Title: St Claires convent, Holywell
Post by: silvery on Friday 14 March 08 13:31 GMT (UK)
Would anyone know where I could find the records for this convent, when it functioned as an orphanage/home for girls?  I have a relative there in 1901.

Silvery - I haven't a clue where the records might be - but my Nana's sister was there in 1901 too  :D   :D

I found her about 6 years ago - long before I joined Rootshat and discovered what else it as possible to find out !

So if you find anything - please think of me - and I will of course, of you!

I only recently found her in ancestry.  Been looking for a couple of years and ancestry must have updated their records or something.  I can find her marriage in 1913, and her death, and have traced her children/grandchildren, but can't quite get to today for a contact.  Funny thing is I have others there in the 1940s.

Forgot to say I will certainly let you know if I get anything.  The only thing I ever found to date is this

Is the convent still going, do you know?  I might write to them....

Another of my great aunts was a nun, and her convent were very helpful in deed.

I don't think the convent is there now, read something recently about new houses being built there.

Will try to remember where.

Wonder what order it was. (of nuns)

Birkenhead  - that's what it says on 1901 census, but in fact she (and the rest of the family) I believe lived in Wallasey.  That's where her father (my great grandad) 3 brothers and little sister my Nana) were in 1901, anyway, and that's where they were in 1891 and 1881 !  So why it says Birkenhead for Catherine in 1901 I don't know.

Mine was Birkenhead.  Brother (great grandfather) and sister were in the union school, Rock Ferry, Birkenhead in 1891 and he was in the army in 1901.  Looking at that NE Wales site again, there are a lot of people who would like to see the records of St Clares. Someone has written to the Poor Clares who have no records.  I wonder if Birkenhead has any archives relating to it.

My late Mother was sent to St Clare's Convent Orphanage School, Pantasaph from Birkenhead in 1926. I think she stayed there until the early 1930's. The Archives at Birkenhead state she was sent to St Clare's for 'domestic training'. As I was adopted, I know nothing else about Mum's time at St Clare's and I have read with interest, and written to BBC North Wales 'Ask a Local' - no-one seems to have any idea where the records of her time there are now. If, indeed any records were kept at all. I assume the only record kept was a School record.  If anyone does discover the whereabouts of these records, please let me know.

Many thanks

H

Hello,

I'm new to rootschat but may be able to offer a bit more info. I visited Pantasaph Friary (over the road from the convent) last month to visit my ancestor's graves. Two of my Great Aunts were sent to St Clare's and are shown there on the 1901 census. We got chatting to a couple that we met there and the lady was able to tell me that the convent was run by a Dutch order of nuns called "Our lady of charity." Although the convent has now been turned into housing there are apparently some Nun's left on the site. I intend to write to them and see if they can give me any info. Just thought you might like to know.  :)

Oh please do let us know if you find out anything.   I also recently learned from a friend of mine that her mum was there as well in about the 1920/30s.   There are a lot of people who would really appreciate more information.   But I believe the Catholics are quite protective (is that the right word?) of their information.

Catholic records are known to be hard to find, there is a standing joke that they are kept under lock & key or under the floorboards ;D ;D
Joking aside When anything Catholic closes I believe there is a Catholic (only) Archives like the one on this link
http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/crs/index.htm
But they do tend to always make a charge.

They do have some records for St Clare

Hi Silvery,

I believe the Franciscan Friary across the road from St Claire's have their own archives. It might be that they hold St Claire's also.

When i was at school in merseyside in the 1950's there were numerous children coming and
going from St Clares. Suggest that you contact Liverpool Echo as many of the girls where
from Merseyside and will still be alive. the echo runs a Where are you now column on  a

Have just been reading all the comments about St Clares Convent as I, too, want to know where to access the records of the convent.  Has anyone any uptodate information about the whereabouts of the records? I have just e-mailed the Catholic History website e-mail address but don't expect them to come up with anything as they state, in bold letters, that they don't help with family history research.  But one can try!

If you contact St. Wilfrid's R.C. Church in Preston Lancashire, I believe a history of St. Clare's Convent Pantasaph has been written by a group of nuns there.

St Joseph`s in Preston was a sister Convent to St Clare`s so will know a great deal about it. I was at St Clare`s in the 60`s and remember having a day trip to Preston. The nuns Order was The Sisters of Charity - Our Lady of Mercy. I can see the gold plaque now on the gatepost outside of the convent. I revisited about 6 months ago and believe the records may be kept in Hawarden Archives. There was fire damage which actually closed down the convent - it then stood empty for a few years before being bought by developers. The attached farm still stands as it was as if time has stood still.
Sister Catherine is still alive and living in the Nun`s section of the Monastery but will be really elderly now.
Many of the nuns who were there last will still be alive as will probably be 50/60 year old, maybe younger.
Hope this helps you in your research.

Many of the children aged over 11 -17yrs from St Clare`s Convent attended Blessed Richard Gwynn School in Flint (later renamed Saint Richd Gwyn). The school would surely have records as it is still used to day.
