Hi,
I'm new to this forum (& researching family history for that matter!), not sure if anyone can help, but I believe a branch of my husband's family is from NZ.
His Great Grandmother was Bernadette Mary Raphael Josephine Redwood (her birth records would help to confirm a link to the Redwood family in NZ), I believe she was born in Blenheim NZ (a guess as this is where the family was from) she may have been born anywhere between about 1880 and 1890 (she was married in 1909 in Australia). If my other educated guesses are correct, her parents were Charles Redwood (b. 1837 approx, d 1915) & Mary Elizabeth Grimstone (b. 1843 approx, d. 1912). Charles Redwood was the son of Henry Redwood Sr, an early pioneer and the brother of Archbishop Francis Redwood.
What I'm after is:
:) Bernadette Mary Raphael Josephine Redwood's Birth details
:) Charles Redwood & Mary Elizabeth Grimstone's Marriage details
:) Any other children Charles & Mary may have had, I believe it could be as many as 15
If anyone can help I'd be very grateful...
Cheers.....JJ Girl
P.S. Hope it's OK to ask for this type of thing...

Hi JJ Girl
Regarding Charles Redwood and Mary Grimstone's marriage details.
All I can give you is that they were married in 1865 Folio Number #0847 here in New Zealand.
To have full date, witnesses and where the marriage took place, you will have to order a printout, but being so early, I do not know how much information you will receive, and its in the higher price range.
Thanks heaps Christine.

Hi JJ Girl
Do a google search with "Charles Redwood" zealand
Quite a few hits and some could be children, looks like your Charles Redwood arrived here in 1842 - could be on the ship "Bolton" with my some of my family, will go and check.
Thanks heaps Christine

Thanks heaps Christine

I phoned the Marlborough Museum and they have some information about the Redwood family. I will go and see what they have but probably not until next Tuesday as the research room is only open two days each week.
The "George Fyffe" went to Wellington and Nelson

Hi Bronwen, Christine & Althea,
Thank you all so much for providing me with such fabulous information. I've had a look at all the links you suggested and they were very helpful.
I'm pretty sure the Redwood family arrived in 1842 aboard the George Fyfe (thank you for the passenger list).
I have previously discovered the Papers Past site - isn't it fantastic! And have spent many hours seaching to find Bernadette Redwood's birth, but to no avail - she's really my biggest mystery!
Do you think it's important to obtain marriage certificates, or if it's referenced in an old newspaper does that make it a valid enough option - what do you think...told you I'm new at this!
Thank you all again......and thank you very much Bronwen for offering to visit the library - that is very kind indeed!
Cheers........Samantha (JJ) :D

Hi JJ Gill
Some people have just the right family members that history loves. I have also seen this house on a New Zealand stamp.

Thanks heaps Christine

Do you have Bernadettes marriage or death cert,
asking because if we can get a more exact timeframe for her birth, then it would make it easier to get her birth cert..plus to look for birth notice if not.

Did you see this obituary for Charles wife she died in Queensland

Thank you for Mary Redwoods article re: her death in Queensland - it's all very interesting.
I don't have the actual marriage certificate - but think I will order it soon, so far have just done the search on the Queensland Historical BDM database and have found the following...
Reg # 1908/C2531
Subject family Name: Redwood
Subjects given names: Bernadette Josephine Mary
Other party's name: Nathaniel
I'm confident that this is them....getting this certificate is probably the best way to go isn't it??
Cheers.....Samantha (JJ)

Christine,
You are fabulously amazing.....thank you so much....I think I might order a few certificates this afternoon....
I think also that we might make our next family holiday to NZ - we have a lot of historical sites to visit...
Thanks again....Samantha

These look like two of the fifteen children.
Taken from Papers Past - Nelson Examiner
then matched with Birth Fiche for names
On the 2nd October 1866 at Blenheim, the wife of C Redwood Esq., of a son
- Alphonso Henry Grinstone Redwood 1866 #488 Wairau
On the 11th August 1868 at Riverlands Wairau, Mrs C Redwood of a son
-Francis William Redwood 1868 #545 Wairau
Thanks heaps Christine

Hi Christine,
Thank you for that information, it has helped fill in some blanks....so far I have the following on the 15 children:
1. Alphonso Henry Grimstone b. 2 Oct 1866 I knew about him, but my DOB was out - so thanks!
2. Francis William Redwood b. 11 Aug 1868 I didn't know his name, so thank you!
3. Henry Redwood (no DOB - marriage notice in n'paper, he's the 3rd son, he married Josephine Eissenhardt)
4. Vernon Charles .b 14 Apr 1874 - he was the mayor of Toowoomba QLD
5. Charles Edward b. 1876 (approx)
6. Leo Septimus b. 1880 (approx)
7. Mystery sister she went to the UK from QLD to study Opera with Vernon Charles
8. Bernadette Josephine Mary b. 1886
9. Mystery sister who married a man called Maurice McGrath
10. Mystery Brother I have found reference to a male birth in 1871 - may be Henry or someone else
11. Mystery
12. Mystery
13. Mystery
14. Mystery
15. Mystery
Of the 15 children, three had died by the time their mother Mary Elizabeth had died in Nov 1912 in Toowoomba Qld - not sure if any of them died in NZ as children. I believe (guess really) that many of the family - not all the older ones came to Australia in 1893, Mary would have been 50 so probably not having any children over here!!!
Thank you again for your help!
Cheers......Samantha

