Title: Looking for greenhalgh relatives.
Post by: A.Enting on Wednesday 26 March 08 10:48 GMT (UK)
It seems to be harder to find more recent members of the Family tree than those further back in time (no recent census material  :( ). Few of my near family are still living and family history information is sketchy. So here comes a  plea from the heart  to anyone out there who may be looking into their family history.....which we possibly share.

I have traced my direct line back a good way. However, to complete the picture, I would like to move sideways to my Great Grandmother's sister's family as the two families were seemingly close. My G.Grandmother was Elizabeth Ellen Emerson (nee Pollitt), married to Abraham Emerson, living at Lord Street Radcliffe and later Blackpool.

Her sister was known by her middle name Hannah - full name Eliza Hannah Pollitt and married a Mr Greenhalgh in 1902. They had several children and lived in Radcliffe (around the Cross St, Water Lane area). I do not know much about the children - who would be my Great Aunts and Uncles (I think), and all born in the Radcliffe area), but of the names I do know ......There was Edna May Greenhalgh b.1908 who married Mr. McCreary - they lived in Blackpool. Wilfred who married Gertrude (Gerti), Elsie, Ethel and others. it was a large family. My mum (very young at the time and now in her 70's) said two of the girls were excellent bakers and sold cakes from a little shop or house - again in the Radcliffe locality.

If these names mean anything to you, or you recognise anything here, I would love to hear from you as it appears to be a big and significant branch missing from my tree. All the Greenhalgh children I refer to would be deceased now and sadly I never met any of them. My family had moved South to Kent and lost touch. I am in Lincolnshire and have difficulty getting time in Lancashire for reasearch, so would love to hear from a long lost Greenhalgh decendant.

I also have info to share, as the Greenhalgh and Emerson lines meet in Thomas and Elizabeth Pollitt (nee Crook) who married in 1879.  Anyone researching Pollitt and Greenhalgh will know how difficut it can be, as the names are so popular in Lancashire.

Thank you with high hopes  :)  Angela.

Hello Eyup.

Thank you for your response to my message. It is a difficult one as Greenhalgh is such a frequent name in the lancashire area. I am pinning some hopes on the next census release in a couple of years to fill in a lot of gaps. My original search was to trace a deceased but lost relative - I was successful and now my still remaining relatives are thrilled to know what happened and that he was safe and well cared for. (This family tree stuff is not just casual curiosity). It made for a tearful emotional search! To fill in the gaps it would be great to find the Greenhalgh side of the family but unless a surving member of the deceased members I mentioned recognise the relatives and choose to make themselves known, I think 11years of my lost great uncle will always remain a mystery. I had some wonderful turns of fate and information in the search so you never know - I may still be fortunate. But thank you very much for your interest. If you want to show my message to your relative she may recognise something in it and could contact me through the personnel message system.

PS.  Thank you moderator - I fully appreciate the confidentiality issues.

best regards all,
Angela.

Hello Angela,
I know what you mean .I brought two of my wifes relatives together, one of them thought his grandad had died in the first world war and he died in 1987.
Took me two years of research to find that branch of my wifes family. Anyway best of luck, I will show her your info, she married a greenhalgh, I dont think she would know a great deal but one never knows.

Hi - if you have lost Alice Greenhalgh born 1794 (in Bolton?)who married Mr Buckley (who died) ....then I have her!   She married George Tiplady in 1847 in Manchester.

Milly ;D

Thank you Milly, I must confess I haven't got back as far as 1794 on the Greenhalgh line yet. (Had some terrific success with a couple of other lines which have taken over my time for a few months). But thank you - I will keep the information and it may yet fit in as I work my way back.

Many thanks :)

Angela.

Hi Angela, my mother's maiden name was Greenhalgh, full name Alice Greenalgh. Her sisters were Ethel, Annie, Gertie, Elsie, Edna (the baker) and then I think there was Harry, Ronald, Bert, Harold.

I have just started my research into the family and have arrived as far as Elisa Hannah Pollitt (Greenhalgh) who would have been my grandmother and she was married to Samuel Rothwell Greenhalgh.

Hopes this adds some small assistance to your research and I would be interesting in hearing anything from your side concerning the Greenhalgh family.

