Hi Kate
It is quite difficult to find you way around first off ;D
Not sure if you have had a chance to read through it yet, but in Beginners there is a piece that says
'Beginners Links' click on that and there are loads of useful links and if I remember rightly BMD (Births Deaths and Marriages) is the first one.
Have a good read and then if you have any questions pop back here and we will advise. ;)

Sorry if I keep asking questions there is so much info it's difficult to know where to start

Hi Kate
Never a problem ask away - give it a few months and you will be advising people ;D
I always find it good to have a read of all the links you can find; quite often come across a useful site, which I can then bookmark for future use.
It is a real voyage of discovery on here and will all have to set sail from somewhere ;D
Catch you on the threads

Hi Kate
National Burial Index is on Findmypast.com which is a subscription or pay to view site.

Hi Kate - it depends a lot on where you want the records for too. There are various local websites eg Manchester have a really good one for their municipal cemeteries. And then there are also various CDs with Memorial Inscription Transcripts or Parish Records on them... in addition to the National Burial Index (which I have to say I have had very little success with as none of the people I want are ever listed!). A post asking about a specific area should elicit some helpful response from a lovely rootschatter

Hello again!
Areas I am looking for are Birstall, Hanging Heaton, Batley, Yorshire basically
:)
Thank you (again) :-*

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to look up and post information from National Burial Index, I had a posting of mine deleted because of this. Can't remember the wording now, but it was something to do with the licence. I'm sure a Mod will re-quote the appropriate words.

I was thinking more that some local person might know if there were any local CDs or oher reference sources other than NBI they could recommend - although I didn't know there was a non posting of NBI info issue. Makes sense -of course. :) :)

I know in Manchester you can get burial records but you have to pay, yet in Tameside they are online and for free. If you do come across any most places want you to pay.

I thought the rules for entries from the NBI were the same as for data from other sites for which a copyright applies. That is you can transcribe information from them onto this site but you must not cut and paste it.

Welcome to rootschat Jackie.
Your best bet is to start by buying the death certificate to find out precisely where and when they died if you don't already have that information.
Then as mentioned above try the NBI to see if that contains any information. The local FHS may have collected the Memorial Inscriptions from the local graveyards but not submitted any information to the NBI
After that you need to look for church and cemetery records which will either be in the local record office or if more recent still on site. Cemeteries which are still used will often hold grave maps and details of who is buried where.
It however comes down to proper research because in many cases no-one will have indexed the information that you are looking for.

Hi,
Can anybody tell me if the burial records on findmypast are the same as the national burial index on cd? I've had little success with the NBI cd and would be willing to subscribe to FindMyPast if their records were more comphrensive.

The NBI info on Findmypast is also on Family History online and this is a pay-per-view site - you pay a minimum of £5, and the cost of looking at results is debited from what you've paid - cost is pennies.
http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/
On their list of databases, it says "NBI including some new entries not on the 2nd edition CDS and, for some counties, a more comprehensive Burial Details database is available".
Findmypast also has pay-per-view facility.