Hi Samantha
Nothing helpful to add, just wanted to say WELCOME :) and to comment on what a successful first post you have had and what an interesting family you have to research. You must visit Blenheim and Nelson and look up that house one day.
Hi Christine .. successful day for you too, heaps of info :) and Althea and Bronwen so quick with help.
So yes, "OK to ask for this type of thing" ;D

Thanks Mare & everyone else,
Thank you so much for your kindness :D, I've only been researching the family history since the beginning of the year (some work had been done previously on my side, but none on my husband's) - what I've been completely surprised by is the generosity of the geneology community - it's quite strange in this day and age to find people so willing to help a perfect stranger just for the sake of being helpful - it's restored my faith in human nature!!
I think you're right - the family is turning out to be very interesting - the Redwoods were a prominent bunch and just for some extra spice I have a couple of convicts on my side...exciting stuff!
Thanks again....Samantha :)
-
Counting down on the fifteen children - only 12 to go
George Henry Redwood married Josephine Eugenie Eissenhardt in 1898 #0559
- George Henry Redwood 1871 #620 Wairau
- Eleanor Blanche Mary Redwood 1871 #620 Wairau Twins
- Vernon Charles Redwood 14/4/1874 #662 Wairau
Olive Beatrice Mary Redwood married Maurice Thomas McGrath in 1892 #2427
- Olive Beatrice Mary Redwood 1873 #642 Wairau
Another four down .............
Thanks heaps Christine
-
Thanks Christine (again) :D
The blanks are fast disappearing....atleast future generations won't have as much trouble as this with the advent of birth control...15 children :o - what a woman!
Cheers...Samantha
P.S. Quick question - what is also interesting me about this family is that they seem to have been quite prominient in NZ but I haven't (so far) found anyone else who is researching them - do you think that's unusual??
-
There are researchers who are members of NZSG,
anyone can seach for names and you will see there are definatire REDWOOD/GRIMSTONE researchers
http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Search_31.aspx enter the surnames, you will see details and even though not a member you could ask for contact details or pass on your name for referral

Thanks Althea,
I'll try that....

Hi JJ Girl
another one
Charles Edward Joseph 1878 #2399 Wairau
I have found Vernon Charles Redwood's birth details in the "Marlborough Express"
- On the April 14, 1874 at Riverlands the wife of Mr C Redwood of a son
this paper isn't searchable, but you might be able to find the balance of the children, if you search one day at a time - it will keep to busy - now if only Mary Redwood had read the newspaper over and over ...
Thanks heaps Christine
-
Hi Samantha
WOW ! Some wonderful information contributed here !
Well done everybody. :)
I just spotted this on IGI - see
http://www.familysearch.org/
> George Henry REDWOOD
born 24 September 1871 - Riverlands, Nelson
Parents: Charles REDWOOD and Mary :
Lu
-
Hi Lucy - what do you think
Nelson Examiner
On the 24 September 1871 at Riverlands Marlborough the wife of Mr Charles Redwood of a son
when checked against the birth fiche for 1871 it looks like twins,
George Henry Redwood
and Eleanor Blanche Mary Redwood 1871 both with #620 Wairau
But why is the daughter not listed in the birth notice, could she had died, or is this a male thing, will have to check the death fiche.
Thanks heaps Christine
-
Hi Christine :)
Great work !
Mmm ... yes, looks like a twin birth ... and I would suspect the wee daughter perhaps died shortly after birth ??
Rather sad her seemingly brief existence, wasn't acknowledged ? But, at least her birth was registered !
[I have a case of twins in my family - mid 1870's - daughter who lived just 1 month - birth / death were registered. Her twin brother doesn't appear in Birth index ! He died ( in the following year) aged 17 weeks, but only his death is recorded.
Thankfully I found their baptism records in the wonderful card index system at Christchurch Library.]

