Title: Lamb Family 1841 census lookup please
Post by: Lizw on Thursday 20 March 08 04:27 GMT (UK)
Hi
I'm writing up my family research & realize I have quite a big gap around one of the main lines the Lamb  Family originally from Croydon but they seem to have moved to London by the late 1700s.
There were quite a few children to John Lamb & his wife Elizabeth Shorey. They both died before the 1841 census but I hope their children were still alive & kicking then. I would be very grateful for any glimpses into what they were doing.
1. Eliza the eldest was born 18 Dec 1786 and ch. St Antholin, Budge Row, London She died 21 Aug 1786 in Camberwell.
2. Jane Elizabeth b. 28 Aug 1788 & ch St Antholin, Budge Row she married William Reeves & I already have their 1841 census (she died in 1849).
3. John was b 18 Apr 1790 Ch St Antholin Budge Row
4. Ann was b 21 Nov 1791 Ch 22 Dec 1791 St Antholin Budge Row, she died in Nov 1881 in the Greenwich District.
5. William Bailey Lamb b: 25 Jan 1794 ch: 25 Feb 1794 St Antholin Budge Row.
6.Lucy - only listed in an old family tree I have never been able to find her.
7.Richard b: 17 Jul 1796 ch: 17 Aug 1796 St Katherine Colman London
8.George Lamb ch 17 Dec 1800 St Katherine Colman London - I think he might have died in infancy
9.Sophia: b: 5 Dec 1802 ch: 6 Jan 1803 St Katherine Colman died 31 Nov 1854 10 Grafton St Clapham - I already have her in the 1851 census living with her Reeves nieces.
11. Ellen  b: 8 Feb 1805 died 19 Aug 1901 apparently m a Henry Cavendish who was b 1797 d 26 March 1877 - but my details about Ellen except for her death in the BMDs are from some old handwritten family  notes.

Well I know this is a lot but I would be VERY GRATEFUL for ANY help with the above. I'd love to know what any of them were up to in 1841 or beyond .
Thank you so much.
Liz

Liz....

Only Ellen Cavendish that shows born 1805 up + or - 10 years for 1841 is born in Ireland.

One interesting thing in light of the 1881 Census though....there are 4 Cavendish entries for that age range that are listed as Hon.  Given name Cavendish!

Then in 1861 I think this might be her....though her age is out by ten years.......

Dee you're being a GREAT help thank you. Ellen should be under Ellen Lamb though it was Jane Elizabeth who married a William Reeves. Sorry I probably wasn't clear in my notes all those 11 children were Lambs.
Apologies for any confusion - or am I not getting something here??
many thanks again Dee

I thought I was going cross-eyed for a few moments!   ;)

1841 is so difficult because it doesn't give places of birth....and they could all well be married.  :-\

Great!! That does look like 2 of the girls.
Thank you! We're on the right track now!

I should also  mention Sophia described herself as a Governess in the 1851 census when she was living with her nieces. So she might have been with a completely different family in 41.

There's no other Lambs that come up for 1841 that I feel happy to post, Liz.

I will just add this one however.....

Leadenhall St

Sophia Lamb 30  FS
May Pearman 20  FS
Betsey Fuller 15 FS

Bella Camfield 30 FS

I keep seeing Lambs with the correct given names but born in Ireland!

Maybe someone else can help out.  :-\

Dee, You have been amazing thank you again for all your help.
I'm showing by ignorance here but can someone tell me what "FS" in the last census result stands for??

I wonder what the boys were up to in 1841?? I can't seem to find them anywhere  other than the initial Parish records for their christenings except for William Bailey Lamb.

Many thanks
Liz

F S = Female Servant, Liz.

Too many Johns, Williams and even Richards, and none that stand out as possibly being the ones you are looking for.

I can find Ellens and Sophias born Ireland in Camberwell, but none that were born in England that seem likely.  :-\

Forgot I had found William Bailey Lamb had emigrated to Australia in 1853. He was already married to a Mary Ann at that time and they had a son Corbyn in 1832 so they should be all together in the 1841 census (?) I hope :-\

Eureka! I just found your posts and am ecstatic to find some background on my 3rd G G grandfather on my mother's father's side.
I can give you some details about his life in Australia.
William Bailey Lamb and Mary Ann came out to Australia in 1829 on the Marquis of Anglesea with three children and two servants. They were among the first 500 settlers in Swan River (now Fremantle) Western Australia. Corbin was born here. Mary Ann committed suicide in 1844 and the family moved to South Australia. I have lots more information but I need to find an easy way to transfer it from my Legacy files.
I have been searching high and low for some mention of William or Mary Ann's background.
In their marriage records she is listed as Cosbin - but that is a mistake. Sometimes she is referred to in Australian records as Margaret.
I understand one of her relatives got a medal for bravery in the 1700s for saving someone from drowning in the Thames - I am looking for more details on that too.
Anyway, I will leave it at that for now - your posts are quite old. Hopefully I can help you pick up some of the threads again.
Best wishes
Carmel in South Australia

I have just come across this thread, and it appears to connect with some research I have been doing on a family in the Flinders Ranges (my area of historical research). Their great grandmother was a Nellie Lamb Conway, and the name Lamb has been a bit of a puzzle. I have found that Nellie was the daughter of John Nixon Conway and Beatrice Tortoise. John Nixon Conway was the son of William Thomas Conway and Cora Matilda Lamb.

Cora Matilda Lamb was the daughter of William Bailey Lamb and Mary Ann. She is listed as their child on the passenger list of the Marquis of Anglesea. She married William Thomas Conway in 1846 at Fremantle; their son John Nixon Conway was born in 1847, and William Thomas Conway died that same year. She remarried in 1854 to Edward Newman. She is listed as the wife of Edward Newman in the 1867 advertisement re the estate of Elizabeth Matilda Corbin of Clapham, Surrey (although I think Cora had died by then?).

