Title: Bayne family missing from 1861 Census!!
Post by: Fife Lass on Monday 10 March 08 21:48 GMT (UK)
I found some details about  Robert Bayne (born - 04/05/1826) his wife Christina Patrick (born - 1828) and their 6 children on a web site (Ancestry.co.uk) that shows them staying at Breckmont Cotton in the Registration District of Leuchars, Fife at the time of the 1861 census.

I've accessed the Scotlandspeople site tonight to get a copy of the offical census for the family but have been unable to trace an entry under Robert or any other member of the family.

Has anyone ever come across this problem before?

Hi

I'm no expert on the Scotlandspeople website but could it be that their index has them spelt differently to that on Ancestry?

The 1901 English census is a good example of this type of difference as the Government website used different transcribers than Ancestry

You can therefore get a vast difference in interpretation of names

Is it possible to do a "selective" search on Scotlandspeople (eg) Robert birthyear 1828 birthplace Balmerino which would throw up an index and you will then be able to see if it is spelt differently

This is the Ancestry version

Robert Bayne 33   Balmerino
Christian  31  - should be Christina b Ceres
William  12 Balmerino
Agnes  9  b  Balmerino
Robert  9 Balmerino
George  7  Balmerino
John  5  Leuchars
Ann  2  Leuchars

You have to search by surnames.  There is a Soundex facility on Scotlandspeople, but I've tried that, and this still does not produce any results when you put in the various forenames, so must be misindexed.  I suggest emailing them (contact details at the bottom of any page), quoting the roll, ed, etc reference numbers and details found on ancestry

You could try a search of other people listed on the same page - these include:
Christian Kinnear    b.1809 Newton
William Leslie b.1833 Culte
Davis Terras  b.1819 Leuchars
These are Heads of Household - one other that ought to have been transcribed no problem is a lodger (one of many) David Ross b.1843 Leven.

Sorry - fingers not working properly - 'Davis' should be 'David'.

Thanks for your suggestions. I've sent an e-mail to Scotlandspeople to see what they say and if I get no sucess with them I will try Annette's suggestion of trying to trace using the other people on the page.
Will let you know outcome.
Thanks again.

Thanks Sancti
The suggested entry has turned out to be the right one. I'll contact the soctlandspeople site to see if they can update their index.
Thanks again to everyone for their advise and help.