Hello JJ Girl
I went to the museum today and they have a folder of Redwood family info. There was a photo of Charles Redwood and family taken in 1890 which they put onto a CD for me but when I got home there wasn't anything on the CD so will now have to wait they are open again (Thursday) to do anything about it. The family were named on a separate piece of cardboard as follows:
Back Row: George, Francis, Olive, Mrs Redwood, Mary (Mother Bernard of Sisters of Mercy), Mr Redwood, Vernon, Alphonso, Ciss
Front Row: Joseph, Leo, Bernadette, Charlotte, Constance, Charles
On another piece of paper there was a numbered list of his children but couldn't find birth dates for any of them in the folder. There was no indication who had written the list.
1. Alphonso
2. Francis
3. Mary
4. George
5. Olive
6. Vernon
7. Joseph
8. Cis
9. Charles
10. Leo
*Jack Stephen Pessant (died)
11. Charlotte
12. Constance
13. Bernadette
* Elizabeth (died)
* These two names were listed as above but not numbered.

Hi Everyone....
Oh my goodness, I've been off working for a couple of days and haven't checked my computer....wow!!
Lu, Christine & Bronwen......thank you so much....I'm staggered that you have found all 15 children, I know my mother-in-law will be thrilled to learn so much about her grandmother's siblings and family...
Bronwen :) thank you so much for your trip to the museum (I wonder if I can convince my husband we should plan an NZ holiday immediately!! ::)) I can't believe you have found a photo of the family - that is so very precious...we only have a couple of grainy photos of Bernadette when she was very elderly...I would be incredibly grateful to see a photo of the whole clan - if you do go back to the museum that would be super, if it's too much to ask, I'll just have to convince the husband to book the flight!!
Thank you again everyone.....you've been amazing...
Cheers.......Samantha (JJ)
P.S. Bronwen, if you do go to the museum again, could you please let them know that their "contact us" section of their website isn't working (& they don't list an email address)....thanks...Sam

hi, I see some research coming through on the Redwoods from NZ. I am a granddaughter of Constance. Charlotte and Bernadette were also my aunts . I would love to hear from some other descendants, please.

jjGirl, thanks for your email but I cant seem to reply. there is no facility, it seems to reply to messages in my inbox. Do u know of any?
What can we do?
Bernadette was my aunt, never knew she was even married, when I knew her, her nickname was BABE, we called her Aunty Babe. she was lovely, married to a Jack Hearne, and is buried next to her 2 sisters, Charlotte, Called Tarl, so my Aunty Tarl, and my grandmother Constance, we called Connie!
Hope to hear from u soon and sort out this message thing!

Hi Christine
A week or so ago, I spotted someone on another board (may have been Australia ?), with this same problem of not being able to send PM's (personal messages).
It seems that RootsChat has been plagued of late, with spammers who hook up to this site, and send spam via the PM facility. To prevent this, there has apparently been a new "ruling", whereby newcomers to the site, are required to have posted a number of messages (I think it may be at least, 5), before they are able (themselves) to send a PM to another RootsChatter. (I see you currently have just the 2 posts).
So let's try this? You reply to this message here. Then, post another two messages to this thread (no need to write anything ... just send a smiley face or whatever).
That way, you will have your "required 5 messages posted" and .... hopefully the problem will be solved. :)

thank you very much Lu. The site was not placing the reply box on the page, this morning an update from microsoft come through and since then it blocked my firewall and now this.
THe ISP said it had a few of the same complaints. Persume Micorsoft fix it soon

JJ Girl, where was the photo of Bernadette taken? and to whom was she married in 1909 please?
Thanks

Hi Christine
8) Hope that has "done the trick" and you are now able to send a PM to Samantha ?
Lu
-
:D quick thinking Lu
Being the recipient of unwanted spam personal message I can understand the thinking behind restricted PM's...... however as a result of my Cook searching on NZ board, a most welcome PM was received by an otherwise onknown relative who joined just to make the PM and was most welcome. Such a shame procedures have to be put in place ... having to make a few posts first :-\

:D ps
Welcome to Rootschat Christine
:) mare
-
Hi Mare
Anything to ward off the spammers, is OK by me! ;D
I think this "new ruling" is reasonable .... providing newcomers to the site, are advised of it when they come "onboard". (And obviously there are a few quick ways around this hurdle. ;) ).

Hi Everyone - thanks for all the help with the message issues!!
Christine's message did get through and I've sent her another reply - hope you got it Christine...
It does sound like the same Bernadette as I know in later life she was remarried to Jack Hearne - my mother-in-law tells me she was known as Babe..
The plot thickens!!
Cheers.....Samantha :)
P.S. The only photos we have are of fairly poor quality and were taken in the 1970's...
P.S.S. Bronwen very kindly went to the Museum in Marlborough in April and located a photo of the family in the Redwood file - unfortunately the file wasn't transfered successfully by the museum staff, to her CD and so I don't have a copy at this stage - might have to plan a trip to NZ!! What a treasure that photo would be!! :o
-
Me again Christine,
Bernadette Redwood married Nathaniel Green in 1908 (Francis Redwood married them). They had five children (three of whom survived) and were divorced in 1923.
Cheers...Samantha