My sources have been the SA BDM CDs, the SA Biographical Index, the WA Online BDMs and backup material from the NLA's Trove online newspaper site.

There's a large amount of Trove newspaper material on the various parts of this family, which you have probably come across - Corbin Lamb in SA, Edmund Lamb in Sydney, William Lamb in Fremantle, John Nixon Conway in Port Augusta SA. And of course Edward Newman. There was also Cora Lamb, daughter of Corbin, who featured in a number of quite informative newspaper articles in South Australia over the years.

How does this fit in with your collective knowledge of William Bailey Lamb's family and descendants? I can provide my source information where needed.

Frank

Hello Frank
Thank you for your information about the Lambs. You seem to have a thread for the Corbin side which is a blank for me prior to Mary Ann's marriage to William. I have been corresponding with Liz so it would be good to collate the information we each have.

Thank you for this information -  these are my relatives

cheers K. Farrington (nee Conway) - Adelaide SA

My father is Christopher Maitland Conway,  my grandfather is Norman Maitland Conway,  my great grandfather is Lionel Nixon Conway, my great great grandfather is John Nixon Conway and my great great great grandfather is William Thomas Conway.   From the information here my great great great great grandfather is William Bailey Lamb.

Does anyone have any information on where William Thomas Conway came from.   I can see he married Cora Matilda Lamb in 1846 and then died in the same year their son John Nixon Conway was born.

Hello lovely to hear from a distant relative. I don't know where William Conway came from the only information I found out about him was that he was a first mate. I found the following article through the Trove web site, you may already have this of course.
THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL - SATURDAY, DECEMBER l8, 1847.
During the time the Champion was lying at the Sound, a melancholy accident happened, by which the lives of the mate, Mr Conway Baine and Kaine, two seamen, and a native lost their lives on the 2nd  inst. It appears that during the absence of the party who went to Cape Riche, and who were accompanied by Lieut. Helpman, a native prisoner, suffering from disease, was sent on board by the Resident, for the purpose of trying the effect of change of air; his moaning however proved such a constant annoyance to the crew, that it was determined to take him on shore again; for this purpose Mr. Conway and the two men started from the vessel with him, but had not proceeded far before a sudden squall came on, and the sheet being it is supposed, fastened, the boat was swamped, drowning all on board, who were with one exception, good  swimmers, yet were not seen to  struggle, excepting Kaine who was   shortly after picked up insensible, but all the efforts of Mr Wight for his restoration proved unavailing. The other bodies were not found for some days, when Lieut. Helpman fired a gun over the spot and from the concussion, the bodies rose to the surface about two hours afterwards. Mr Conway was much respected and had been mate of the vessel for five years; he has left a widow and one child, for whose benefit a subscription was generously and promptly raised by the residents at the Sound, amounting to £56; a subcription paper is also being handed about Perth and Fremantle, which we hope to find will meet with good success from the charitable feeling of our settlers.

There is a longer version of this article on the Trove web site if you are interested.

I hope this helps

Liz

Yes great to hear from a distant relative -

Thank you for that information,  I didn't have that article.

I have had a read,  sad news.

I actually did find that William and Cora's son is recorded on birth records as William John Nixon Conway born 1847.   Appears he was known as John Nixon Conway who made his way to Port Augusta and married Beatrice Tortoise (daughter of John Sutton Tortoise and Emma Stanton Tortoise (nee Mallet).   I saw that when something happened in John Nixon Conway's family, birth etc ,  a note was made to copy to Western Australia Papers,  so his mother Cora Matilda Lamb obviously remained in Western Australia with her next husband Edward Newman and their children.

I have found that John Nixon Conway and Beatrice had seven daughters (1 x died at 3 years)  and three sons -  the sons were my great grandfather Lionel St. Barte Nixon Conway,  Norman Roy Corbin Conway,  and Maitland Tortoise Crofton Conway.

I always wondered where my father's middle name Maitland came from?

Saw that Crofton's army record reveals his first name as Maitland.

Regards,

Karen

Hi again Karen

I'll send you a personal message with my email if you like so we can exchange information. Now I don't have certificates for most of these but found the information from WA online BMDs, trove, etc. I hope it helps. I hadn't looked at this side in a while but I revisited it yesterday. I'm not sure

Yes John Nixon Conway still had relatives (half siblings, stepfather, etc)  in Western Australia  but his Mother died in 1861, so it probably wasn't for her sake they copied newpaper notices.
Cora Matilda Lamb m Edward Newman in 1854 then had 4 children; Edward in 1855 Mary 6 Sep 1856, Matilda in 1858 and Cora Mina in 1860
Cora died in 1861 and Edward Newman remarried 13 Oct 1863 to Ellen Wood (Ellen died 19 Jun 1887 aged 60).
Of the 4 children:
Edward m. Mary Ann Mason in 1881 he died 19 Jan 1937 in Fremantle
Mary m 14 F eb 1888 to Augustus Sandford Keats Roe (1852-1921) and they had 2 boys John Edward & Douglas
Matilda ? I'm not sure yet what happened to her
Cora Minna Newman m 18 Mar 1889 to Daniel Tootal and they had 3 children Edward, Mary & Matilda Broadhurst

Mary Roe's death was widely written about as she died after an accidental shooting on a launch. The gun her son had went off - there are several articles on Trove

William Bailey Lamb's wife Mary Ann's death was also written about as she shot herself by attaching some stay lace to a gun :( poor woman.

Hope this is of interest
Liz
