Seeking information on Daniel HASSAN who was born about 1832 in Ireland. Arrived in NY in 1850 and died in NY approximately 1863. Married Ann MCLEAN, had at least one son, William Joseph HASSAN my g-g-grandfather.
1. Would like to find any record of him in Ireland. Looking to establish specific birth place, parents, etc.
2. Would like to find any record of his death in NY. Looking for cemetery record specifically.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards and Thank you.

Civil registration of births, Catholic marriages and deaths in Ireland started 1864 (other marriages from 1845) so for dates of birth and parents' names you need to search for church records (if they still exist). To do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county).

Hi Matt,
You say you dont know where in Ireland Daniel Hassan was born, yet you post in the Derry/Londonderry board.
Having done a bit of searching in the nine counties of Ulster, I find that Hassan was a name completely confined to the County of Derry from the earliest record I found in 1811, up until 1870.
In a total of 213 marriages involving the name Hassan, only 42 were outside of County Derry(34 in Antrim,4 in Down,3in Tyrone and 1 in Armagh).
Anyhow only two marriages of a Male Hassan were before 1844, which I list below:
21st Feb 1827 George Hassan married Betty McClos at Dungiven Roman Catholic Church in the Parish of Dungiven Civil District Newtown Limavady County Londonderry .
18th Feb 1830 Thomas Hassan married Kitty McVea at Dungiven Roman Catholic Church in the Parish of Dungiven Civil District Newtown Limavady County Londonderry .

Thank you for your prompt replies.
Daniel HASSAN would have most probably been Catholic, as we have been Catholic through all subsequent generations. I really have no idea the actual townland, but I have done some other research and found that the preponderance of HASSANs come from Banagher in the county of Londonderry (Derry).
From: http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/index.htm
The list below shows the number of HASSAN households in each county in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64.
1. Antrim 1
2. Derry 91
3. Tyrone 3
4. Westmeath 1
Of those in Derry, nearly half of are in the civil parish of Bangher.
HASSAN households in each civil parish of Derry in 1858-9.
Parish Households
Banagher 43
Bovevagh 6
Clondermot 4
Cumber Lower 3
Cumber Upper 8
Desertmartin 1
Desertoghill 3
Dungiven 2
Errigal 3
Faughanvale 1
Killelagh 1
Learmount 6
Maghera 9
Templemore 1
OTTO thank you too and as to your reply. I do not know if there is a connection between George, Thomas, and my Daniel. I had known that Hassans were largely in Derry, but I cannot confirm with certainty Daniel's birthplace but I took the shot at Derry County. You have given me strong indication that the odds are against another place other than Derry.
Do you have any marriages of HASSANs before 1832 from your sources?
He immigrated to the US aboard the Berlin in July 1850, arriving in New York on the 10th of July 1850. He was 18 at the time and hence my determining that his birth was in 1832 and parents would be married around that same time if not earlier.
Thank you both for your replies!

Matt

Ages on early passenger lists aren't terribly reliable so wouldn't be too sure from just that record what age Daniel really was when he went to U.S. (if he was a bit younger and travelling by himself he might have conveniently aged a year or two).

Hi Matt,
Do you know what port Daniel left Ireland from? The usual places for County Derry people was either Port of Derry or Moville.
If hye left either of these two then you could be pretty certain that he was from Derry.
-
There a Danl Hassan age 18 arrived New York 10 July 1850 from Liverpool, England on "Berlin" which might be the correct person.
Many Northern Ireland/Derry people also left for America from Glasgow, Scotland and Belfast, Ireland as well as Liverpool, England.

ah now i see why its been difficult to trace him to a particular county!
Unfortunately its difficult to say if Daniel was from Derry, even though there a only a few families from other counties called Hassan there is still a possibility that he belonged to one of these families! ???

According to the first post Daniel Hassan left Ireland c1850 so would not have been in Ireland at the time of Griffith's Valuation.

