Hi,
I am finding that in the chat room there are a growing number of members who have nothing in there profiles to indicat what country they live in, and when asked some of them just dont answer. I know people are very afraid of letting private information out, but come on to let someone know what country you live in is just polite and certainly wouldnt compromise your privacy. In fact part of the intrique of this chat room is talking to people all over the world with a common enjoyment of genealogy and helping one another. Knowing what country you are from can and does help others appreciate some of the problems in getting genealogy information that you have and can help or maybe if you have similar problems share in their solutions.
This is just a comment, but I feel my feelings are more common with the group than it may appear.

Hi Jane
Not exactly on the same topic, but saw your letter last week published in Leatherhead Advertiser re: your Bravery researches in Westcott. I thought I recognised the name but your address had been withheld on publication.
As it was on genealogy I thought I it was probably in my mind from RootsChat. Since starting this research and reading a lot of stuff connected with genealogy it trains you to remember things like unusual names etc. I'm now in Surrey, but originally from Kent.

Hi all,
I live in Berkshire, was born in Chiswick, brought up near Heathrow, went to university on Scotland. No roots in Berkshire that I know of - my ancestors come from all over the place. ;D
And having read the thread about redheads, it would seem that my family must have Celtic blood somewhere!
And, by the way , it's nice chatting to you, one and all!

-
Jan,
Lucky you.......
I Love Shrewsbury......almost as much as Brum!
Indi ;D
-
Jan,
Small World - I'm in Wellington at the moment. I split my time between Shropshire and my house on the shores of Loch Conn in Co. Mayo.
Have made a steady migration north and west, born Hastings, Sussex then moved to Colchester, Essex (and yes I married an Essex Girl and know every one of the jokes) next came Shropshire and the final move will be permanently to Mayo in October this year.
Paul
-
Indi, I see from your post that you try to come back to Brum every two years. You will have to let me know when you're due here again, and as you love Shrewsbury that would be the perfect excuse for us to meet up here!!!!! :D
Paul B, you're just down the road from me - but not for much longer!!!! Your house on the shores of Loch Conn just sounds idyllic ;)

Hi Honeybun,
Yes, that was me. It's funny what goes around comes around. I was originally contaced by another Rootschat member telling me about the article about Westcott Mill as he had remembered an earlier posting of mine. Well, to cut a long story short, he sent me the article and after reading it, I felt compelled to write back making a few corrections. They have since informed me that they published my letter in the newspaper...the rest is history as they say ;)
Thanks to Rootschat!

Couldn't work out at first that ALL the messages came in with a GMT time - had thought that it was just a British website. But obviously the time that they're put on the site is standardised, never mind where in the world they originate from.
I'm in Cambridge, Cambs, but always feel I need to put Cambridge, England when posting on any of the other (much inferior!) genealogy websites in case there are any Massachusetts people out there too.
Needed the atlas to check how to spell Massa., etc...

Hello from Ipswich Australia, I was born in Hampton England and moved down under in 1988, wish I had thought about doing family history before I moved as there are many places in England I would love to visit to help me with my research.

Born and raised in Blyth Northumberland and now live in Whitnash Warwickshire. Arrived here via, Melbourne, Wagga Wagga, Williamtown all Oz. Butterworth Malaysia. Richmond, Darwin, Sydney all Oz. Kingston upon Thames, Edmonton, Chiswick, East Acton, Ruislip all London.
Hope nobody starts looking for me on the census!
Pete
-
Hi Pete,
I live not too far from Wagga Wagga, just down the road, in fact, at Cootamundra :D :D Did you go to the Forest Hill Air Force base? I ask because the towns you've mentioned have air force bases and my late brother in law was in the force at Butterworth.
Regards Juddee
-
G'Day Juddee that was far to quick! :D I thought someone from Oz would see the connection and thought about asking the question on my post. Never expected such a swift response. Yes, I was in the RAAF and did my initial training at Wagga as an apprentice in 76-77. After travelling round the various bases mentioned I left the RAAF in 85 and returned to the UK. Melbourne is the odd one out as that is where I went to school for a year (Mooroolbark). I still have some friends in Wagga who I correspond with and whilst I know cootamundra I can not remember it very well, sorry. However I remember the Riverina very fondly. I was in Malaysia between 79-81. Do you know anyone in the RAAF now.
Cheers Pete
-
Born in Brisbane, Australia, raised in Northern New South Wales (Maclean) and have been in Canberra, Australia's National Capital since 1960.
-
Hello Pete
Pleased to see that I was right!! ;D ;D No, I don't know anyone in the Force now Pete, the only people I met years ago were Nick's neighbours when he lived on base and they were usually the people he worked with in Admin. He was in charge of Admin at Richmond, Elizabeth SA, Butterworth and also set up the office network in Vietnam when the war started over there. Sadly he's not with us anymore dying from injuries in a car crash in the early 90's.
Coota's only claim to fame is that it is Don Bradman's birthplace, other than that it's a quiet Oz town which is becoming known as a retiree's haven. I've lived here since 1983 - prior to that lived in Orange then went to PNG for 3 years before moving here.
How long is it since you were last in Wagga? You would certainly notice the difference if it has been a while. Lovely city with changes happening all the time but I'm sure your friends would have told you that. I travel over every six weeks or so and there is always new things to see. Very go ahead place.
Were you in Oz with your parents Pete? Don't mind me - just being a sticky beak!!
Great to meet someone from my part of the world 8) 8)

It seems like most of you folks who already put your country info in your profiles have been kind enough to tell us where you live, thanks.
I am still interested why folks who dont fill in their profile country location leave it empty.
Oh well its their business I guess.
Thanks again to all of you who replied to this post.

Hi Ted,
I did not have my whereabouts in my profile, due to internet stalker worries. But as I have often let slip where I am, and of course have now met some RootsChatters in the flesh, you are not all so scary anymore. :P
And your post made me think, so I added my whereabouts after answering this thread the first time. Maybe some of the others did the same.
Kazza.

Sylvia,
definately no moss on me, ;) though, having been static for a few years now, think I may be beginning to take root. ;D

France, for the last 40 years. Most of the time in Paris. Now in the country. I work here on my farm, on the edge of the Alps, as a writer.
I might be able to provide help to researchers with French queries.
I'm not particularly worried about revealing my address because I live in a wild place surrounded by gigantic cliffs and terrifying ravines. Stalkers coming here would risk their lives. They would have to dodge dogs, possibly buckshot from certain locals... but would most likely simply fall into holes in the gruyère ground before going far. A special kind of wilderness! (Google with "Vercors" to see what I mean.)
