Title: KerryB's Second Chance Scavenger Hunt. Everyone Welcome To Join In.
Post by: Tephra on Tuesday 25 March 08 12:56 GMT (UK)

Welcome to KerryB's Second Chance Scavenger Hunt.   This is a very interesting one and I'm sure you'll get your teeth into it well and truly.   It appears a little complicated at first, but I know you'll work it all out and find heaps of information.

So here it is.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

                          ******************************

Hi Guys

I’ve got a nice easy one here, haha!  It’s not Traies and its not Baldwins.

My gran’s letters written in the 1930s to grandad (whilst courting) mention some relatives that I would love to fit into the tree.  I think because of the names they are her maternal relatives, seem to fit the pattern of names but it would be interesting to see if we can fill in the details for 2 generations of the Payne family with missing census returns and spouses, children etc.

The relatives that are mentioned are Uncle Maurice, Auntie Maggie, Auntie Jennie, Cousin Alice, Cousin Winnie and an Olive.  There is also an Uncle Arthur.  The letters are written from Warwick and Uncle Maurice worked at the Morris Car works in Coventry.

Gran’s mother was Emily Payne born 1883 in Lingfield, Surrey and died 1950 in Lingfield.

Her siblings were:

Henry Payne born 1867, Lingfield, married Alice Steer in 1891, East Grinstead and was a bricklayer, 1871 Lingfield, with parents, 1881 Lingfield with parents
Alice Payne born 1869, Lingfield, 1871 Lingfield with parents, 1881 Lingfield with parents
Martha Payne born 1871, I was told she might have died 1893?   1871 Lingfield with parents, 1881, Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield as housemaid, domestic
Spencer Payne born 1874, also Bricklayer and married Amy Jane Nash in 1896, Brighton, Sussex, 1881 Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield was bricklayer labourer
Clara Payne born 1876, Lingfield, 1881 Lingfield with parents
John Payne born 1878, Lingfield, married Florence Agnes Nash in 1899, Godstone, Surrey, 1881 Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield with parents
Jane Payne born 1881, Lingfield, 1881 Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield with parents
Emily (great grandmother) for which I have details
Alfred Payne born 1887 Grocer and Baker, 1891 Lingfield with parents, 1901 Lingfield with parents
Maurice Payne born 1890, Lingfield, did he move to Coventry area?, 1891   Lingfield with parents, 1901 Lingfield with parents
Frank Payne born 1894, Lingfield, 1901 Lingfield with parents

Parents were John 1844 to 1925 and Jane Payne, 1847 to 1930 both in Lingfield.

So did any of this lot move away to Warwick and can we fill in some of the missing details for them?  I have not actually confirmed any of their dates of birth,  all come from census returns. Some of the other details might be a bit difficult because we don’t access
to 1911 yet but I am sure that some information can be found.

When you get bored of that generation the previous generation were:
Elizabeth Payne born 1836 in Lingfield, appears on 1841 census in Lingfield
George Payne born 1838 in Lingfield, appears on 1841, Lingfield, 1851, Lingfield, 1861 Lingfield, 1871, Lingfield, Ag Lab.
Sarah Payne born 1841 in Lingfield, appears on 1851, Lingfield
Emma Payne born 1849 in Lingfield, appears on 1851, Lingfield and 1861, Lingfield
John Payne born 1884 as above and I have details for him.

Parents were:
John Payne born 1807, Lingfield, died 1890  and Sarah Kesterton 1810 to 1877, Lingfield.

Hope I’m not being cheeky but I never seem to get time to investigate siblings enough!!

Thank you.

Kerry

Toni's off to a good start.

And now for the first mystery - who's Agatha?

Emily my great grand mother was born 1883 and I have her as a servant in Dormans Park in the 1901.

So is Agatha an extra sister I don't know about??

Oh hang on Siser - does that mean she was a Steer!

A possible marriage for Jane Payne b. 1881: (she's not easily seen on 1901 as Payne!)

June q, 1900, Godstone, vol 2a, page 421

Male names:

James Henry B Chadwick

Arthur Howes

Lingfield moved from  East Grinstead to Godstone in 1897

Will check out on the 1901.

