a Mary ROBINSON born c1840 Fulstow.
-
Maybe she was christened Mary Jane or Jane Mary and couldn't decide whether to use Mary or Jane, who knows.
If we could find the family in 1861 it might help. There was no death of a Jane Fanthorpe followed by another Edward marriage in Lincs or Lancs. There was another Edward marriage in 1870 but that was to a woman named Frances.

Yes, I saw him in 1861 aged 15, clearly a different bloke.
I can't find a suitable person at East or West Allington in 1841 (or a baptism), no FANTHORP marriage at Allington.
I can see Mary ROBINSON 2 in Fulstow in 1841, dau of James and Elizabeth, the baptism is in the IGI. She is a servant aged 11 in 1851.

If you go to this site
www.lineagelincs.com or contact Jean Fanthorpe on lineage.lins@ntlworld.com
They are a wealth of knowledge on the Family, a few years ago the Fanthorpe clan had a reunion in Fulstow and they had a walk around the village looking at places the relatives had lived.

Hi there
I have been researching his brother Jesse, born 1842 at Hallington. Have a reasonable amount of information about him (he emigrated to Australia in 1864), his brother James (emigrated to New Zealand) and Charles. Let me know if you are interested.
Cheers

Hi Mark
Thanks for the offer. I'll take anything you have on the Fanthorpes please. I have a two or three others that would be glad of the info, if that's ok with you.
Much obliged

Hi Dave
I became interested in Edward's brother Jesse (bp 22 May 1842) as he emigrated to South Australia onboard the 'Tarquin' in 1864. He lived in Naracoorte for some years before his accidental horse and buggy death in July 1872. I have probate, inquest and other docs on him. His brother James emigrated with his family to NZ in 1874 or 1875, his daughter Rose Ann eventually emigrating to Sydney, NSW with her husband Angus Cameron. Together they ran a pub there. Angus died in 1912 and Rose in 1918. Edward's brother Charles is listed as coming to Australia onboard the 'Melanope' in 1878. I have found nothing further on him.
There is probably too much information to post on a Chat Forum. If you give me an email I will contact you.
Cheers

HELLLOOOOO???? *listens for an echo*. I have started researching my sons family tree and the Fanthorpe family you are discussing is his mother's father's side. James who went to NZ is the ancestor. I have Jame's father's name but not his mother's maiden name. If you are out there I would definitely appreciate any further information you have regarding either the ancestors or the descendants of the above Fanthorpes.

There had obviously been a remarriage. This is the sum total of my Fanthorpe information except that the ONS website "Surnames of England and Wales" has 398 instances of the surname in 2002 placing it 13434= in frequency. As recently as 2007 there were bearers of the surname in Doncaster.

yes thank you the names are right at first glance, will go investigate. someone put me onto the right people just now and I have jumped back like six generations almost instantly!
-
okay, I have unconfirmed names, dates and places for the ancestors on the fanthorpe side going back seven generations of the above fanthorpe brothers (jesse, charles, edward, james) shout out if you interested

The Fanthorpes are on the edge of my research, so I shall just keep an eye on this thread to see if there are any developments affecting me. A few years ago Doncaster FHS had a talk by an archivist from Lincolnshire Archives on this subject, it concerned inter relationship in 19th century and earlier Lincolnshire villages. My family (Luffman) had only been in the county around thirty years in the earlier 19th century, and yet they were already related to two lines in these massive trees, including the Fanthorpes as mentioned earlier.

Hi Kiwihunter...hopefully you get this.
James' mother was Mary Smith according to my records...father's name Charles.

hmmmm. I have her down as one Mary Brumpton. Damn it. Will have to have a closer look at this when I get a couple of hours to spare. Thx for the warning.