Cheers, Keith

Hi Angela, just to let you know that my wife and I visited Aunty Edna's home in Blackpool some years ago and she was married to Neil McCreary, I remember Uncle Neil taught me how to ride my first bicycle! As well as bake cakes etc, Auntie Edna loved to sing! Keith

Oh - This is wonderful news. For so long I have not been able to locate much information from the Greenhalgh side of the family. I do have quite a lot of information coming down from Eliza Hannah Greenhalgh (nee Pollitt)'s sister Elizabeth Ellen Pollitt who married Abraham Emerson a violinist in Manchester and Blackpool (also soldier) my Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather. These two sister's were the daughters of Thomas Pollitt (a butcher in Radcliffe) and Elizabeth Pollitt (nee Crook) a wonderful lady who always seemed to be there when the family needed help- bereavements etc. There is proberbly too much to go into here if you are interested in my sibling line, but there is also some info going back from your Eliza and Samual. It may be best to look for my tree (Angela's Family Tree' a public tree on Ancestry - just use Eliza Hannah Greenhalgh as a search) and perhaps I can guest you in or send my email through 'private message' if you would like to discuss this in more detail.

I know I have a mother and aunt still living who have fond memories of visits with the Greenhalgh side of the family in Radcliffe and would love to know more about the family - as after they moved south they very much lost touch with the Greenhalghs.   I must end know as about to be decended on by decorators - so may be a slight delay in getting back to you but very excited at this news. :D :D ttfn angela.

Hi Angela, many thanks for your reply, not sure how I access your family tree as I do not belong to ancestry.com. If you want to know more about my side of the family please let me know and I will see what I can do. It would be very interesting for me to know more about the Pollitt side of the family. Look forward to hearing from you. Keith

Hi Keith,
Thank you for getting back to me . I tried yesterday to send some information thru Private Message - wether due to my computer (giving a few problems lately - will replace after Christmas) or because of any limits on the reply field?  I had difficulty and sent the message in two parts. Think you did not get the 1st part :(   When I tried to send the message it said -already sent - but I do not think it did.

Any way, I was giving you some more earlier generations and explaining that I will work out how to send you the part of my tree that may be of interest. I should be able to select that section and email it to you somehow. I will apply my husband to the problem.  ;) We do this 'tree' stuff as a bit of a double-act  8) Hubby is the wizard on the technical stuff with the computer and I am good at the reasearch bit which Hubby does not have the patience for  ::) - Anyway - hope to talk soon.  Take care, Angela.

Hi Angela

I am just about to begin researching my family tree, my maiden name was Greenhalgh. My father was  one of the family you are searching for,  Keith who has already replied to you is my cousin. Keith's family sadly lost touch with the family some years ago. My father was called Wilfred Thomas Greenhalgh, born in July 1905, he married Joan Hoskison in December1941. Both my Mother and Father are now deceased.
My name is Gillian Mary, I have one Brother, John Richard and one sister, Judith Anne both living
I have very fond memories of my Grandmother and Christmases at her house where the whole family used to gather on Christmas day.
As far as I can remember Dad's family were Annie, Gertrude, Ethel, Elsie, Alice, Edna, Ronald and Harry. I think there may have been more, I will talk to my brother, he may remember.
I would be happy to send any further information if I can, perhaps we could email? I'm not sure how this works as this is the first time I have been on this site.
Kind regards
Gill

Hi Gill, This is great! It has been so long without any information from the Greenhalgh family line and now 2 contacts. :) Thank you so much for responding. I have checked-off your father's siblings on my tree and the only ones on my list not mentioned are:  Keith thinks there may have been a Bert and I have Samuel Herbert born 1904 (from the 1911 census completed by Eliza Hannah - your Grandma) Oh. ???Penny has just dropped! Samuel HERBERT! That must be the BERT Keith remembers. So there we go - one more sibling on your list.
I will send you a personal message with my email. I am sure there must be more to be discovered. I have quite a lot I can send you - not to take the fun out of research, but you may like to double check it all anyway.
If you have just started family research - you will love it. So much to be found and it is a joy to find all these people we never knew about. Your Great Grandma (Eliza Hannah's mum) was Elizabeth Pollitt nee Crook and an amazing lady - always there when needed! Your Great Grandad was another Samuel (Samuel Rothwell's Dad) and he was a publican at the Royal Oak on Water Street, Radcliffe. But you may know all this already. If you are on ancestry I can show you my tree, if not, I am getting my husband to show me how to send the relevant sections to you and Keith.  Talk soon on Private message. Take care. Angela.