Hi Kerry

re Maurice i think maybe we wil hacve to wait until the 1911 census as there are several possible marriages that may be him - well there are 13 in total 1866-1920 but i was thinking of the 1907 onwards ones, anyway there are several possibilites and we don't really know where he was after 1901 so we cant really narrow it down. :-\

Back to STEER for a moment.  I fall all over them in the parish register films I have on perm loan at my FHC.  Don't recall if Egham, Surrey, Westerham, Kent, or Feltham, Middx, or any combo thereof, but you mentioned Surrey, so....

Don't know when I can get back to FHC, but let me know if you want anything in particular looked up in those places.

Also, St George Hanover Square was not filmed by LDS, but there is a book of marriages that can be accessed on Google Books.  Births were not done as a book.  All the parish's records are held at the Westminster Archives.

You guys are awesome!  Good luck on this hunt, Kerry!

She's on the 1891 and then seems to disappear after marrying James Chadwick,  I had a brief look this afternoon and can't find either of them on the 1901.  Couldn't see them on A* deaths either.  Did they die, was their name mistranscribed, did they emigrate?  Hmmm

PAYNE Gladys V  & Albert E Mills-strudwick   Brighton.2b   542   Q1   1918

Good finding Sue, shame they didnt have any children by 1901, (well not with them anyway)
that death looks pretty likely too.
i did a search on Gardner births with mmn. Payne there were a few but none directly where they married / lived so not sure if they belong to Kerry or not  :-\

the bits i have added are in purple

My gran’s letters written in the 1930s to grandad (whilst courting) mention some relatives that I would love to fit into the tree.  I think because of the names they are her maternal relatives, seem to fit the pattern of names but it would be interesting to see if we can fill in the details for 2 generations of the Payne family with missing census returns and spouses, children etc.

The relatives that are mentioned are Uncle Maurice, = Maurice Payne Auntie Maggie, Auntie Jennie,= possibly Jennie Skinner or Jennie Thorpe ?  Cousin Alice, Cousin Winnie and an Olive. - Winnie & Olive possible births given these need following up on the census  There is also an Uncle Arthur.

Alice Payne born 1869, Lingfield, 1871 Lingfield with parents, 1881 Lingfield with parents      Sue found in 1891,1901 and her death also
Martha Payne born 1871, I was told she might have died 1893?   1871 Lingfield with parents, 1881, Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield as housemaid, domestic   death confirmedSpencer Payne born 1874, also Bricklayer and married Amy Jane Nash in 1896, Brighton, Sussex, 1881 Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield was bricklayer labourer   found in 1901 in brighton
Clara Payne born 1876, Lingfield, 1881 Lingfield with parents   found in 1891 & marriage    John Payne born 1878, Lingfield, married Florence Agnes Nash in 1899, Godstone, Surrey, 1881 Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield with parents   found in 1901
Jane Payne born 1881, Lingfield, 1881 Lingfield with parents, 1891 Lingfield with parents   found marriage to .... (can't remember) Chadwick then she dissappearsEmily (great grandmother) for which I have details
Alfred Payne born 1887 Grocer and Baker, 1891 Lingfield with parents, 1901 Lingfield with parents
Maurice Payne born 1890, Lingfield, did he move to Coventry area?, 1891   Lingfield with parents, 1901 Lingfield with parents, i think we are waiting for the 1911 census for various reasonsFrank Payne born 1894, Lingfield, 1901 Lingfield with parents

George Payne born 1838 in Lingfield, appears on 1841, Lingfield, 1851, Lingfield, 1861 Lingfield, 1871, Lingfield, Ag Lab.  found in 1881
Sarah Payne born 1841 in Lingfield, appears on 1851, Lingfield
Emma Payne born 1849 in Lingfield, appears on 1851, Lingfield and 1861, Lingfield
John Payne born 1884 as above and I have details for him.

Parents were:
John Payne born 1807, Lingfield, died 1890  and Sarah Kesterton 1810 to 1877, Lingfield.

