Hi!
I'm trying to find information about my g-g grandfather's family in Lanarkshire. He was Walter Cleghorn, born Hamilton 1863, died in Larkhall 1934.
I'm stuck on info on the births/deaths of his siblings and more importantly info on his parents and grandparents. I believe they were John Cleghorn (born in Biggar, son of John and Janet Cleghorn???) and Margaret Gray (born in Cambusnethan).
Can anyone help?????

Hello Nancy
According to the IGI www.familysearch.org Walter Cleghorn was born on 18 Sep 1863 in hamilton Lanark
Born to John Cleghorn and Margaret Gray - 1840 to 1880 search - from IGI
John Cleghorn b. 02 Jul 1856 Stevenson Ayr
Robert Cleghorn b. 13 Oct 1857, Abbey (Paisley) Renfrew
Robert Cleghorn b. 16 jan 1859, Abbey (Paisley) Renfrew ? 1st R died?
James Cleghorn b. 05 Dec 1860, Hamilton Lanark
Walter Cleghorn b. 18 Sep 1863, Hamilton Lanark
Hopefully someone with access to census records will be able to clarify if they are all of same family.
Shall send you a short pm about researching in Scotland.
Good luck. Regards, Steve
Update: 14.37 - after Ruskies post which seems to confirm this family - back to the IGI searched 1850 to 60 only 5 Janet Cleghorns - none her. Maybe she is on Scotlands people though?) - or like a large % not registered - if her birth was 1854).

Hi Nancy,
The following is from Ancestry, so is transcribed, with no access to original images:
1871 census Scotland
4 Wellington Rd Dalziel
Jno Cleghorn 50 coat miner b Biggar
Margaret 41 b Cam'Nethan lanarkshire
Janet 16 daur b Cam'Nethan
Jno son 14 pit driver b Stevenston Ayrshire
Robert sone 12 pit worker b Nitshill Renfrewshire
Walter son 7 b Hamilton Lanarkshire
I'm in Australia and know of some Cleghorn descendants, though I've not traced their ancestry yet .... fairly unusual name ....
Are you aware of the Scotlands's people website?

Hi
Yes - I've got access to Scotland's People but that is where I get stuck - I often seem to have trouble finding births or marriages pre-1855 i.e. in the old parish records. Could it be that not all are recorded?
I thought they would be....

Not sure about the OPR coverage on SP but I doubt that every OPR would be on there - have you checked on the site to see what they say?
Have you checked the IGI? There are Cleghorn's on there which you may be able to sort into family groups.
Someone knowledgable about SP may be able to help further. I'm out for much of the day, but if you don't receive any expert advice today, I'll try to lend a hand later.

Hi All,
Sorry to jump on this fairly old thread, but I've only just discovered RootsChat.
My great-grandfather was James Cleghorn Robb b. abt 1887 possibly in Bothwell in Scotland.
His parents were James Robb & Ellen (aka Nellie) Wilson.
James' (Senior) parents were Andrew Robb & Margaret Cleghorn, so it seems James (Junior) got his middle name from his grandmother's maiden name.
Andrew & Margaret were married on 3 Aug 1845 in Bothwell. I guess Margaret could have been the brother of the Jno Cleghorn mentioned in the 1871 census information that Ruskie has previously posted.
Does anyone have anything that may confirm this?
Best Regards,
Andy