I realised that, but first names often run in family lines, and these could give clues as to where the family continued.

Hi all ;)
Interesting thread, I too have just added 'Hassan' to my tree....Catherine Hassan born abt 1841 Coleraine, Londonerry, to John Hassan and Mary Bradley. I am looking for siblings of Catherine, she sailed to Victoria, Aus (I think in 1865) cannot determine alone or with family.... They were Catholic.
If these names are familiar to anyone, would like to hear from you.

Hassan is a very common surname in the area and 'Coleraine' could refer to the town or the area around Coleraine.
Unfortunately civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages in Ireland didn't start until 1864.

I am interested in the Hassen/Hassan name too. My G.grandmother Bridget Hassen was born in Londonderry about 1863-1865. Her parents were John Hassen, a farmer and Catherine Mullen. She came to New Zealand in about 1881 on the Forfashire. Family names maybe Ellen, Daniel,Patrick and Benedictine
I would appreciate a look up to find her exact birth place in Londonderry.

I, too, have been looking for Hassans from Derry. I am trying trace my great great grandmother's roots in Derry Ireland. According to her obituary she was related the John Cardinal McCloskey of NY. His mother was Elizabeth Hassan of Coolnamonan, Banagher Derry Ireland. I have researched records for both McCloskey and Hassan to no avail. Unfortunately, there are not many records in existence. I am now hoping to make a link with someone online that may have some family stories. If I could figure out who Elizabeth Hassan's siblings and/or parents were, I might be able to make the connection with McCloskeys. If you have any information that might be useful, please let me know.
Regarding your inquiry, I know that in the 1831 Irish Census there were 15 Hassans of 28 households in Coolnamonan. The names were Patrick, James, John, Manus, Patrick, Thomas, Thomas, Hugh, Michael, Widow, Peter, HEnry, Thomas, James, and John. Griffiths Valuation of 1858 shows 11 Hassans in Coolnamonan: James (Jonny), James (Tonry Due), John, Patrick, Thomas, Michael (Jack Roe), Nelus, Alick, John, Michael (Roe), and James (tailor).

Hi Mame,
Thanks for your reply,
I don't know anything about my.g.grandmother or her family. I am reasonably sure the name was spelt Hassen, although she could not write at the time of her marriage in NZ in 1884 as it states in the cert that she put her mark,so other people could have spelled it the way it sounded. Her father was a farmer.
Have you looked in the church resourses on this forum? Do you know what religion your G.G.grandmother was.It seems they were Roman Catholic or Presbyterian mainly. That may narrow things down. What dates are you looking at birth ect.. estimate if your not sure.
Have you looked on the Family Search website?I am sure you have??
Were there any census during the 1860's -1880's for Londonderry?
Bridget was born in 1863/64 and left Ireland in 1882/3
Bye for now

I agree. the spelling of names is tricky. There are several spellings that I have come across: Hassan, Hassen, Hasson. I have checked in all the available spots. The problem is that there are few records in existence. they were either destroyed in the Dublin fire or they were not kept properly by the priest in the village. You may be luckier than me. The records for Derry just became available on line. You have to register and pay to see them. Good luck on your search.

For county Londonderry 1831 census (heads of household only listed by name), 1901 and 1911.

Hello All:
Thank you so much for your help. I just returned from New York City. A search of the registry found Daniel HASSAN in the death index for 3 NOV 1863. It list his age as 34 which imply his birth in Ireland was more along the line of 1829 and not 1832. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery. He died of consumption. He had resided at the corner of 4th Avenue (present day Park Ave.) and 66th Street.
It list his occupation as bootmaker? Were there any Hassans in boot making trade or is there any listings of occupations before 1850?
Also what we be good way to start searching baptismal records in Ireland (again presumably in Londonderry (Derry) although I am here in the States? This is with the presumption of Daniel being Catholic, because we have been Catholic in all generations since.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
Matt Hassan

To find records in Ireland you need to know both the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland) and then see if any church records survive.