Hi guys

I'm back

Been having Indesign and Photoshop training all day, very very very good and useful but now I have a blinding headache!  :'(

I'll have a look at what you have all added later but its looking good.  James Chadwick - hmmm, as Gadget says nothing there, who was he and where did he come from or go to?  As the only record we can find for him is the marriage certificate is there a possibility they got the name wrong on the certificate?  Probably not because I did search for Jane in forename and nothing came up.  Hmmm

Deb - yes Ann is Sarah's mother, living next door and William was apparently a very late arrival.  I've never traced William elsewhere.  Not the one you found, his parents were John and Ann and he should be born in either Lingfield.

Hi

looked on complete marriage index.

seems like Jennie Thorpe married Frederick C Payne
Brighton Sussex
vol 2b p 576

I cannot find Jennie Skinner ... will look using complete index again.

I am not sure what I am looking for , just give me directions as I am a bit lost ...

deb  ;D

one of Kerrys grans letters mention an aunt Jennie, we didnt have a Jennie Payne so i was working on the pretence that Jennie was nee ..... married a Payne the only two possibles i came up with were Jennie Thorpe & Jennie Skinner but i couldnt find their husbands, i think i saw somewhere a Ray S Payne (thats not confirmed) and now Deb has found Frederick Payne so do we have a Frederick Payne? auntie Jennie could of course just be someone who was known as auntie and not actually a relative  :-\

Arrr now the Olive in Coventry 1911 looks really possible, that's the same age as my gran.

unless you get the cert will have to wait for the 1911 census  ::)

following up on Alfred Payne b. circa 1887 here is his birth, unfortunately he doesn't have a middle name so he is more difficult to spot on the marriage index

the bits i have added are in purple

The letters are written from Warwick and Uncle Maurice worked at the Morris Car works in Coventry.

Gran’s mother was Emily Payne born 1883 in Lingfield, Surrey and died 1950 in Lingfield.

Her siblings were:

Henry Payne born 1867, Lingfield, married Alice Steer in 1891, East Grinstead and was a bricklayer, 1871 Lingfield, with parents, 1881 Lingfield with parents1891 Lingfield with inlaws, 1891 in Brighton

Elizabeth Payne born 1836 in Lingfield, appears on 1841 census in Lingfield married William reynolds found on 1871, 81, 91 and 1901
George Payne born 1838 in Lingfield, appears on 1841, Lingfield, 1851, Lingfield, 1861 Lingfield, 1871, Lingfield, Ag Lab.  found in 1881
Sarah Payne born 1841 in Lingfield, appears on 1851, Lingfield
Emma Payne born 1849 in Lingfield, appears on 1851, Lingfield and 1861, Lingfield found on 1871 and married Thomas Potter
John Payne born 1884 as above and I have details for him.

Parents were:
John Payne born 1807, Lingfield, died 1890  and Sarah Kesterton 1810 to 1877, Lingfield.

okay i think thats what we have done so far but please remember this is Kerrys hunt not mine!
Just thought I would bring Toni's summary forward again with some more additions.  I may have missed some.  ::)

Hi toni

Unless my maths are really bad  ::) ::) ;) ;) I don't think either of those fit him.  Mind you the George Payne age 75 might fit in somewhere else so I shall keep him.  My Paynes go back to the early 1700s in East Grinstead so far.

If you get really desperate, Kerry, I have lots of 17th century Paynes from the middle of Salisbury Plain  ::)

Seriously - it's a very 'common name' I was lucky because they all had seriously rare Old Testament names.

Hi Gadget

A lot of mine were called William or John (I have a row of 5 Johns down the generations) but later on there is a pattern in the names Maurice, Spencer, Clara and Florence which crop up a lot.  Incidentally thicky question now, I know Payne is a common name was is its origin?

All done on these two thanks Toni, back two more generations with the Paynes to East Grinstead, the Kestertons, though a rare name are a little bit more diffiicult, I am at work this morning so can't remember exactly but I've got Sarah's parents, father died fairly young, mother lived next door.  I think we have their parents too but unfortunately they came from Edenbridge, Kent which is more difficult to get records on and I cannot bear the thought of a trip to the record offices in Maidstone, have you ever been to Maidstone??  Don't.

is East grinstead in surrey or Sussex?

deb

Hi Deb

When I first started this game, I got totally confused with East Grinstead, and searched and searched and searched for records in Surrey.  Its in Sussex.  ::) ::)  Once I realised that I got back another 2 generations.

