My Great Grandfather Henry Ashford was born 10-15-1817 in Lancashire County England. However I do not know what city in Lancashire he was born. He married Emma Whaler, I dont know what year or where they were married. But I do know by 1846 they had moved to Wales where my grandfather Alfred Ashford was born in July, 1846.Henry & Emma also had two daughters Sarah, born 1849, and Mary Ann, born 1853. The family then came to America in the Fall of 1853 and settled in Wilkes-Barre Twp. Pa. If anyone recognizes these names and would have any information regarding the Ashford or Whaler Families,I would be happy to hear from you.
Thank You.
With Kindest Regards,
Margaret

Hello Blodwyn i have just been looking on the I.G.I to see if i could find the birth of your Henry Ashford in Lancashire.
Not one did i find. I did find a Henry ashford christened 21st March 1817 but in Yorkshire. Where did you get the Lancashire Birthdate from?Have you tried asking for the 1841/51 census for wales if you know which part.

Dear Celia,Thank you so much for your post. My Aunts, Malvina and Fannie always said their grandfather Henry was from Lancashire. Can you tell me what county Yorkshire is in? Is it in close proximity to Lancashire? I live in America, and therefore I'm not very familiar with U.K. geography.Perhaps Henry was born in Yorkshire, but his family then migrated to Lancashire? Can you tell me where I would be able to find the Wales census you mentioned in your post?
I Thank you again for your post. I appreciate the information very much.
With Kindest Regards,
Margaret

Hello Blodwyn i am sorry i couldn't have been more help to you. The County of Yorkshire is right next door to the County of Lancashire. As most of us have found, never rely on information given by relatives although they believe the information to be true at the time. unfortunately for us ;D It often turns out to be wrong, As you have two county's and one country involved here and i don't have access to information i am not sure where to direct you to. I think maybe the moderator will move you to Wales so you can ask for a lookup. Or someone will pop by with some advice. I will let you know if i find anything on Henry

Dear Celia, it is so kind of you to post the information.I was not aware of the Wales census so you have been a great help.I went through my records and found Henry's birth date as being Oct. 15th 1817. That is the date that is inscribed on his stone at the cemetery.
Thanks again for the information, I appreciate it very much.

Hello Margaret I found this birth I know it isn't the same Date so it probably isn't your's. But as you have the year i just entered the name and England all counties. Out of the whole of England only one came up. which is unusual. It is not a submitted one it has a source. So i thought you might like to hold it until it is disproved. You will notice there is no death date. Which is why i took it because if he emigrated there wont be one.

Blodwyn i have just been very cheeky ;D i popped over to the Welsh board to ask if anyone can come up to lancashire to give you a census. That will save moving and confusing you. Wait and see if anyone comes in. if not you will have to go to the welsh board, General. Tell them who you are looking for in wales and the years.

Hi Blodwyn/Margaret,
slightly off topic, but this thread might interest you:
EVER WONDERED WHERE THAT PLACE IS ? (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,27787.0.html)
The first link on that page is to a map of present day counties. Click on that link and you will find, not only the map, but also a link to the historical counties at
http://www.picturesofengland.com/mapofengland/historic-uk-counties.html
which will probably be even more interesting for you
Good luck

Dear Bob thank you so much for the link. It is exactly what I needed! As I have said, I live in America and am not familiar with the location of all the counties in the U.K. So this link will be a big help in my research.
Thanks Again,
Margaret

Hi blodwyn,
Just visiting from the Wales board, having read Celias posting.
I've just tried to look at the IGI, but the site is down at the moment.
Have you searched there for the births/baptisms of Alfred, Sarah and Mary Ann? The chances are you could strike lucky, as Ashford is not a typical Welsh name at all. Do you have any other infomation at all? Maybe from the FreeBMD site regarding the births of Alfred, Sarah and Mary Ann?
If the family emigrated to the US from Wales, this would narrow down the number of possible ships. Have you found their immigration details? As you know the date they arrived in the US, this might be a possibility worth investigating.
All the best

Hi Basically Blodwyn is looking for the where abouts :D of birth in October 1817 of her G.Grandfather Henry Ashford. I have searched Lancashire on the I.G.I ( on the net) Previously as seen above. It could be that Blodwyn has been missenformed, so we thought that by obtaining a census from Wales for the time they lived there. It might be more specific as to the place.

Hello Blodwyn. I have now Had a look at the original I.G.I. There is only one page of Ashford's for the whole of Lancashire. No birth at all for Any Henry Ashford. BUT, I did find something of interest, regardless to the date. My instinct tell's me that at some time or other this might fit into your jigsaw.
Henry Ashford. Son of. Henry Ashford & Jane, was Christend on the 25th March 1787 In Liverpool (Lancashire) St Nicholas
I know this isn't who you are looking for but you might have a Henry son of Henry who was also the son of A Henry ;D

Dear Celia, I think you may have found something! It is quite possible Henry's father may have also been named Henry, My family have always named their children in honor of their elder family members.Although my grandfather's name was Alfred, perhaps he is not Henry & Emma's only son as we had originally thought. I wouldn't be surprised to find they may have had an older son also named Henry. I will keep your post in my records. I do appreciate all your help.
With Kind Regards,
Margaret

I do thank you for your reply. I have tried the FREE BMD, but I'm not sure how to use it. I came up with several listings on all three names, and all were in different locations in Wales.
I do have the immigration for the Ashford family, they left Liverpool in the fall of 1854 aboard the ship Universe, headed for New York City. I also have the naturalization document showing they became American Citizens Oct 8 1868.
If you would be so kind as to tell me how to use the Free BMD, I would be very grateful. I do know my grandfather Alfred was born July,1846 or 47 and his parents names were Henry Ashford and mothers maiden name was Emma Whaler.Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
With Kind Regards,
Margaret