Hi Angela

I was amazed when you said that your Mum may remember my Mum and myself. that is incredible.

Anyway I can now give you the final listing of the children of Eliza Hannah Greenhalgh, they are:

Edna May, married to Neil(had a bakers shop in Lord Street in Radcliffe)
Ethel, married to Harry Hill (Ethel would often go and help Edna with the baking at her shop)
Alice Maria married to Wilfred Fensom
Gertrude (Gertie), married to Arthur
Elsie, late in life married Irvin
Annie married to Robert (Bob)
Harry
Ronald married to Lizzie
Harold married to Hilda
Wilfred Thomas married to Joan
Bert married to Liz
Christopher (died either in childbirth or at a very young age)

I think that is it for the moment

KInd regards

Keith

  :)Hi Angela

Thanks so much for your reply, I am not sure whether Keith will get to see this message too (me being a novice at this), but if he does, hi Keith, I can't remember when I last saw you, long time ago anyway.
Anyway Angela, I am off to America on Monday, won't be back until 19 Jan. I have a daughter living there and am going to spend Christmas with her, her husband and my grandson aged 3. Very exciting!!

I would love to see the information you have, I propose to start my research when I come back from America.

Regards
Gill

Hi Gill, it was a surprise and very good to hear from you. Have a wonderful time in USA with your family and look forward to hearing from you again when you are back in UK. Maybe as both of us are novices at this geneology stuff we can exchange any information.
Kind regards, Keith

Hi,

I am not sure if we would be related or not.  My Grandfathers name was James Nathinel Greenhalgh, he was born in Sullihul, & he married Betty Bragg also from Sullihul region.  Betty came from a family of 8 children.  I don't believe James had any siblings, however I believe both his parents came from latge families.

We have not been able to locate many of the Greenhalgh relatives.

Hope this might help.

Ellysa Greenhalgh.

Hello Ellysa,  I cannot connect James Nathaniel to the family on my tree (but have not found all children born to the children of Samuel and Hannah Eliza Greenhalgh). I havn'nt heard for some while from recent greenhalgh relatives I spoke to a few months back. If they view this post or I hear from them, I shall certainly mention the name and they may recognise it. My Nathaniel McCreary married to Edna Greenhalgh, I have found a lot about recently and he was born in Scotland. I doubt I will research to much further into the Greenhalgh line are they are not direct ancestors of mine - but a sibling line included in my tree as they and my Emerson ancestors of Radcliffe, were very close and much respected and loved by my Mum and Aunt. However, I would still love to speak to anyone connected to the family. I shall keep this post in mind, as you never know when or where a connection will pop-up. I appreciate your difficulty tracing the Greenhalgh name as it is such a popular name in Lancashire - I had a few difficult moments but then some lucky breaks aided by family stories.
If Gill and Keith are reading this - I hope you are both well - I had responded to latest emails (though we have had email problems this end). It would be great to hear from you again.
Thank you all and Take care, Angela.  :)

I have some photos dated from the 1930s of some Greenhalgh relatives whom my mother visited in the 1930s. They include pictures of a Jim Greenhalgh and his parents with a pet dog (spaniel?) outside their house in Solihull -100 Alder hook road - does this mean anything to you? Could this Jim be your grandfather? There are a couple of pictures of a fair-haired child, apparently Jim's son Peter.

Hi Lucykin,
Thank you for your email. I am afraid I cannot connect Jim or Peter with the Greenhalghs on my tree and to-date have not found my relatives in Solihull. Mine seemed to keep close in Radcliffe and Blackpool. It is a difficult one, the Greenhalgh name, there are so many Greenhalghs in that part of the country. Many thanks for your contact - you just never know were a connection will pop up. Wishing you good luck on the family tree hunt. kind regards, Angela.

Thanks for your reply, Angela; I'm sorry I can't help you either. In fact I meant really to direct my comments towards Elyssa Greenhalgh. I hope Elyssa might respond as she seemed to have connections in Solihull.
However, I also have Greenhalgh ancestors who lived in Radcliffe. If anyone has any photos/info about Nathaniel Greenhalgh (b 1957 in Darcy Lever) and his wife Alice Hilton (b 1857 in Tyldesley) or any of their 8 children, I would be very interested.