As Gadget says Payne is a common name, seriously common.  However there seems to be at least 3 families that appear in East Grinstead around the time of the 1500s.  They are proving difficult to sort out but there are clues to them.  One family lived in a large Iron Masters house in the centre of town and were Mayor and important people (of course not my family!) another were iron workers down in a district called Legsheath, ironworks now under a reservoir, these lot I think due to clues in will etc are mine.  I am just awaiting a letter from West Sussex County Archivist to see if we can pin down a mid 1700s birth for my William, grandfather to John born 1807.  I found stacks of entries on the Nat archives site and some great big fat clues!

I'll store these with those, as they could be useful.  My John born 1807 seems to move across the border into Lingfield where the family remained till my grandmothers time.  I have a feeling some of Johns siblings were there too but I have not done much research into them as yet.

I like this family, for once they are not Ag Labs but Iron Workers and Brickmakers.  Something different  ::)

Children and siblings might be useful and interesting.  I have a few surnames floating around in my head that are supposed to be cousins of my gran ie Russell, and wonder if they fit in somewhere.

Hi Toni

Joseph Spencer Payne doesn't ring any bells and I've not found any sign of him so far but I won't discard him because the use of the name Spencer makes me think he could well fit in somewhere.  His father George would have been born 1850.

Again not one I've come across before in my direct line but we are looking for an Esther Payne born 1817, Lingfield.  I am presuming that Esther Wood must have been Payne or am I totally confusing and tangled up with me nieces??  I'm going to . one.

They lived at Saxbys in Lingfield, I have other Paynes at Saxbys and they are next door to William Kesterton  ::)

Well too young to be children of Henry and Alice Steer, so presumably another Payne married a Steer.  I'll check FindMyPast around that time.

Did they all call their children Winnie, my gran had a sister called Winnie but she was a Terry of course.

Kerry are these births yours?

all Payne mmn. Steer

 Albert H D   Reigate.2a   397   Q3   1913

 Lily E  Reigate.2a   327   Q2   1918

 Winifred A      Reigate.2a   386   Q3   1913   (ooh Winifred / Winnie)

Well too young to be children of Henry and Alice Steer, so presumably another Payne married a Steer.  I'll check FindMyPast around that time.

Did they all call their children Winnie, my gran had a sister called Winnie but she was a Terry of course.

Kerry
Ok found a Alice C A Steer and Fred Payne married in Reigate September 1911.

Hi everyone
I found John Payne in 1881 Census born 1807 lingfield Surrey
School House East Grimstead
John Payne aged 74 b 1807 Widow ag Labour
lodgers John Ager aged 20
             Sarah Ager aged 25 Wife

sorry if repaeating someone else but wasn;t sure if you had that one
Now that I am up early and noone else is around I've finally got time to go through some more pages.

Hi Tiggi

Yes this is my John, my great great grandfather.  I don't think John and Sarah fit in anywhere and are just lodgers.  He eventually died in 1890 in the workhouse. Very sad.

i did a quick look on the CWGC site for your Paynes also but nothing jumping up and down in front of me
and also soliders who died in the great war just with pob lingfield and east grinstead but no Paynes there
Yep I think I tried this one before and couldn't see anything useful.  I guess they must have all survived.

Kerry it may of course mean she was just a dressmaker but if it was cover or lady of the night then it would explain why she wasnt married!
she seemed to earn enough money to be head of the household
mind you in her later years would she still be 'dressmaking' i suppose the younger man might like a more expereinced woman to show him the art of how to make dresses
sometimes though these dressmakers would have several illegitimate children - this was not the case of Sarah

so weigh up both sides and what do you think

added -
sometimes there were a lot of dressmakers living in the one household, the equivalent to the modern day brothel
again Sarah seemed to be practising dressmaking alone
did your family have lots of pretty dresses ?

Of course they may have married over the border in Kent, that's the trouble with the East Grinstead area, the three counties all meet there and make things impossible sometimes.

woohooooo everyone ...well done ..... great job .... yeeeee haaaaaaaa!!

deb  ;D

HI Deb  :)
i've not done the female Paynes born circa 1799-1800
Right here we go!

this is the generation of John born 1807 father to Elizabeth etc.

