Does anyone have any info on the Grealy's from Claregalway,I know there are five listed on the Griffiths Valuation.I would be grateful for any info on Grealy/Greally of Claregalway.Thank you.

Hi,
The book I have just described in my posting on schools in Claregalway also gives names of families in the townlands as of 1855. Grealy occurs in Gortadooey ( 108 people in 15 houses ), Gortcloonmoore as Greally ( 64 people in 13 houses ), Kiltrogue as Greaney ( could be a derivation of the others?).

Hi,
Just trawling though some of the names in school records for Greally. In February of 1921 a Kathleen Greally daughter of a farmer from Cloonbiggen attended school in Claregalway National school for girls. Nelly Greally starts on23.12.23 and Sara Greally starts on 22.12.23 I would presume these are Kathleens sister ( twins?) as they are both from the same place. A Maria Greally from Gortgloonmore starts on 23.12.22.
Do you have any names from this period?

Wouldn't it be great if there was some pictures of Grealys/Greallys in it,I know I will have to get both books.Once again thank you.

Hi,
Do you know any of the Grealy children's names? The book goes as far as 1990 with the names of children attending school in Claregalway.
Brian

Most of the Greally/Grealy name I have found would have been children in early 1800s & late 1800s.But on thinking on how Irish family's often followed a naming pattern some will have named the next generation after parents & grandparents a few names that are repeated on my lists are Honer,Peter,William,James,Michael,Dermott,Mary & Sabina.I am also interested in Greallys from Annaghdown & Gort

I will check the book when I have some time and see if there are any earlier references to your Grealy.

Ah cheers Brian,is there pictures of people & the area in the book?

Hi,
There are a number of photo's in the book mainly from the turn of the century and also photo's of prominent buildings etc. I was fortunate to meet the author on a visit to Claregalway and he has recorded all of the burials locally,

Ah Brian that sounds brilliant (I have contacted the history group & hope to get a copy)Also I am planing a trip in June to visit this area, I am really looking forward to it, as all of a sudden I have found a lot of info that will give me a sense of connection with this area.+ I can not wait to get my hands on the book.

Try the parish church. They were very helpful to me. When I visited there was noone at home, so I sent a letter and they trawled through the parish records for me for births marriages and deaths. You could get lucky as most were catholics at this time and they have the records.

Thank you Brian for that info,I must pick your brains once more, on your travels to this area did you visit a area called Annaghdown ? this place is of great interest to me for a number of reasons, one of the bonus is that I now know the Greallys of Annaghdown & Claregalway are related, if you have anymore tips do let me know.By the way I have not heard back about the book yet, be its early days so fingers crossed. Also I have not been to this area before so all tips are welcome,Cheers Nipy

Hi Nipy,
Have visited Claregalway 3 times since I found my great g. granmother came from there. It lies 8 miles inland from Galway City. I also discovered that there was a Claregalway web site which used to have a section were you could leave questions about it's history and people, but I think this has been discontinued. The author to the book lives only about one and a half miles out of the town and he was able to tell me there were none of my relatives buried in Claregalway.
If I can remember any other facts that might be useful to you I will post them.

Hi Brian, hope you were lucky in tracking links with your Great Granmother when you visited Claregalway. You must have found the area interesting & enjoyable to have returned again,I have tracked the Greallys from Claregalway back to the very start of the 1800 on one line yet there are other branches to tie in (brothers & sisters where did they go etc )What a shame that web site is not still running it would have been so use full, then again we may have given them to much hassle bombbarding them with questions, they may have banned me from going on it, for asking to many unnecessary questions. But it would have been great as local people would have great knowledge. Nipy
PS I have been to Claregalway we stayed in Galway & just went out to Claregalway but I have never been to Annaghdown.

Nipy,
I've just come across your post and am excited as I think we are reseraching the same people!
My Name is Mark Grealy and My G-G-G-G Grandfather was Jeremiah Grealy, who married Winifred Delaney. I've been tracking the family roots all the way back to Annaghdown but I'm having troubles putting a few things together. Perhaps you can help?
I'm not sure if I am missing any children of Jeremiah and Winifred. So far I know of Honora (married Devaney), Catherine (married O'Brien??), Mary, James (married Kate surname unknown - they had a son James who drowned in Goulburn, NSW at age 8), Winifred (married Cain), Thomas (married Margaret Naughton), Patrick (my G-G-G Grandfather - married Ellen Hynes) and Cecilia (I only know her name at that's it!)
Do you know of any other children? Or have any more infromation on those listed above?
I would be happy to share with you what I have regarding their time in Goulburn, NSW and in the Yackandandah area of Victoria.
Hope you can help.
Mark Grealy

I have a Mary Grealy, ( baptised June 1795 ) in Tuam, daughter of John Grealy and Eleanor Hynes. She married Patrick Stanton, Annaghdown, and produced Michael, ( baptised Oct 1811 ). I can't find any trace of the family after 1857 when John Stanton, son of Michael emigrated to New York. Let me know if there is any connection to your Grealy's and would appreciate any information as to whether they remained in Galway or went elsewhere.
-
hi emtorg & welcome to R/C will take notices of your info & if I get any leads will get back to you----don't forget that Annaghdown did come under the parish of Tuam at one time, there for the family may have always been living in the area of Annaghdown as I do Know the surnames of Hynes,Grealy & Stanton were common in the parish of Annaghdown & the Hynes & Grealys of Annaghdown emigrated to both USA & Australia, alot of my Grealy line went to USA----Good Luck ---regards Nipy
