The last message looks very good. It matches with the other census entries. :D
The 1877 marriage and 1881 censuses seem to be the same person ķe: George Smith/Cains. The surname varied over the years ::)
To confirm the link better, my Thomas Caines born 1890 worked on the railway at Basingstoke.
At that time the sons followed their fathers working in the same trade. ;)
Thank you for your help Barbara, you have helped me a lot. :D

Knowing that is great! I didn't realise you knew the surname varied :)
Barbara :D

To be honest, I didn“t know it varied in this case.;D
But it is NOT the first time that I have have found another name which fitted with what I was searching for. :D
When the enumerator wrote what he thought he heard and not what the person said..... (you want to hear my accent!!)

What, Smith for Caines, you must have a very broad accent!! ;D ;D ;D

Hi Muffin. Are you still looking for info on Thomas Caines? He was my Grandfather's brother.
-
Hi Andi B,
Welcome to RootsChat; I hope the Forum helps you as it has me over the past years. :D
Any further information referring to Thomas Caines would be welcome. :)
Thomas lived in Woking, Surrey and was a Railway Engine Greaser in 1911.
I know he died in 1929 at or near Basingstoke.

Hi Muffin,
You actually know more about Thomas than I do. None of my remaining family knew anything other than the fact that he worked on the railway & was probably killed in the course of his work. I have traced his family back to 1733, mainly just names really. Would this be any help to you or do you already have that info?

I do not have much about Thomas family other than he was my mother's sisters first husband and they had three children.
I can help you there if you wish.
N.B. You must have sent at least 3 postings before you can use the personal message service.
Look forward to your reply then I can send you any information if you wish.

Tom was one of 12 children. Charles, Fanny, Bessie, Emmie, George, Walter, Alice, Clarence(my Grandfather) & 3 others whose names I can't yet find. Ican give you birth & death dates if you wish. They were all born in Henstridge, Somerset. UK. In fact the family all lived in the same house in Henstridge for severalgenerations.
Tom's Parents were George & Louisa Caines.
George was married before he met Louisa but his first wife died after having a child, Henry.
George was one of 12 also. Fanny, Charles, Sarah, Betsey, William, Jane, Soloman Sarah, Henry, Mary Jane & Charles (again).
George's Parents were George & Ann Caines. I have only been able to trace 1 sibling for this George But I haven't yet used any websites such as Ancestry. All my research so far has been done in actual record offices, several years ago.
This George's Parents were James & Rachel Caines. I found a number of entries for this couple receiving money from the Poor fund, including money to buy a coffin when James died.
James' Parents wereJoseph & Grace Caines.
Joseph's Parents were James & Judith Caines. James was born around 1733.
I am about to begin more research soon using the internet. As I said, all of my research was done before these websites existed so it was quite hard work!
It was great to learn about Tom as my Dad knew of a rumour about him working & dying on the railway but I hadn't been able to verify it.
Let me know if you would like dates