Benjamin Payne born 1798
Elizabeth Payne born 1801
Henry Payne born 1804
John Payne 1807 to 1890 - mine
Sarah Payne born 1809
Jane Payne 1811 - 1813

These are all children of Edward Payne born 1780 East Grinstead and Jane unknown, they were all baptised in East Grinstead and little Jane died and was buried in East Grinstead.

The Kestertons -
John Kesterton born 1771 Edenbridge, Kent died 1835 Lingfield, Surrey
married Ann Salis 1803 Lingfield she was born 1784 Edenbridge and died 1852 Lingfield
children:
Ann born 1802 Edenbridge
Thomas 1805 Edenbridge
Sarah 1810 Lingfield
Esther 1817 Lingfield and baptised in Lingfield
Eliza 1821 Lingfield and baptised in Lingfield
Rebecca 1824 Lingfield and baptised in Lingfield
William born 1826 Lingfield

Kerry

i.e. these ones
and not done anything with the Kestertons

Hi Sue

Toni and I are currently looking at William Kesterton.  There is also 1861 and 1871 to find for Sarah Payne born 1841

Kerry have you decided if the 1861 Lingfield William is yours or the 1861 Lambeth one?

I don't know why Toni I'm inclined to think it is the William and Sarah Ann one, I don't know why but the lodger on the 1871 William Jupp is ringing loud bells.

I've just had a look at the Surrey Marriage Index and found the following which could be Ann.

Ann Kesterton and William Hudson married 1826 Lingfield.

So the question is who were Moses's parents and was he one of my lot??

Could be possible if his sister Sarah married John.  Hmmm

Well you are a star Sue!  ;D

I just checked the 1871 again for Rebecca and Moses and guess what a daughter Susannah born 1862 which fits with the wife and mother of Alfred Smith snr and jnr.  Plus the fact that Rachel's address is the same as that of Rebecca a census earlier it must be Rebecca.

if you know the approximate year in which you male ancestor was born but cannot locate his bapt or marriage, search such indexes for teh wedding entries of females of the same surname and generation as these can often lead you back to where he came from too as brides tended to marry in their own parish.
you can then begin to hunt for his baptisim
if you havent been lucky enough to trace a marriage then tackle his parish of residence first, if you know this. you will need to covera wide perios if you do not have an approximate eyar of birth (men can father children right up to detah so this is a false indicator) ifhe died after 1812 the burial register will invariably record his age (be the age right or wrong! )

Parish record burials would be the best bet, if you can get hold of them.

Whats the NBI like for that area?

While clearing out my attic I came across a copy of a will  dated May 1st 1760 of Catherine Payne of East Grinstead.  She mentions her sister Philadelphia Payne who marries Sir John Dixon Dyke and also her sister Judith.
I do not know this family but I would love to know more about them.  Can anyone help?

Re: KerryB's Second Chance Scavenger Hunt.  Everyone Welcome To Join In.

I have been told years ago that there may well be Romani within my tree. The information I have is limited simply because I'm adopted. So to Romani, Sarsan? Which means how are you.

This is all I have starting with myself. Birth name Brownlee. Mother's name: Pamela Theodora Pearce... Born: B. 9.12.1918 The Grange, Hythe in Kent. D. 31.3.1985 D Essex. Father unknown. MyHeritage DNA kit puts me primarily in France and about a third in Eastern Europe.

Grand Father: Sydney Martin Pearce. B. 5.12.1890 Glebe Lodge, Heaton Moor, Stockport in Lancashire.D. 9.12.1918 Buried Winchelsea, East Sussex. = Annie Dorothy Wheeler. B. 7.4.1896. D.       1955. London. Her second marriage was to Frank Malcolm Brownlee.

Great Grand parents. Dates not known. Edwin James Pearce = Laura Theodora Payne. Both buried in Winchelsea.

Other Great Grand parents: Alfred Wheeler = Alice Fanny Louise Self. No dates. 2nd marriage? Ann Spurrel? Not sure of the spelling.

Are you able to shed any light to these names.
Sastimos as in thank you and to your good health. My vocabulary in this language is limited.
