Hi Evaann

Welcome to Rootschat!  I know what you mean about Armagh Ancestry - I too have spent a small fortune on trying to find my Hughes in Armagh.  I have a Sarah Hughes - (born c. 1860) she was my Great Grandmother, also from Armagh - not sure what parish but possibly Markethill or Richill.  Hughes is such a common name in this county, but you have a head start knowing the names of all those siblings.  If she was born in c. 1896 you should be able to get the civil registration from the GRO - they will do a search for you (within five years I think)  if you can't get to them in Dublin.

Also, if you can wait a little while, the 1911 census for Armagh will be online (sometime this year) and will be fully searchable and free.

Good luck

Jaylay

HI LOVE YEAH I WENT IN TO THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES I FOUND A SARAH JOSEPHINE HUGHES ON THE 1911 CENSUS AND SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE LISTED HER MOTHER JUST HAD HER NAME AS JOSEPHINE AND I HAD A RECORD FROM THE ARMAGH ANCESTRY AS A SARAH JOSEPHINE. IT SEEMS PARENTS  CALLED THEIR CHILDREN BY THERE MIDDLE NAMES WHICH FOR US IS HARD TO TRACE ! AND THE CHURCH IN KEADY SENT ME A FAMILY LISTING HOWEVER THE DIDNT HAVE A THERESA LISTED WITH THE FAMILY AND THE BOYS NAMES WERE DIFFERENT. IT WERE CONFUSING YOU SEE SARAH WAS CATHOLIC BUT SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH A PROTESTANT BOY AND THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN TOGETHER (THEY COULDNT GET MARRIED BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERNT RELIGIONS) HOWEVER SADLY JAMES SMYTH HER PARTNER WENT OFF TO WAR AND DIED SO SHE REMARRIED IN 1918 TO A JAMES SHERIDAN BUT THE MARRIED IN TYNAN ARMAGH HER WAS CATHOLIC. ANY WAY SARAH DIED IN 1931 LEAVING 6 CHILDREN AND THE GIRLS WERE ALL PUT IN AN ORPHANGE AND THE BOYS SENT TO ENGLAND AND THE FAMILY NEVER FOUND OUT ANYTHING ABOUT SARAH.

Hi Evaann

What a sad story.  Not sure what exactly you are trying to find out though - are you trying to trace some of Sarah's children?  If you could be a little more specific I'm sure one of us here could try to point you in the right direction at least!  :)

Sounds as though the 1901 census might be more useful with a better chance of Sarah's siblings still at home.
Do you know the names of Sarah's parents?
Also, where did you get the information about Sarah's siblings? perhaps the church records are correct and someone was confused about all the names.

yeah i have to go back into the national archives and search for the 1901 census. however i went into the national library and they were very rude to me and not helpful so i left with nothing and was very annoyed. i have no idea what sarah parents names were only what i found on the census form if its the right family her father was james hughes and mother rose ann mcgeough however on her marriage cert her fathers name is joseph?? so you can see how i am confused.

Hi Evaann,
I have access to Hughes Derrynoose/Keady baptismal records. I have Hughes ancestors from Drumnahavil Derrynoose which i think is close to Crossnenagh. In the records i have found Sarah Hughes and other siblings. Hope it does not cause further confusion:-

25.08.1885 Elizabeth born to Jas Hughes & Rose Ann Mc Geough
         Sponsors/Godparents Bernard & Mary Murphy.
06.09.1887 Mary Ellen
         Godparents John & Alice Hughes
24.07.1889 Jn Jas
Godparents Pat Hughes & Teresa Mc Geough
28.12.1891 Pat
Godparents  Michael Hughes & Susan Bennet
? 1894 Sarah(Records show date as 11.11.1111 ? misprint ?code) but written among other births for 1894. Only Roseanne Mc Geough recorded as parent. Father not mentioned. In Notes Mary Anne Mc Gurgan recorded.
?1898 Francis
Again baptismal date shown as 11.11.1111 but recorded alonside 1898 births.
Rose A Mc Geough recorded as parent. Father or godparents not mentioned. Alice Hughes recorded in notes alongside.
28.01.1904 Alice
Both parents recorded plus John & Alice Hughes Godparents.

Hope this is helpful.
Any information on Bernard Hughes from Kilkreevey who married Mary Renihan from Drumnahavil Derrynoose (Father Charles Renihan) in Sept 1872 would be most welcome.

Good luck with your search.
Noreen

Hi Steve,
I re-checked the records. Found Terence Joseph and his D.O.B is 7.7.1883 (not 1893) His godparents were Henry Hughes & Alice Hughes.

Pat born 1891 (his second name was Vincent)

Sarah born ?1894 Also show her 2nd name Josephine.

?1898 Francis (2nd name Joseph)

Alice born 1904 (2nd name Teresa)

Looking further back i could not find James birth but found the following children born to Terence Hughes and Rose Mc Crarin:

Mary born 28.11.1860 - Godparents Pat Hughes & Bridget Mc Crarin

Ellen born 07.12.1862 - Godparents James & Cath Hughes

Sarah Ann 10.09.1865 - Godparents Pat & Bridget Conly

Alice born   18.10.1868 - Godparents Rosy & Frank Hughes

Cath Mary  08.09.1871 - Godparents James Carriger & Bridget Mone.

Regards. Noreen

Noreen what is it with the Hughes clan the first names just keep repeating themselves at first this seems a clue and then every other family is using them, you seem to have a great source of knowledge, something else you may be able to help with, the godparents of Terence Joseph are Henry and Alice Hughes, the witness on James marrige cert is henry hughes, I'm wondering if they were brothers and if info on henry would lead to James, do you have anything on Henry
many thanks
Steve

Noreen the children to Terence and Rose seem a bit late compared to the age on the 1901 census of James of 56
this puts his birth around 1845 and on the 1911 it's 69 years of age

Hi Steve,
You did not mention you had an approximate age for James. You just said  "I'm trying to trace James birth and his Parents details his father is Listed as Terence" The Terence  i told you about was the only Terence i could find at first. However there is a gap in the records (that i have, other resources may be better) There are no enteries between 1836 & 1846. I`ve  now found -

03.12.1846 Patrick Hughes born to Terence Hughes & Eliza Murry Godparents John Tusk & Alice Tusk

29.03.1849Catherine Hughes           " " " "      " " "     & " " " " " "  Godparents Michael Hughes & Rose Hughes.

I have no idea if these people are your relatives but its something else to work on. You could try checking out the 10 year gap using these parents.

Regards Noreen
