John Jervis b c 1827 in Eccleshall appears in the 1841 cenus in Eccleshall and I belive it to be the same person in 1881 in Stoke on Trent when that John has married an Elizabeth and had a daughter Harriett in 1862 in Stafford.
I hope that someone can help with this confusion by finding him and his family in the 1851 to 1871 census return. He could be in Stafford for the 1861 census but they are in Stoke upon Trent in 1881.
Many thanks
Graham

Hi - found the same family as Ecneps in 1871, and this family in the 1861:
RG9 P.1908 Fol 15 Pg 23
Baswich, Stockton, Stafford
JERVIS on image, transcribed as Jarvis
John Head M 29 Ag Lab B. Staffs, Eccleshall
Elizabeth Wife M 41 B. Staffs, Hopton
John Son 7 B. Staffs Hopton
Joseph Son 13 Ag Lab. B, Shrops, newport
George Son 5 B. Staffs, Tixall
Thomas Son 2 B. Staff Baswich
Elizabeth Yates M in Law 75 B. Staffs, Landon
I realise John's age is a bit out, but there doesn't seem to be another B. Eccleshall except one who is a butcher and married to Ann
I suspect Joseph is Joseph Yates ?

Was just going to post that one, Elizabeth's birthplace Hopton is near to Salt and Harriet born Stockton, it ties in nicely, just wondering where young Thomas & George went

Can't find Thomas - although there are two of the right age in service but not close to home.
John is I think in service in Seabridge in 1871 - which is where the family were living then.
George could be in service in Stone:
I'm hampered by a very scanty knowledge of Staffordshire geography.
I can't see anything possible in 1851 for the moment ?

Elizabeth Yates and John Jervis on same page marriage Q1. 1854 Stafford Vol. 6b Pg. 15

Yes I thought that Joseph might point to a second marriage...
John is 39 on 1861 image though so not that far out :)

There are two John Jervis in 1851 Ag. Labs aged 24 ish, one born Dilhorn and one Maer which is abt 7 miles from Eccleshall.
Most likely is this one though:
1851 HO107/1999 fol.57 p.15
Coton Clanford, Seighford, Staffordshire
Jams Jervis head m 53 Farmer of 84 acres Eccleshall
Mary " wife m 52 High Offley
John " son s 31 Farmers son employed of Farm Eccleshall
Barbara ???

Seighford is about 4 miles from Baswich, where John was in 1861
It's also about 4 miles from Gnosall where James and Mary seem to be in 1841 although next door but one to each other:
1841 HO107/974/6 fol.36 p.12
Knightley, Gnosall, Staffs
James Jervis 45 Ag Lab
//
next door but one:
in household of John Higgins, farmer
Mary Jervis 40 F. S. (female servant)
James & Mary both born in county
Unfortunately this doesn't help to be certain the John found by Graham belongs to this family or not - was that the one in Chapel Chorlton male servant aged 14 in household of John Benion, farmer?

Just as a matter of interest - and no help at all - there are IGI baptisms for John, George and Harriett.

Thanks folks. :D
It is coming together.
If John is 39 in the 1861 then it is not impossible that Joseph is John's son born before they married is it?
There is a 1841 census record for a John Jervis in Chapel Chorlton Eccleshall aged 14. This may also be the same John. However I don't have th reference.

many thanks Alli,
Not sure whether it is the same person. There are several John Je(a)rvis born 1826/7 in the parishes round Stone and so far I have been unable to establish which is which. There are several families at that time in Dilhorne but none appear before 1800 so must have moved there from a neighbouring parish probably Stoke on Trent or Stone. Eccleshall is a bit far away but not impossible. Incedentally it looks as if the John and Grace you found were married in Milwich in 1824.

Hi Graham.
Have only just started researching again after a couple of years off. Noticed your post and as John Jervis 1827 Eccleshall was my gg grandfather if you still need answers just ask!

Hi Graham,
Unable to reply personally as only on second post.
John Jervis 1827 son also John Jervis 1855 married Harriet Ackerley and according to new info on 1911 census had 11 children 7 of which survived. 5 shown on census are William, Ada, Harold, Frances and Ellis living at Stamer St in Stoke on Trent.
No father for John Jervis 1827 yet. Still sorting out Joseph 1849 as John 1827 married Elizabeth Yates in 1854 - may be a nephew as often relatives were farmed out if they lost their own parents.

Interesting I couldn't find them on the 1911 census. Could you provide me with details?
Thanks

Hi Graham,
Neither could I but having had wrong transcriptions of surnames before looked under lots of variants and eventually found them under Jevis. I have notified them of the error so it may be corrected soon.
