Post by: smokeydownunder on Wednesday 12 March 08 07:21 GMT (UK)
Robert Stewart born 1800 + or - two years at Garth, Perth, as stated in the 1851 census Edinburgh Midlothian. Could some kind person please do a lookup for this man - nothing in the Fische other than lots of 'Robert' & no mention of Garth for Perth. TIA  ::)

Sorry, late at night for me when request sent.  :-[
Would like a Birth /Baptism/or Christening for the above gentleman. From the 1851 Edinburgh Census his sons were Robert, Henry, John & Mathew [my direct line], later a daughter called Margaret. As with most family history's the request to Perthshire is a big  ???.
Regards & TIA   :)

Hi Ev
My Robert married Isabella KEAY in 1824 Midlothian, I didnt find the rest of the family until I tried to find my Mathew Stewart in the 1841 Census & Births via Scot/People, if this is any help.
I get so frustrated because I am stuck here in Australia with limited & expensive resources & have to rely on great people like yourself & then I dont get all the info correctly for the other people. ::)

Hi I'm back!
I see them on the 1841 as well.... have you found the family in 1851?
Title: Re: Stewart of Garth, Perth Scotland Lookup
Post by: smokeydownunder on Thursday 13 March 08 23:58 GMT (UK)
In 1851 I have only [so far] found Robert, Isabella & Margaret BUT I did find a Mathew Stewart [right age group], scholar,  as a boarder at Bridge End, East Linton[where is East Linton].

As for this Isabella's last name I will assume at this stage that the census taker misheard & wrote ?McKenzie.

I note Margaret is around the same age as Matthew.

Do you know if 'Mathew' is an unusual first name for that time & place, as it has been carried forward to the present day? :)
Title: Re: Stewart of Garth, Perth Scotland Lookup
Post by: smokeydownunder on Friday 14 March 08 02:23 GMT (UK)
Hi Ev & Valr

Just did a search for East Linton re Mathew Stewart b.1839.
Its certainly odd for this young man to be so far from Midlothian at this age.

The Stewart/McKenzie link is certainly confusing. The Mathew Mitchell is my link to the present. I have his OPR record showing Robert & Isabella [Keay] Stewart as parents. No other info.

Robert Stewart has me stumped as does his father-in-law Hugh Keay. ::)

hi tia

stewart/mckenzie and stewart/keay are two seperate families ,
they are both on the 1841 census so i think we can safely say that
stewart/mckenzie is not your family
this also means that the robert , isabella , and margaret that we found on
the 1851 census are probably not your family if margaret age 12(1851) and
margaret age 3(1841) are the same person
the mathew stewart is a possible(but hard to prove)

http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm?shop_id=290&mapAction=gaz&gazName=pc&gazString=EH40+3AJ

i wonder if something happened to robert stewart(senior) and the family broke up ?
the three older sons could have went their own way

what is the family link to australia ?

Hi Ev
My father arrived here in 1939 with his Grandmother & Uncle [skeleton in the cupboard we found out when he - my dad - died]
Our family -Stewart - has been traced back to the 1860's in Wilton Dean [Hawick] BUT Mathew Mitchell was born in Midlothian to Robert & Isabella [Keay] Stewart.

Another curiosity is that Mathew was not born till 1839 but his parents were married in 1824, this makes me think that the family which includes the boys is the correct family WHICH in turn leaves me still looking for Robert. ::)

Is 'Mathew' an unusual forename?
Title: Re: Stewart of Garth, Perth Scotland Lookup
Post by: ev on Friday 14 March 08 09:23 GMT (UK)
hi tia

only 4 mathew stewarts(born 1839 +/- 2years) on 1841 census scotland
although it is sometimes spelt with 2 t's
only one in midlothian one t or two t's

 ;D
Totally confused now!
I think Matthew was relatively uncommon back then - certainly this is the firts time I've come across it in Scotland around that time and if you do a search relatively few come up (compared for example to Donald or Robert etc!)
I know its a pain.. but could you possible set out all the info you are entirely sure of with sources etc.. and we can try again? It's bugging me now and I'd like to get to the bottom of it!

Hi
Most of my 'Stewarts' seem to be Border people from the 1850's onwards. My Perth search was just another stab in the dark at trying to knock my brick wall down.
Will help if I can but a lady called 'Ev', [if we are still lucky enough to have her help] is much, much, much better than I am.

Flogged not Flagged,; anyhoo,
all from c1660 to 1900 were FREER, begining with George Freer, ordained minister at Lethendy, married Helen Blair 26 Dec 1699, my line is of 1st son Adam Freer 1704, but going the other way, Helen Blair's father was John Blair 8th of Ardblair, John Blair married Isabel Stewart daughter of James Stewart 1st of Ladywell.

Also given the name of Stewart of Garth,
James Stewart of Fincastle, I have little on dates and location, only names at present, confirmed by Stewart Society and Gordon Macgregor.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and just wondered if my ancestor Janet Hutton (nee: Stewart) from Perthshire is related at all to any of your ancestors mentioned in this forum.  I also see that ev you have the surname Hutton listed as one of your family names so wondered if linked to my Hutton's ancestors.

All I know is that Peter and Janet (nee: Stewart) Hutton had 3 children who emigrated to Otago, New Zealand from Perthshire, Scotland in 1860's.  James (born 1842), my great grand mother Mary (born 1845) and Peter Hutton. Peter Hutton (senior) was a government official in Scotland.

I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who might know more about these Huttons or whether my Janet Stewart is related to any of your Stewart ancestors on this forum.  Many thanks Rachel

Hi rachelnz, I personally have follow backward with a great deal of help from everyone in many sites, therefore one the one line only, I have not looked at branchouts, coming forward from Robert II King of Scotland with his son Alexandra there is very little information with marriages and children, but if you make contact with Gordon MacGregor who has put together the "Red book of Perthshire" he may be able to help, Stewart Society in Scotland can give some help but they also refor to Gordon for help.
He can be found with a simply net search.

Hi Rachelnz, I have found that with branchouts there is little information held so far as royal ties, only those that where of the main line had stuff kept on record, anything else was done by family if at all. I have had correspondence with Gordon and he is helpful to the best of his ability, he researched all the families of the areas. hence "The Redbook of Perthshire"
